I mentioned this months ago in another thread, but the misuse of the word "infer" is a pet hate of mine. A speaker/writer doesn't infer, the listener/reader does.

I think it's explained somewhere in this thread. To put it simply, it's used when two statements aren't quite independent enough to be separate sentences, but not completely dependant on each other.

Why is this ~ on a keyboard? Surely the most pointless of symbols.

I love that symbol. It essentially means 'about'. I use it ~5 times a week.

Another thing.

Instance and incidents. What really gets me is people who say 'incidentses'. Sorry but.. ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?!

When you use a ! and a ? at the same time which comes first?

How does one confuse instance and incidents? I can understand incidence and incidents.

How does one use "and" in the context of "an" ?! (see what I did there? :P)

Most of my gripes come from fox sports news hearing the borderline illiterate footy players read their scripted answers.

They say incidentsssssss instead of instances. eg. "In these instances we see..." CORRECT > "In these incidentssssss we seen..." INCORRECT





I usually type !? in that order because its more attractive but I wrote ?! because I initially had ??? but then thought that showed more frustration than anger. The correct way is to only use one. :lol:

Anyone else notice so many people cannot spell 'definitely' right?

All the time I see 'definately' 'defanitely' stuff like that. That shit pisses me off.

I always had trouble with that. I just think of it as: 'definite' then with 'ly' added to the end. Seems to do the trick.

The problem is words like separately and legitimately that confuse people.

I often misspell Middlesbrough as Middlesborough.

TBH I always thought it was this.

that would be 'cos their nickname is borough, confusing isn't it

anyway, i noticed the other day that some one has put these plain black and white posters up all around the cbd of hobart saying 'dear bogans, it's you, not 'youse', yours sincerely the english language.' i'd like to meet who ever did that :lol:

Words like 'fertile' and 'vitamin' shit me becuase you can say them two ways, and whenever I say them I'm always corrected

How do you say fertile in two ways?

By saying 'tile' or just 'tull' on the end of the word

Never seen 'tull' before tbh haha
