I believe the Bengals kicker was hurt during that game and their coach knew Chad could kick well and better than their punter. Punters are usually the gametime backup kickers if anything goes wrong as most teams only carry one kicker and punter on their roster.

Yeah, I can understand that, it's not like they're ever really in the thick of the action so they're not as likely to get injured...

Andy, I've been thinking about joining one of my local NFL sides (I live in Melbourne), I was just wondering how seriously they take it and what level of experience is needed. I'm not the biggest bloke by NFL standards (6'2" and 90kg) and I'm just coming back from an injury, is it worth taking a look?

The thing is, the positions that I'm familiar with playing (running back, quarter back and center back) are all popular positions and I don't think I'd get in the team there.

I used to be able to throw a football 40+ yards before my injury, I don't know what's expected of QB's at this level.

center back huh?

go to a team. theyll fit you in somewhere. you cant expect to be starting QB anywhere. And dont take it too seriously all youll just be disappointed.
QB is more about memorising a playbook rather than throwing 60 yards.

Center, not Center back. Was just on a roll with the backs.

I wouldn't expect to be a starting QB anywhere. Memorising the calls isn't such a big deal these days, most of the QB's have them written down lol. I'm thinking I'll just head down to monash and see how things are run down there.

Hey mate

Yeah just go on down and introduce yourself and they will sort of work out a position for you based on the teams needs, your size, and your ability.

I am somewhat tall and skinny and went to a pre season training thinking I might be a cornerback or safety. Ended up getting turned into a wide receiver before I did my shoulder and decided to went to the US for a holiday instead of playing haha.

I prepared beforehand by doing a lot of running to get fit and it really paid off. Ended up being one of the fittest and fastest guys by end of pre season. Also go and buy yourself a ball to get used to it and just walk around the house with it. Suprised at how much that made a difference.

Hope that helps

Andy

Strange set of positions there afro.

All 3 positions have completely different skills sets and require different strength in different areas of the body.

Your website lacks a forum! And local league coverage.

Afro
I played a few years with a now defunct team here in Sydney. I'd played rugby league and was fairly difficult to bring down when I got up a head of steam, so I thought running back would be the go when I signed up. Turns out I ain't the type they're after for that position (bit like Brandon Jackson, but slower). I ended up playing left guard most of the time, with the occasional down at defensive end.
Everyone goes in thinking they can play one of the ball handling positions. Most teams (in Sydney at least) run the ball a lot.

Yeah, I've been thinking about buying a ball. I've got an undersize ball from when I was a kid but I was thinking about buying a full-size one just to throw around with mates. I'm worried about my arm still though. I've been playing some indoor football and running to get some fitness back up but it's hard to get motivated to do stuff one-handed when my arm gives out.

I'd expect that to be the case largely because the QB's and receivers aren't up to standard.

That just means that if there's someone who can make the passes they're more likely to succeed. Do want.
