With a one match ban FIFA said that being hit on the shoulder as you close your eyes and move your arms rearward is the same as diving at the ball with both hands outstretched, while a team mate does the same.

There are degrees of cheating, and Suarez' was the worst, kind of like sending your thugs to attack the opposition at the airport before a World Cup qualifier. F*ck URGay.

I'm pretty sure it's you who needs to consult a dictionary Julia; as phutbol pointed out, there's nothing unusual about the use of seminal in that context, 'semenal' (although I don't think that's actually a word) may have been a bit creepy but seminal is fine by my understanding of the english language.

Yeah, you're right. And so was Paul which is slightly creepy now.

I always put in an obvious mistake just to see if Kevin spots it :d

Paul picked Spain to win tonight's game. I hope it just cos he likes the brighter colours, and not cos he really is psychic.

FWIW, cheating is not the same as breaking the laws of the game. Cheating is intentionally breaking the laws of the game and getting away with it. Suarez didn't get away with anything. He was caught, punished on the spot and admitted guilt.
Its not his fault the laws of the game only give him a red, a penalty against and 1 match suspension. Blame FIFA for that, not the player on the brink of a WC semi final.

No, it is just deliberately breaking a rule, cheating is the action, not the consequence.

In the example i gave above if your wife came in to find you shagging someone else you wouldn't have gotten away with it but you still definitely cheated. If i 'cheat' someone out of money and then get done for fraud i haven't gotten away with it but i still cheated. Similarly if i get caught reading notes i shouldn't have in an exam it's still cheating.

Every single time someone deliberately breaks an agreed upon rule they are cheating, be it on the sports field or any other aspect of life. This incident has obviously attracted more attention than the routine cheating that goes on in your average game of football. The ethics/double standards for that over Suarez are completely up for grabs, that's fine, but can people please stop trying to bastardise the English language to make a point?

apart from his blue turtleneck and Macca haircut, Loew would be brilliant for OZ. And with no announcement yet from the FFA despite only 3 teams left in the tournament, perhaps that's because our new coach is in fact still in the tournament! One can only wish.

From Dictionary.com

Seminal (adjective)

4. highly original and influencing the development of future events: a seminal artist; seminal ideas.

Not sure how 'highly orginal the goal was, but in the context of the game, and its effect on the development of future events at the WC, it could indeed have been described as a 'seminal moment'....

No.

Cheating, by definition, is an act of deliberately breaking agreed upon rules.

If you call your wife and say 'hey lass, about to shag some other bint, just letting you know' before shagging some other bint you are still cheating on your wife. Deception is commonly part of cheating, but it is not the defining attribute.

Okay fair enough.

But my point is what difference does it make if Suarez has the balls to say 'yep i meant it' instead of 'it was a reflex' (like Henry/Kewell). At least he is being honest and we know that they all mean it. I would think that Suarez has more integrity for admitting his guilt rather than trying to deceive the public (similar to Henry).

...it sickens me to see them boasting about cheating their way to success.

A blatant and intentional handball is bad enough, but to admit to it and receive no punishment surely brings the game into disrepute.

"This was the end of the World Cup", said Suarez, "I had no choice." Um, yes you did. You could choose to respect the rules of the game, you could choose personal integrity over bad sportsmanship. But you didn't.

The rules of the game state that Suarez will receive a red card for denying a goalscoring opportunity with his hand and Ghana will be rewarded a penalty kick.

Are you saying that people are 'cheating' by breaking the rules of the game? Every offside, free kick, foul throw are all cheating?

Cheating is an act of lying or deception. There was no lie, no deception. The referee saw it and he received the appropriate punishment under the laws of the game. If you have a problem with his punishment you should be critical of FIFA.

I have no idea how you can be critical of Suarez for admitting that to what he did. Spur of the moment, a world cup on the line and he used his hand to block a goal-scoring opportunity. So did Harry Kewell, so did Nemanja Vidic (only he only got a yellow).

Please don't pull the 'Harry didn't mean it' line either we all know that's bullshit.
