HARRY KEWELL AND MARCO BRESCIANO TO START AGAINST GHANA

OPENING-match outcasts Harry Kewell and Mark Bresciano look set to start tonight's decisive World Cup qualifier against Ghana.

Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek has decided that he will try to attack Ghana's injury-plagued defence tonight, with the stakes raised following Serbia's 1-0 upset over Germany overnight.

Kewell, 31, will finally be unleashed as the lone striker in a bid to expose Ghana's defence - first-choice central pairing John Mensah (Sunderland) and Isaac Vorsah (Hoffenheim) in serious doubt for the match.

His non-selection has been the biggest talking point of the World Cup but he has convinced Verbeek that he is ready to start after partaking in full-scale training for the past fortnight.

Kewell underwent groin surgery last February and has had minimal gametime for Galatasaray since.

But Verbeek looks set to return to his tried-and-tested formula from the qualifying campaign after his German gamble backfired spectacularly in Durban.

Makeshift striker Richard Garcia and injured midfielder Vince Grella will make way, while Brett Holman will be a straight replacement for suspended Tim Cahill.

It's understood Vince Grella's World Cup is all but over, with the midfielder suffering a grade 2 medial ligament tear, which usually rules a player out for up to a month. Despite that, the Socceroos officially haven't given up on him.

Sources say that the maligned Grella is devastated, although he will stay with the squad to receive treatment.

Jason Culina will vacate the left wing for Bresciano and revert back to his preferred holding midfield position alongside Carl Valeri.

But Verbeek is also likely to give Dario Vidosic game-time after impressing at training this week, and following several good performances in friendlies.

David Carney could be the other surprise inclusion, although veteran Scott Chipperfield is still likely to get the nod at this stage.

Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac admitted that he had defensive issues ahead of tonight's game.

"Vorsah has not been training over the past seven days, we will see tomorrow, but I don't think he will be able to play," Rajevac said.

"We will see how the situation is with Mensah, but we have other players who can replace them you know. We have enough players to come in and replace them."

The match kicks off at midnight (AEST).

Is it worth risking Kewell's groin and 2010 season for this match IMO - Yes. Put it on the line - get out there and fight!

Bresciano, Kewell to start: report

WILL BRODIE
June 19, 2010 - 5:40PM

The Socceroos look to bounce back from their opening loss to Germany in the World Cup, and are set to play Ghana in a must-win clash.
Video feedbackVideo settings
Melbourne's SEN radio is reporting that Socceroos stars Mark Bresciano and Harry Kewell will start tonight's do-or-die group game against Ghana.

The high-profile pair did not play a minute in Australia's disastrous first match, a 0-4 loss to Germany. Brett Holman is expected to line up as an attacking midfielder, replacing suspended star Tim Cahill. Carl Valeri and Jason Culina are tipped to resume more familiar roles in the midfield.

Vince Grella is out of the team with a knee injury.

The only other selection quandary is whether David Carney will come in for Scott Chipperfield in the backline.

Coach Pim Verbeek came under fire for his unexpected selection gambits against the Germans. He said he was going to introduce the underdone Kewell in the second half, but decided against it after Cahill was sent off.

Richard Garcia started reasonably in an unfamiliar role as a striker, but with Australia needing goals to stay alive in the tournament, it appears Australia will revert to a conventional attack, with Kewell up front and Bresciano on the left.

Bresciano, a fine performer at the 2006 World Cup, and over many years for the national team, has had a troubled preparation due to injury, and Verbeek said his form had not warranted selection in the Germany game.

Tall striker Josh Kennedy remains out-of-favour, but may have to come on as Kewell is unlikely to be fit enough to see out the entire game, after battling groin issues.

It's absolute garbage that mister Kennedy misses out.

As glad as I am to hear Harry will be starting, it's the same old scenario that he will be isolated as the lone striker and will struggle to be effective. How about Pim show's some ball's and partners him with Kennedy so Kewell isn't the only focal point in the final third of the pitch.

its a different formation to the one played against germany, kewell possesses the technical ability to hold the ball up well, and he'll be better supported by holman, bresciano and culina then cahill was by garcia, at least i hope.

It all hinges on Holman, he has the ability to get forward and support the lone striker, Bresciano and Emerton can hopefully provide some good width to open up spaces in the centre of the park for him. Holman has impressed me recently with his movement off the ball, hopefully it continues tonight.

I'd prefer him playing as a true number 10 behind Kennedy, but the lone striker role will have to do.

I'll be surprised if he plays all that well. I still maintain that he should've been put on for 15min at the end of the Germany game - we'd lost it already by then anyway, and if the groin can't last 15min then I'd have preferred to find out then than tonight.

Bresc has at least had game time so despite not being in spectacular form at least he should hold up *touch wood*.

I've been impressed by Holman in his last couple of showings, hopefully he brings that energy to the team that he has been and they all lift with him.

P.S. GO AUSTRALIA!

Told you all Holman would start :P

Happy with that team to be honest.

EDIT: Just saw Carney at LB for Chip. NOT happy. #-o #-o #-o #-o

10 bucks says a goal comes down his left side because he isnt where he should be.

I'll take that bet and say that we'll concede because he will run STRAIGHT at his opponent and give the ball away in a stupid position.
