I reckon the 2005 Qualifier was the most important. To get us to our first WC in 32 years is more important than any other game we've played in re last 5 years.

Went for the 2005 game - but if we manage to steal a win tonight the upcoming game against Serbia might run it close (as the Croatia game already does).

btw I know that the history of Australian football didn't begin with a John Aloisi penalty, I' just not old enough to comment.

Ghana is the biggest mach since Nov 2005. And prior to Homebush, it was the MCG in '97. We need to write some more history, Socceroos 1 - 0 Ghana

People always seem to forget how important the games we lost meant to us. I don't know about anyone else, but the 2001 qualifier against Uruguay was pretty goddamn important to me at the time.

In fact, that would have been an awesome World Cup if Australia had made it. Most of Australia would have been able to see that particular World Cup, as it was in the same time zone as us (Japan/South Korea).

Even my Dad, who is an avid and traditional AFL fan, actually switched over to the football occasionally on the SBS and admitted it was interesting watching the vast variety of countries playing against each other.

I guess people just forget about the 1997 and 2001 games, because we WANT to forget about it.

The 1997 game is the most devastated I can remember ever being watching a football match.

I would say the Italy game was a really important game also.

I voted for the Italy game, as its the most important on the list. Qualifying for the World Cup was due to happen sooner or later, and I think in level of importance a 1/8 final is more important than the qualifying game.

That said, I think had we qualified in 1997, this whole process would have been bought forward 8 years, and we would have been a completely different (more mature) team than we are at this point, having the pedigree of (potentially) qualifying for the last 4 World Cups, and the development of the game itself in Australia would be reeping its rewards right now (as the 4-14 year olds in 1997 would be the 17-27 year olds now), and we probably would not have to have relied on such old players in this World Cup.

That said, the references to this being the 'most important game in Australia's history' is bollocks and sounds to be like talking out of desparation. Since Verbeek has taken over, there's been a clear change in the team, not only the way they play, but the way they talk and this is further evidence of it. I bet if we win/draw tonight, the game against Serbia becomes 'The most important game in Australia's history', and if we get to the next round the game vs Slovenija/USA/England is 'the most important game in Australia's history'. Heck, at the rate this lot are going, the friendly vs Slovenija in August will be the 'most important game in Australia's history'

Considering this, the 1997 game was the most important, and the most painful to swallow.

I ticked the 2005 qualifier, but maybe because I am biased as I was there and it was the greatest sporting moment of my life!

Uruguay 2005 qualifier.

People like me who can't remember the 1974 World Cup (that's a lot of people) grew up in a time when every 4 years we watched the World Cup out of interest to see how other countries went. Now it's possible my kids might grow up in a time when watching our own team at the World Cup every 4 years becomes an important part of Australia's sporting culture.

1997 would have been what 2005 is... its a shame. dislike remembering... Probably would rank as the worst moment in a poll.

at least in 2005 we learn't from our mistakes of 2001 when farina was in charge.

2005 is probably the most important in the list but the win against japan in 2006 kick started a memorable world cup.

People argue that, but if the Socceroos never made it to that 2006 World Cup I don't think the A-League would of been as big and great as it is right now. That's just my opinion of course.

Formation of the A-League was only successful because of the Uruguay game.

yeah the a-league deserves a mention... Though I don't think the a-league would be here in its current form had it not been for the failures of 1997 and 2001 (wasn't 2001 where football was at its worse domestically and almost bankrupt?)

2000 where the governing body of australian soccer had considered not to send an australian team to an oceania cup because of a lack of funds but eventually relented to pressure and sent a 3rd string team (which i think included chipperfield who paid for his own way there? or am i confusing some other competition?)

But what do i know is that today is a pretty big important game in australian history... I'll be relief once its over esp if we play good (win lose or draw)

*enjoys being back wearing the aussie shirt* :D

I vote for either Iran (home) in 1997, or Uruguay (away) in 2001. If Australia had won either, we most likely wouldn't have the A-League, and we'd probably still be under the dodgy management of Soccer Australia.
