so really, we had two of the worst refs in 2/3 of our matches. No wonder we were complaining about the refereeing! What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Dodgy Ref Sent Home By Fifa? THE REFEREE whose decision denied Frank Lampard a goal in the game that ended England's World Cup hopes has been axed by FIFA.Have your say.

Thought the ref in the Spain v Portugal match overnight did a good job too. Howard Webb must be one of the favourites to take the final.

the refs in the epl and bundesliga do a much better job than the ones weve had here.....
sending a ref home is not going to change anything. this is just a step from fifa to make it seem like they doing something.

Claytons call from FIFA, this guy was never going to be handed a quarter final anyway so announcing it is a way of deflecting critism. Video replay wont slow the games any more than they already get slowed followinga controversial decision - especially ones that are clearly incorrect.

What annoys about the whole thing is that when a small nation complains it is called whinging but when a bigger nation complains it is because they have suffered an injustice. FIFA in response blame the refs when really if they had the adequate support we wouldn’t even be talking about this and focusing only on the football, the way it should be.

The Uruguayan referee is the innocent victim from the Lampard goal-no goal. When the incident happened he was standing behind Lampard and the defender while the goalkeeper and another defender was also between the referee and the ball. He was entitled to no see it but there is no excuse for his linesman who was positioned inside the 18 yard box with a clear sight of the incident. By FIFA making the referee the scapegoat for their lack of foresight regarding the use of video shows just how out of touch the governing body is. I actually thought the Uruguayan referee had done a good job in the Aust v Ghana game as well as the England v Germany game, minus that incident which, I don't blame him for. FIFA are the ones pushing the tag of "assistant referee" for linesman, again one has proved they should stick to offsides and deciding whose throw it is or corner/goalkick. Agree with the comments of the Argentinian referee - he was outstanding in Spain v Portugal. The game flowed you didn't really notice him, That's what we want from referees. Have they sent the Mexican one home yet? he should have been the first to go.

I SMELL A SCAPE GOAT
Agree with Heineken. Too many yellows and reds and then the best get suspended and then we are left with only few of the best. Whats the point when the World Cup is suposed to be an exhibition of the best gathering at the one tournement?

The showpiece of the world's greatest game has become a comedy of errors and an endless source of one-liners for stand-up comincs the world over. I want Frank Lowy to run for FIFA president. :)

The referee should in no way be held responsible for the Lampard incident. It's his linesman that should be held fully responsible for either being out of position or blind because that's the only way you couldve missed that.

If ever there was two standards here it is.
England complain and guess what....somthing gets done.
Australia complain (2006 V italy) and we are whinging until 2 years later you say "sorry".
Nothing political about football!

The truth is, now we are down to the quarter finals, they've probably sent most of the referees home. They only need 4 sets of officials from here on in. Surely the best four get the quarter finals, the best 2 get the semi's and the best one gets the final. So out of the 30 sets of officials they had at the start, only four are still needed.

Wasn't Howard Webb the douche who refereed the Aus/croatia game in 06?

He's about the only ref not to make a cock-up so far.

Webb was the douche that disallowed Viduka's goal in the second-to-last game that Newcastle played in the Prem. two seasons ago, which was the final nail in the Toon's coffin.

The goal was disallowed for a reason. And IIRC Newcastle were 3-1 down at the time so it wouldn't have made much difference.

That is unless one of them fucks up massively between now and then. What I like about Howard Webb is he's a referee that won't take shit from any players and really takes charge. I guess it helps being a copper.

Yeah, Uzbek...that's the country  He did a really good job. Webb's the same bloke that's sent off Vidic, Mascherano and Scholes in one match though.
