Well IMO they cheated to give themselves a (slim) chance, and it came off. I think it's dirty and wrong, but what else could be done? Red card, penalty, their is not much more you could do to penalise them for it.

Gotta feel for Ghana.

Have to feel sorry for Gyan.

Misses a penalty with the last kick of ET and then hits an unsaveable penalty in the shootout.

Luis Suarez a Uruguayan national hero perhaps.

I understand the sentiment, but still, Gyan didn't put away the penalty, the ref gave him every opportunity to win the game, and he cracked.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it would've been the first time for an African side in the semi's of a World Cup?

Yep they would've been the first and Gyan would have equalled Roger Milla's African World Cup goal scoring record of 5 goals with that penalty.

If only he could switch the penalties around.

Uruguay to finish 4th after losing to the Netherlands and then Germany in the 3rd 4th place playoff.

I wish that rule could be changed, that if a blatant handball is committed to prevent a goal, "advantage" should be given to the attacking team, who are awarded a goal and the player who has committed the handball getting a yellow card. With incidents like Harry Kewell getting sent off for the same thing though, I don't know how it'd be used.

Seriously though, what a shit stain that puts on that game for anyone who doesn't follow Uruguay. Suarez may be a national hero, but he's a dirty, cheating little shit to me.

I dunno about a rule change. But it certainly seems unfair to make up for a "certain" goal with an "almost certain" goal. As it stands it's basically proof that cheating can pay off.

That's the bit that gets me.. This situation will hardly ever come up, but a certain goal, should be counted as a certain goal. How is it fair to put that much pressure onto a player to put away a penalty in stoppage time of extra time, when it was clear they should already be celebrating.

TBH I wouldn't go that far. Suarez wasn't thinking about winning the game he came off in tears he thought he'd lost it. It's more just a rush of blood and instant reaction that was unfortunate but as was mentioned what better chance did Gyan want to win the game than a penalty in the last minute of extra time.

Not to mention Ghana should have scored the first shot that got cleared off the line.

After they got the penalty some of the players did start sort of celebrating because they thought that Gyan would out it away which he really should have.

Couldn't handle the pressure. I thought it was ironic how he hits such a shit penalty and then in the shoot out hits the best penalty you'll ever see

I reckon, nothing would've stopped it. I was surprise he could be man enough and step up again though, I'd be destroyed.

I still maintain that the best penalty to his is into the top corners. Unless the 'keeper is 8ft tall, it is physically impossible for them to reach it from where they're standing the middle of the goal. Why players insist on rolling it along the ground astonishes me, it gives the 'keeper far too much chance.

Only problem is that it is extremely hard to get it enough into top corner out of the keepers reach. There's just to much danger of putting it either to high or at the perfect height for the keeper ti save it. It's just to fine a line.

The safest penalty to hit is low and hard into the bottom corner and I mean right in the corner which again is impossible to save unless the keeper goes early and gets lucky.

Or you could go for power and do what the Uruguyan did and sky it

I've thought about this before, and would honestly do the exact same thing in Suarez's position. Doesn't make it right or wrong, I'm still undecided on that, but I would certainly do it.

Its the same divine right that Australia always talks about 2006 saying they could have easily made the semis. Just like now, saying the same stupid comments.

May not have been divine right for Uruguay. But once Gyan missed that penalty, Ghana were never going to win.
