Calm down Ricky

What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Herbert: Bring On Italy?
SUCH is the confidence in the New Zealand camp following its sensational 1-1 draw with Slovakia to open its first World Cup finals appearance in 28 years that not even a next-up meeting against reigning champion Italy is too daunting for the All Whites.

Have your say.

I am a socceroos supporter but enjoyed watching the kiwis play, good luck to them. I would happily afford them bragging rights if they can get up over the Italians!!!

Gaz, since when are Italy convincing in their first game? Its a given!

And people forget that Paraguay qualified high up in the South American qualifiers. They aren't easy beats. And if you watched the game, they parked the bus more than Italy did. Only really had 2 chances on goal (unfortunately 1 went in...).

Can we lose the spammer?

Do you think after the world cup they'd do a swap? Ricki Herbert for Robbie Deans? Oh that's right, they don't need him either. What about we ask Raul back?
Seriously, good luck you kiwis.

Is he high? NZ will never get close! Sure, they did well against Slovakia, but Italy is a completely different prospect.

It was a very good game by New Zealand. Slovakia definatly were the stronger team, but the Kiwis most definatly held their own against them. A good performance by New Zealand, and i felt that they deserved their goal in the end, despite it coming with around 4 seconds to go .

Who was the commantator for that match btw, he did the South Korea/Argentina game last night too. I think he's one of the best commentators around. He does very well solo, and he makes dull games really interesting. He could commentate paint drying and make it interesting. Pulls out all these cool facts here and there, and occasionally makes a joke :D

Maybe some know of the drop off they went through?

Either way, I'm looking forward to seeing New Zealand try and take on Italy anf Paraguay. Better then seeing them just defend...

Read what he said. I took from his comments that

1: Italy are obvioulsy the better team but we are going to make sure they know they have been in a match.

2: we are going to play to our strengths and not be overawed by theirs

3: we gave them a fright last time and as we all know funny things can happen in football

4: If we lose we lose but we are not going to die wondering

Compare this to Australia's comments before the Germany game. "Germany are awesome, they're the best, they're better than us, we have to all play out of our skins to even come close." It's a World Cup. If you can't be bothered trying to win, why be there at all?

I'm looking forward to a vintage Italian performance. Maybe we might give NZ a chance to claim the 2nd spot on goal difference with a narrow win. :P

No it wasnt.. it was nowhere near their third team.. it was half their first and half their second... and they didnt look like beating New Zealand till they subbed on the rest of their A++ players.

Italy has 5.5 REGISTERED Football players.. New Zealand has a entire population of 4 Million... they should be able to beat New Zealand with their 20th team tbh

All Whites with nothing to lose against Italy

Published Date: 20 June 2010
By Mark Meadows

ITALY'S confidence is so brittle that the holders are talking about the threat posed by New Zealand in today's Group F clash rather than boldly predicting how they will destroy the 78th-ranked team.

The Azzurri's 1-1 draw with Paraguay in Monday's group opener was the latest in a series of unconvincing displays and they will be taking nothing for granted at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit despite New Zealand's clear inferiority.

Inexperienced Italy goalkeeper Federico Marchetti will start following Gianluigi Buffon's back injury, adding to the uncertainty witnessed in the defence against Paraguay.

The 27-year-old, who sometimes awkwardly punches the ball, has just six caps and has barely played with Italy's back four.

New Zealand earned their first point at a World Cup when Winston Reid equalised in injury time of their opening 1-1 draw with Slovakia and Italy are concerned about their opponents' height in the box.

"We know they are a very physical squad and good in the air," Marchetti told reporters, aware he will have to command his area if Italy are to avoid any embarrassment.

Forwards Alberto Gilardino and Vincenzo Iaquinta were anonymous against Paraguay and Lippi has not ruled out changes, although making an immediate switch is not his way despite Giampaolo Pazzini and Antonio Di Natale knocking on the door.

The team will continue to alternate between a 4-4-2 formation and a 4-2-3-1 given that the absence of midfielder Andrea Pirlo limits their creative options, although winger Mauro Camoranesi could return to the starting line-up.

New Zealand, who hope vice-captain and midfielder Tim Brown is fit to play after a broken shoulder, will enjoy their moment.

"We've got nothing to lose, nobody is expecting anything from us," defender Tommy Smith said.

"We're just going out there to prove to ourselves that we can cope against the top level teams."

Ummm..... if I remember rightly when we played that game you said it didn't matter cause it was only their 2nd team, now it's their 3rd team? Next time you tell it it will be their under 5 blind team:)

The boys are going to go out there and play their best and try and take it to the Italians. We may not win, we may get completly dicked but Italy will know at the end they have been in a game.NZ will not "roll up the tent and go home" like your guys did against the Germans.

Before you abuse me for that comment, I still think the Socceroos are good enough to make the 2nd round, they have to throw caution to the wind and attack like their lives depend on it as do we.
