Davstar. quite a few teams in this cup prefer to select domestic players, look at the south african team.
we know our players aren't that poor, but i do blame Verbeek with his lack of urgency in solving the central defensive position 2 years ago! also his limitations in systems, sending fit players home in positions we are lacking in i.e macca etc Also Neil sending out the wrong vibes as captain, Verbeek's mentality has rubbed off on our players, but not in a good way. Bye pim!

Verbeek is a perennial number 2.
Look what he did with the South Korean team at the Asian Cup. It was dired. and they had some extremely talented players abroad.
Yes, we need to produce better players, but we also need a better coach , which i think is far mkore important. someone who can motivate and get the best out of his players, doesn't play mates, and a coach who is looking to the future. Look what Troussier did with Japan from the ground up....we need someone like him.

http://www.skysports.com/football/match_report/0,19764,11065_3222272,00.htmlThe british media seem to have vastly different ratings for our players. They had emerton as one of our worst players on the night! Makes you wonder how they actually get these ratings.

Cool_Cat2007 How the fuck would I know where Kewell was ya nutter? He could have been on the shitter for all I know. For what it is worth there ar rumours flying around of some deep dissent in the Socceroos camp prior to the game and it showed on the field. No one played for each other!!

Quote:Socceroos player ratings versus Germany Socceroos player ratings for World Cup Group D opener against Germany: MARK SCHWARZER: Seemed to misjudge flight for Germany’s second goal, though Germany’s brutal exposure of the back-four at every opportunity made his a tough night. Two good second half saves but not his best work. Rating: 5. LUKE WILKSHIRE: Worked hard trying to make things happen, though Podolski gave his side of the park a torrid time and he played Germany onside for their first goal. Rating: 6. CRAIG MOORE: Made some solid challenges and did the little work he needed to in air well. But Germany’s plan of playing short balls in front third and sending crosses in along ground found him wanting at times: Rating: 5. LUCAS NEILL: A nightmarish return to a tournament he dominated in 2006. Guilty of playing Germans on-side in dangerous situations way too often and struggled to deal with their excellent movement. Rating: 3. SCOTT CHIPPERFIELD: Shocker. His side was targeted time after time by the Germans, and that was a smart move on their part. Torn apart by Ozil and Muller and exposed for virtually entire match. Rating: 3. VINNIE GRELLA: His indifferent form continues. Ineffective, couldn’t really get the defensive line set in the right place, and sacrificed after 45 minutes for a more attacking option. Rating: 4. CARL VALERI: Surprise selection who looked comfortable when on the ball moving team forward. Not so comfortable when wave after wave of German pressure bore down on him like a Panzer division. Rating: 5. BRETT EMERTON: The only Socceroo who measured up to his best. Tried hard to get things going down right and did all he had to well. Sadly, it was not enough. Rating: 7. TIM CAHILL: Without doubt his worst game for his country. Barely touched ball and ineffective. Then sent off – probably harshly – for a challenge which warranted only yellow. Now misses must-win match against Ghana. Rating: 4. JASON CULINA: Played in unfamiliar role on left in first half and struggled badly as Ozil cut him to shreds. Better when moved into defensive role second half but damage done. Rating: 4. RICHARD GARCIA: Surprise selection who battled manfully in unfamiliar role as striker. Workrate can’t be faulted but one wonders where his best position is for the Socceroos – and if it’s in the starting 11. Rating: 6. Substitutes: BRETT HOLMAN: Gave his usual burst of early second half energy when he replaced Grella. But faded out of the match when team was reduced to 10 men. Rating: 5. NIKITA RUKAVYTSYA: Brought on surprisingly ahead of Harry Kewell for Garcia, and had about as much on-field impact as the people in Row C. Rating: 4. MILE JEDINAK: Late substitution for last 15 minutes. No rating. http://www.theroar.com.au/2010/06/14/socceroos-player-ratings-versus-germany/

You didn't rate the coach, the real disaster. 1/10 - he showed up for the game.

Pim Verbeek 0- You can't play an experimental team against Germany and got punished for it. Should have told his team to stop playing the offside trap after the first goal. Cahill, also, should have started in attacking mid and allowed for Kennedy to play up front to give options. Should know that Culina is not a left sided midfielder. Also his leaving out of Bresciano and Kewell in such a big game is truly disgusting. Honestly can't wait till he leaves!

Regardless of team selections etc., we were totally outclassed. The writing was on the wall in the pre-world cup friendlies. The defense has been too old and slow for a long time - this was shown up in the USA game and yet not heeded. In the USA game, Pim didn't change the defense during the game even though it didn't work - he didn't give anyone else a go. Grella has also been shown up in all three friendlies - and yet he still gets the game. We need some speed all over the park - the Germans skinned us every time they ran forward, midfield players couldn't keep up and track their players. Very dark day for Australian football.

Also, Garcia did OK, but not 6..maybe 4. He was playing in a forward position had two chances and missed both. Macca would have scored both goals. Edited by mattx: 14/6/2010 07:19:06 AM
What makes you think that macca would have scored. he hasnt shown anything playing for the green & gold. Cant get into positions and when has had shots has done nothing ala new zealand game

I'd give Pim a 1/10 for this match also. At least he started Emerton and the right side pairing with Wilkshire was strong.

Schwarz - Not at fault for any of our goals??? What about the second one??
I eleive the wrting has been on the wall for a long, long time, not just after the USA game. Our defence looked decidedly ordinary against the likes of Qatar and Kuwait and only Schwarz kept us in those games. That was the time to introduce Millsy or Beachy (or even the Og Monster or Bosnar) to hopefully create a partnership with Lucas. Instead of choosing your mate, just because you talked him out of retirement. I wonder what type of assurances were given at that time....?? Is it that because he was talked out of retirement that you feel obliged to let him play????
This was never a game I thought we would win, but the manner of defeat is just demoralising.

guitarjohn wrote:There seems to be a lot of Valeri fans on here, but i've gotta say this kid's gotta get his foot on the ball a whole lot more if he wants to earn his spot.
I would only mark it pass, fail and epic fail:
Schwarzer - pass Wilkshire - pass Neill - epic fail Moore - epic fail Chippers - fail/lucky to not get an epic fail Grella - epic fail Valeri - fail Culina - pass Emmo - pass with credit Cahill - fail Garcia - fail Holman - pass Ruka - pass Jedi - pass
Pim - %$^&*##@(*&*^%^ What are you talking about? If you knew anything about football you would of known that Valeri was one of our best players. He not only completed more passes than any other socceroo (with 55), but he also ran 13km which is further than any other player on the pitch. Fail?!?!?! you have no idea

Schwarzer 5 Wilkshire 4 Moore 3 Neill 3 Chipperfield 4 Valeri 6 Grella 3 Emerton 7 Cahill 4 Culina 5 Garcia 4 Holman 6 Rukavytsya 4 Jedinak did nothing to suggest a score
I agree valeri ran more than anyone on the australia team and was in the game a lot more than most. He just kept running and running and running.
I think we're being a bit harsh on chippers.. Wilshire and chipperfield had to cover for the disappointing moore and neill who had trouble playing the offside trap but in saying that, it left them to attack our wings and so it wasn't always going to look good.
Schwarzer may have let in 4 goals but it can be said that he did as much as he could with the pressure he had. 3 of the four goals were tough with the cross being something he should have saved.
Emerton and valeri were our best on the field all day with holman doing enough to warrant a 6 for his contribution in the 2nd half with his hard work and early chance at goal. Can't really say to much about the other subs as the game was pretty much over by then.
I would have rated garcia another point,I really had to think about this one, he probably should be a 5 if he actually had anyone to pass the ball too. He looked good at the start but really didnt do to much after that. I guess I was suprise to see him up front.
Cahill did alright but was left frustrated up front and to me it probably should have been a yellow, not a straight red... I hope this ref never appears in another world cup again.

Holman I actually thought was in our top 2. He certainly added a lot more then a few.
Spiranovic should have been picked. He's one of our better CB's on talent and suitability, but most use experience or lack of matches as a reason.
Germany in the end were way too good and had all the luck (the offside goal for starters), but I guess it didn't matter much in the end. If Emerton gets a 7 then Germany's whole team must get 10.

A dire day for Australia and I agree with the comments that the writing was on the wall in the USA game where we were completely exposed in defense and the German team justed clarified that for us all. The defence just looks too slow to cope with these slick attacking sides. For what it's worth I thought Schwarzer and Emerton were OK but hard to get enthusiastic about everyone else. We've just got to hope that we can regroup for Ghana, but I'd want to see a change in the defence, certainly Beauchamp must play instead of Moore in my view, and I would play Carney on the left also for Chipperfield. And let's see Harry..please!

Wear my IQ on my back wrote:Valeri was one of our best. Chippers not remotely past it - look at the US game. He was obviously told not to attack too much in this game. Play him in midfield for Christsake! As good as Emmo on the other side. I'm glad Cahill is out - give him a chance on the bench to become humble again. And let Harry and some youngest a chance to get out form the Cahill cult. It was always coming since NZ. Not a bad idea moving Chippers to left mid. Agreed about Cahill. You cant possibly call Valeri amongst our best. He was a midfielder that got its arse handed to it. I've never seen a midfield lose out so badly. Ever.

my thoughts.
Schwarzer - 5 - did well with no defence in front of him. completely ballsed up the 2nd goal Wilkshire - 6 - second best player on field, always hit his crosses long Neill - 4 - at fault a couple of times, second best defender though, picked up a STUPID yellow card Moore - 1 - and that's being generous. all he managed to do was fill a gap on the field. picked up a STUPID yellow card Chippers - 4 - thought he did pretty well, not outstanding, not bad. Grella - 3 - on his last legs and on his way out Valeri - 3 - bit of a nothing game for him. neither here nor there. Culina - 4 - as above but he did at least make 1 tackle i can recall Emmo - 7 - best on field for us. showed the class that was lacking in a lot of our players. and this from a guy that is playing his first game back from injury. Cahill - 4 - what the hell could he do in the wrong position with no service? dumb tackle for an undeserved red Garcia - 5 - worked hard. didn't get up to much though in the end. at least he had a shot. Holman - 5 - as above, minus the shot Ruka - 4 - went on to the field and didn't do much Jedi - 3 - as above, picked up a STUPID yellow card
discipline shaping as our biggest challenge i feel.

Ok, not the best time for Pim to experiment, but I'm encouraged that he had the balls to stray from the norm. Hopefully this will pay off later. Most of us were sure we knew the starting 11, depending on kewell's fitness. I think Garcia probably did better than Kennedy would have, judging on his touch in the warm up games.

Rale Rasic, the 1974 Socceroos coach, was interviewed on Stattoz earlier today.
He provides some candid and informed opinions about the match against Germany.

Culina has good skill, but far to sideways and backwards which slows our attack down to walking speed.

yeah i agree with most of those ratings. Moore was okay, I felt Moore was a massive liability to begin with. Culina did ok, but really slowed our transitional plays..too many fanny passes..

Moor did have some and i mean some moments where he did ok against a team who was always going to walk all over him. Not my choice at all. As for Lucas who I have always liked I have to say he was frustrated, he didn't have control over his team. the first goal we shot it deflected of lucas as he stood in the goal mouth. didn't anyone see that. why was he there in the first place. Pim decided to change a team around playing them out of position, I think he has alot to answer. In saying that we will need to pick up our spirits to succeed in the next 2 games. We can do it.

Moore - 5 ??!! You're joking!
Lucas Neill was bad, but he was continually covering for Moore who was caugnt out of position. Look at the replays and see where Moore is as recovery is required. He's standing 10m behind play!!
