One what the SBS viewing figures were, considering it was on at a prime viewing time (7:30pm Perth, 9:30pm East Aus)? I wouldn't be surprised if a few stayed switched on after they saw how well NZ were performing. And we have more than a few ex-pat Kiwis ofcourse.

The All Whites' stunning World Cup opening match drew a combined TV audience of more than 744,000 viewers in New Zealand.

The late night kickoff of 11.30pm (NZ time) didn't deter fans hoping for a glimpse of history.

And they weren't disappointed as the All Whites snatched a late goal to draw 1-all with Slovakia and earn New Zealand its first World Cup point after three losses in their 1982 campaign.

The free-to-air coverage on TV One drew an average audience of 353,800, according to Nielsen, while 593,800 total viewers tuned in to watch at least part of the match, according to TVNZ.

The match, at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg, was also shown live on Sky Sport 2, with an average audience of 101,350 and a total viewership of 150,500.

The match did not finish until 1.20am.

The biggest show on TV One last night remained its 6pm news bulletin, which was watched by 702,710.
