Attendances to pass 3 million, third best
Reuters - July 7, 2010, 9:56 pm

JOHANNESBURG, July 7 (Reuters) - The overall attendance at the World Cup in South Africa will pass 3 million at Wednesday's semi-final, making it the third highest after the United States in 1994 and Germany in 2006, FIFA said.

Total attendances so far have been 2.997 million at 61 games, for an average of 49,134, according to latest figures from soccer's international governing body.

The U.S. tournament 16 years ago drew a record 3.59 million, followed by Germany at the last World Cup with 3.36 million.

"Here in South Africa it is only the third time in the history of the World Cup that we will have passed 3 million," FIFA spokesman Nicolas Maingot said.

"That is a resounding success."

Attendance at fan parks inside South Africa, and elsewhere around the world, would top 5 million after Wednesday night's game between Germany and Spain in Durban, he added.

No,its because-despite all the doomsayers here and across the world-the stadiums are reasonably full with the exception of the odd game at Nelson Mandela Bay,Nelspruit,Polokwane and Rustenburg but thats totally understandable

Crowd numbers have been good overall I must say. They have performed better than I expected. SA has done well, but I guess we will only hear all of the major negative reports after it is all done and dusted, as always.

That US '94 holds the record for attendances surprised me. Thats gotta be a consideration for their 2018/2022 bids. I'm sure FIFA likes the idea of exceeding their highest ever attendance, now that "soccer" is much bigger and better organised in the US than it was in '94.

Not really a surprise tbh.

They have the biggest population of any nation to ever host a WC and one thing I will give the Yanks credit for is for big sports events they really turn out in big numbers.

The Womens World Cup is an example in the 1999 for the Final in the Rose Bowl they had 90,185 turn up which is just unbelievable.

If you look at the USA v Australia bids it not a competition really, the only thing that would stop the USA bid is anti-america sentiment.

Theres that, and the fact that the US really has not gone that much further in its development to date, even with the WC in '94.

If those kinds of things are considered, then the US may not be as great a bid as we all suspect. If it is all about the money, then the US is a long way ahead.

In saying that, Asia is where the upcoming cash is in the game, so Australia being in a similar timezone to China, for instance, there is a massive cash cow for the game, without the risks that FIFA may see having a WC there.

Highest crowds. I wonder how many tickets were sold though?

Half those tickets were probably given away following the ticketing disasters that preceded this cup.

It is great for them with these attendance numbers, however you can only imagine what the crowd figures could have been if all tickets were sold and stadiums were full etc.
Have to say well done though.

Thats certainly a point. I guess we will find out at the end of the cup in the wash up or not at all. Could be a well hidden secret :)
