Cesc Fabregas Set To Make A Return In Champions League

Cesc Fabregas is believed to be fit enough to return to action when Arsenal take on Shakhtar Donetsk this week in the Champions League.

The 23-year-old had been sidelined with a hamstring injury during a freak incident in the 1-1 draw with Sunderland, which saw the Spain international unwittingly score a goal through a rebound from his leg.

The Gunners' captain had declared himself fit during the international break, but played no part in the recent victory over Birmingham City. But now The Mirror reports that the midfielder will make a comeback during Tuesday's game against Shakhtar.

The encounter with the Ukrainian outfit at the Emirates Stadium will also see the return of Eduardo, who left Arsenal during the summer.

Great news if true. Was surprised he didn't play on the weekend. Great with him coming back now with Wilshere out suspended. Is a massive boost for the Man City game.

Arsene currently in a press conference at the moment. Fabregas and Walcott both in contention to start against Shakthar which is excellent news.

Apparently RVP out for 3 more weeks.

 LOved Wenger's respons to Bert Van Marwijk's claim that RVP will play for Holland against Turkey. 'he has good sense of humour. No chance.'

Wenger - Cesc is fully fit but may not start

By Richard Clarke

Cesc Fabregas will be at ‘full fitness’ for the Champions League tie with Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night – but he still might not start the game.

The Arsenal captain hobbled off at Sunderland just over a month ago with a hamstring injury and has been missing ever since. He was set to return for the visit of Birmingham on Saturday but his reappearance was delayed by a small setback. On Tuesday, no such problems are being anticipated however the Spaniard may still begin on the bench.

Theo Walcott did not finish Monday’s training session because of a small toe problem. But that is not expected to keep him out against Shakhtar. The ankle that had sidelined him before Saturday is fine.

However Laurent Koscielny (back), Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles), Robin van Persie (ankle) and Manuel Almunia (elbow) are still out.

“Cesc is available,” said Wenger at Monday’s pre-match press conference. “He is good and has prepared well.

“He had a little setback but got over the hurdle and is ready to play at full fitness.

“I do not know yet whether I start him or not but he is available. It will be [determined by] whether I take a gamble or not, because he has been out for a long time.

“I have to make up my mind tomorrow but physically he is ready, fit and wanting to play.”

The manager was also going to consider Walcott’s involvement overnight.

“Theo has a toe problem,” said Wenger. “But his ankle is all right and he is in the squad. It would be difficult for me to tell you who will start because I do not know yet.

“But Koscielny, Vermaelen and Van Persie are all out and not available.”

I think we might see Nasri-Wilshere-Song/Denilson in the middle with Walcott starting on the right and Fabregas to come on in the second half.

Arsenal goalkeeper Vito Mannone joins Hull City on loan

Hull City have signed goalkeeper Vito Mannone on loan from Premier League side Arsenal until January.

Mannone has made 12 appearances for the Gunners since joining from Italian side Atalanta in 2005, but has struggled to hold down a first-team spot.

The 22-year-old, who has represented Italy at Under-21 level, enjoyed a short loan spell at Barnsley in 2006, making four appearances.

He is available for Hull's Championship match with Sheffield United on Tuesday.

It seems Wenger has finally figured out which keeper he doesn't need.

Eduardo relishing Arsenal reunion

Eduardo will make an emotional return to Arsenal with Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night - and is unlikely to celebrate should he score at the Emirates Stadium.

The 27-year-old Croatian forward headed to Ukraine in a £6million deal during the summer after finding himself down the Arsenal order following the free transfer signing of Marouane Chamakh.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger found it emotional to see the Brazil-born striker leave, after he fought back to full fitness following an horrific broken leg and dislocated ankle at Birmingham in February 2008.

Eduardo maintains the time was right for him to move on, but still holds a special affection for the Gunners.

"It was great times here with Arsenal, but now I am on the other side and play for Shakhtar," said Eduardo, signed by Wenger from Dinamo Zagreb in July 2007 for a reported £7.5million.

"I will give them 100 per cent, am ready to play and will give my all best tomorrow."

However, Eduardo added: "I don't think I will celebrate.

"I respect the club.

"I had some great moments here and have respect for the supporters and Mr Wenger, for the club.

"I came from Croatia and learned a lot at Arsenal. Now I have more experience than before.

"When you play for Dinamo Zagreb and someone like Mr Wenger finds you, takes you to play in the Premier League, that is big respect. He believed in me.

"But now the most important thing is that now I am on the other side I will give all my best tomorrow.

"If I score, it will be good for Shakhtar.

"Hopefully we can finish with a positive result."

Eduardo believes he made the right decision to seek a fresh start.

"Of course it was hard to leave. When you spend three years at a club you have great moments, then after that there were some problems with my injury," he said.

"I am nearly 28 and I made a good decision to play for Shakhtar because they are a big club in Europe. This is life.

"The injury is passed, I don't like to talk about that.

"Now I am 100 per cent fit, playing football again and am enjoying it."

Eduardo added: "Donetsk is a very nice city and the club is very good, the stadium is one of the best in Europe.

"There are seven or eight Brazilian guys, they help me, the boss also speaks Portuguese and so he can help. I am very happy there."

Eduardo feels his old club just need a bit of luck to go all the way in Europe.

"The Champions League is very difficult for every club, for Manchester United, for Barcelona, for Chelsea," he said.

"Every year Arsenal play the quarter-finals, semi-finals, they just need more luck to play in the final and to win."

Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu refused to confirm whether Eduardo would start on Tuesday night.

However, the Romanian admitted: "It is bound to be emotional.

"He will be on the field - when, we will see.

"Eduardo wanted so much to play in Arsenal, he wanted to remain here, but his injury created such problems.

"Now it is Shakhtar who are helping him to come back to a big, big level.

"I hope he will return to the level he was before Arsenal.

"It could be this year, if we continue to have good results in the Champions League."

Eduardo has been utilised mostly as a substitute for his new club.

Lucescu said: "He has only played one whole match - he has to recuperate.

"Eduardo has got potential. He is a very professional player, a very intelligent and skilful player, and I hope that he will forget what happened."

Like Arsenal, Shakhtar have won both of their games in Group H.

"We are here to get a result," Lucescu insisted.

"I know Arsene Wenger very well, from when he was a coach at Nantes in France.

"We remain in contact, but this is about football and we have the same ideas."

Reserves: Arsenal 4-1 West Ham

Arsenal thrashed West Ham United 4-1 to continue their impressive start to the Premier Reserve League season. A first half strike from Chuks Aneke set The Gunners on their way, before Jay Emmanuel-Thomas claimed a stylish hat-trick. Former academy product Ahmed Abdulla pulled one back late on.

Both sides had first-team experience up front, with Arsenal boasting Mexican international Carlos Vela while The Hammers started with journeyman striker Benny McCarthy.

Shea
Nordtveit – Hoyte – Miquel (c) – Meade
Lansbury – Eastmond – Aneke
Sunu – Vela – Emmanuel-Thomas

Subs: Martinez, Henderson, Randall, Afobe, Murphy.

Arsenal began well at a damp London Colney, immediately forcing their visitors onto the back foot. Gilles Sunu was in the thick of the early action, spraying two shots at Stech in an exciting early period.

West Ham had chances to hit back but all the better chances came from Arsenal who were beginning to dominate. However, it took until the 44th minute before the opener came. Vela and Emmanuel-Thomas played some superb touch football, the latter fired in a strong cross which Stech could only palm into the air. Aneke was on hand to nod home. 1-0.

The second half was just 9 minutes old before the hosts doubled their lead in amazing fashion. Emmanuel-Thomas cut in from the right-hand side, beat two defenders and calmly placed the ball past Stech to double Arsenal’s lead. 2-0.

Vela had a selection of chances to get on the score sheet, but he struggled to find his range. The hosts soon had their third, Murphy was tripped in the box and Emmanuel-Thomas converted the penalty for 3-0.

Jay had ran the show and 3 minutes late he got his hat-trick. From all of 30 yards out, he turned and rifled an unstoppable left-foot shot just inside the post. Stech dived full length but couldn’t get there. 4-0.

There was just enough time for Abdulla to squeeze in a strike against his former club to make it 4-1, but Arsenal had cruised to another comprehensive win.

Preview: Arsenal - Shakhtar Donetsk

By Richard Clarke

“He arrived here and became a star very quickly. But when you are out for nine months at this level, and even after you are back you struggle and need another surgery, then you have a hell of a problem.

“Credit to him, he never put out any sign of giving up. But it was just too big a hurdle for him because when you are out for such a long time someone else can always come in.”

That is Arsène Wenger’s two-paragraph epitaph on the Arsenal career of Eduardo.

The striker had first caught the manager’s eye by scoring for Dinamo Zagreb in a Champions League qualifier at Emirates Stadium in 2006 – the first European goal at Arsenal’s ‘new’ home.

So it is richly ironic that he returns for the first time since his move to Shakhtar Donetsk in the same competition on Tuesday evening.

His three-year spell in North London ended in the summer but was defined back in February 2008 at Birmingham when he suffered an horrific broken leg and dislocated ankle.

“It was a bad day,” mused Wenger at Monday’s press conference. “A very bad day.

“He was injured and we dropped points in the last seconds of a game after a penalty that was difficult to take.

“He didn't lose his ability,” the manager went on, “He lost his confidence. You never know exactly about the psychological damage to a player [after an injury like that] because there is no physical damage.

“But most of the time when they get into exactly the position they got injured, they have a resistance. It is unbelievable. They play normally until they get into that position and then have a reluctance.

“His case is difficult to measure. Was it the time he was out? Or was it that some players moved in front of him?

“You waste your time when you miss a year at the top level.

“But don't forget that, after the injury, I extended his contract. He had shown signs he was coming back to his normal level but, after that, he had little muscular problems, was in and out then decided to go.

“There was no interest from clubs in England. But Shakhtar wanted him last year when I extended his contract.”

Eduardo has returned to England at a time when dangerous tackling is under the media microscope once more. The Croatian’s career-changing experience is one of a number of incidents that has fuelled Wenger’s anger on the matter over the past few years.

The Frenchman is the flag-bearer for the cause. The fact that the latest example - Jack Wilshere’s challenge on Nikola Zigic on Saturday – came from an Arsenal player is unimportant to him. Both manager and the midfielder expressed regret and disappointment afterwards.

We can only hope the challenges received by Wilshere throughout the rest of his career garner the same amount of attention.

Tuesday’s game will be the last action the 18-year-old will see for a fortnight. The temptation must be to play him however, on the eve of the game, Wenger was unsure.

“Maybe he’ll start yes,” he said. “I don't know yet. I have not picked the team yet but I don't rule it out.

“I think he has got over Saturday already. He has a good rest after tomorrow. The good thing is that he will be out for three games but only one week because we play in midweek against Newcastle in the Carling Cup. That will give him a good breather.”

You could argue that Wilshere’s impending suspension might have helped put Cesc Fabregas on the bench against Shakhtar. Why rush the skipper back after hamstring trouble when his soon-to-be-suspended counterpart is in such fine form? The Spaniard needs a run of some sort before the trip to Manchester City on Saturday but his apprentice has been more than holding the fort.

Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles), Robin van Persie (ankle), Laurent Koscielny (back) and Manuel Almunia (elbow) are still out. However the last of those is very close to a return.

“He is at 90, 95 per cent,” said Wenger. “He has had training sessions but he still has a bandage on his elbow and when he extends his arm he has to stop. It is not easy.”

If Group H has been a stroll for Arsenal so far then Shakhtar have matched them stride for stride.

The teams are tied at the top of the table with six points from two games. If there is a victor on Tuesday then that team can pretty much coast into the Knockout Stages from there.

That would be as far as Shakhtar have ever gone in this competition and they seem an altogether stronger side than the one beaten 3-2 at Highbury a decade ago thanks to two goals from Martin Keown in the last five minutes.

They won the Ukrainian League last year by losing just one game. This term, they have won 15 of 17 matches and arrive at Emirates Stadium on a run of seven straight wins.

Over the summer they added quality in key positions from top European clubs. Eduardo arrived up front and centre Dmtryo Chygrynskiy was re-signed from Barcelona. Douglas Costa is one of seven Brazilian in the squad of Mircea Licescu and has been compared with Ronaldinho. Meanwhile Darijo Srna comes with a mighty reputation from free-kicks.

“It is a key game because it gives us an opportunity to basically think we have qualified,” said Wenger.

“In this group you have had 12 points at stake - six went to Shakhtar, six went to Arsenal. That means what is at stake now is qualification and also being the top of the group.

“They are on a good winning run. They are dominating their league and have just won 3-0 at Braga. We are on our toes. We know that only a great performance will win us the game.”

To be honest, qualification is not at stake on Tuesday. Surely Arsenal will still reach the Knockout Stages even if they lose to Shakhtar. However this game could well decide top spot in Group H and, in theory, the chance of an easier draw in the last 16 next February.

While Arsenal needed a win at all costs on Saturday frankly Tuesday is not so desperate. However dropping points in this game could store up problems later down the line.

Absolutely brilliant win this morning. Bit of a slow start but we really grew into the game. Wilshere again was brilliant, Jesus bossed the midfield in his first game back. Rosicky and Nasri were great.

Massive  at the Chamakh goal. Even he thought he was offside.

That cheer for the Eduardo goal is probably the only time that will ever happen. It would have happened if henry scored but there's no chance of that anymore. Excellent way to start the morning.

Report: Arsenal 5-1 Shakhtar Donetsk

By Richard Clarke

Arsenal took an almighty stride towards qualification to the Champions League Knockout Stages with a fabulous 5-1 win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night.

Alex Song, Samir Nasri, Cesc Fabregas, Jack Wilshere and Marouane Chamakh got the goals in a game that had been billed as Group H decider but turned out to be a cruise.

Shakhtar, who arrived on a run of seven straight wins, had endeavour early in each half but defensive frailties always undermined their ambition.

An omnipotent Arsenal plundered goals as and when they needed them. It was a pleasing night all-round.

Even Shakthar’s late consolation drew hearty applause. Eduardo half-volleyed home from close range and, as he had promised, did not celebrate the strike.

You could not have blamed him if he had, Shakhtar can take little else from this evening.

Arsenal have gathered nine points and 14 goals in their first three group games. They could secure top spot in Donetsk on November 3.

At this rate it is only a matter of time.

The main news pre-match was the return of Fabregas. The Arsenal captain had not been seen since injuring his hamstring in the act of scoring at Sunderland just over a month ago.

Wenger had spent last night mulling over the return of the Spanish midfielder. In the end, he decided against leaving him on the bench. However his inclusion left Abou Diaby among the substitutes.

Tomas Rosicky replaced Emmanuel Eboue numerically but actually played on the right. Samir Nasri took the Russian’s regular role on the left wing.

Before tonight, these two teams had taken six points out of six in Group H. And the first 15 minutes suggested both sides were facing higher standard opposition.

Shakhtar were as neat and tidy as their reputation had suggested. As a result, Arsenal lacked their usual incisiveness.

In fact they needed a bald-faced mistake to take the lead.

In the 18th minute, Nasri’s flashing cross was touched past the far post by the Shakhtar defence.

Chamakh nodded on the corner and, under little pressure, keeper Andriy Pyatov dropped a regulation catch. Johan Djourou stabbed the ball from under him and Song flicked the ball over the line.

Arsenal’s 1-0 lead had been not so much stolen as smuggled.

In the 25th minute, they nearly registered a much more authentic strike. Rosicky sand-wedged a ball to Chamakh, whose nod down was leathered goalwards by Nasri. This time Pyatov made the save.

Rosicky had a half-shout for a penalty soon afterwards. Had that been given and converted, Shakhtar might have been sunk. The Ukrainians seemed to lose their nerve after conceding the goal. Mentally they were there for the taking but Arsenal did not take charge.

Four minutes before the break Henrik Mkhitaryan’s deflected shot looped over the bar. It caused Lukasz Fabianski a worrying moment as did the subsequent corner. But given that is noteworthy, in reality, Donetsk were offering little.

And, a minute or so later, they were 2-0 down. Song exchanged passes with Emmanuel Eboue on the right and sent a deflected cross into the middle. Nasri cushioned the ball past Darijo Srna to create space for himself and then blasted home. It was his sixth goal of the season in only his ninth game.

Shakhtar made one change at the break but it was Douglas Costa and not the one for which the Arsenal fans were calling – Eduardo.

In the opening seconds, Mkhitaryan’s penetrative throughball released Luiz Adriano but Fabianski stood his ground to make a fine save.

There seemed to be more purpose about the visitors in the second half. And were just about to add to their firepower with Eduardo when Arsenal got their third.

Nasri curled over a free-kick from the right and Adriano tussled Djourou to the floor. Fabregas’ penalty was unstoppable – high and into the top corner. He then revealed a T-shirt wishing his mother a Happy Birthday.

The goal was the captain’s last meaningful touch. He was brought off for Denilson.

As the Brazilian waited to come on he shared a brief hug with Eduardo. The Croatian replaced Adriano seconds later and was greeted with rapturous applause.

It lightened the mood of the home supporters but did nothing for the lethal ambition of the team they were supporting. In the 66th minute, Wilshere raced onto Chamakh’s touch, exchanged passes with Rosicky and lifted his shot over the advancing Pyatov.

Shakhtar were now shell-shocked. They had been punished punitively this evening and it was not over yet.

In the 69th minute, Nasri scooped a pass over the visiting defence to the unmarked Chamakh. The Moroccan was so clear he could not believe he was onside but replays proved that was the case.

He gathered his senses – and the ball – before slotting home his sixth goal of the season.

Arsenal were now in party mood. Substitute Theo Walcott, seeing his first action since August 28, tried to arrow one in the top corner.

Eight minutes from time, Shakthar grabbed a goal.

Jadson hooked a high ball into the area from the right wing and Eduardo beat Fabianski from close range. It was a quality finish, the type that had first attracted Wenger's attention back in 2006.

He kept his word and did not celebrate the goal. The Arsenal fans repaid respect with respect.

The strike also threw up a notable question – was the first player to score at Emirates with three different clubs?

Costa tried a curler at the end. But the game had long since been lost.

Eduardo took time out to applaud the fans at the final whistle. Again, they responded in kind.

His smile suggested he was happy to be ‘home’ even though his new side had been swept aside on the night.

Also apparently 14 goals in 3 games is some kind of record.

Doesn't matter  To score 14 goals in 3 games and only concede two is fucking epic. As lenient as our group is no Arsenal fan was expecting to beat Braga 6-0 and Shakhtar 5-1. A win in Ukraine next round and we can play the kids for the last 2 games.

ALso for anyone else who watched the match, is anyone else as scared as I am at just how good Wilshere looks. He looks a better player at 18 than Cesc was at 18. It's just scary the way he has fitted in so seamlessly and has been our best player this season.

What I love about him is he works really hard, comes deep to collect the ball (just like Jesus does) and his first insticnt is to go forward.

Kid has a massive future ahead of him and I can't wait till we have him and Ramsey in the same midfield

ALso for anyone else who watched the match, is anyone else as scared as I am at just how good Wilshere looks. He looks a better player at 18 than Cesc was at 18. It's just scary the way he has fitted in so seamlessly and has been our best player this season.

yeah, and it was great for him to grab a goal this season after playing so well with out one to his name

Eduardo makes history with Emirates strike
Eduardo didn't just make an emotional return to Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night - he made history too.

The Croatian striker became the first man to score for THREE different clubs at Arsenal's 'new' home after netting Shakhtar Donetsk's late consolation in their 5-1 defeat.

Eduardo wrote his name into the history books on August 23, 2006 when he scored the first European goal at the Emirates, firing Dinamo Zagreb ahead in their qualifying tie against Arsène Wenger's side. Arsenal hit back through Freddie Ljungberg and Mathieu Flamini to win that game 2-1.

A year later Eduardo was an Arsenal player and scored in his first European appearance for the Club on home soil. The Croatian struck a minute from time as Arsenal beat Sparta Prague 3-0 to complete a 5-0 aggregate win in the qualifying round.

Eduardo went on to score three Champions League goals at the Emirates in an Arsenal shirt before leaving for Ukraine in July of this year.

He was back to make history on Tuesday - click on the PLAY box to the right to see how.

Are we wrong? Fill in the form below if you know of another player who has scored for three different clubs at Emirates Stadium.

Rosicky - We must be clinical at Man City

By Chris Harris

Tomas Rosicky accepts that Arsenal's title prospects will rise and fall on their ability to beat the cream of the Premier League.

A defeat at Chelsea before the international break knocked Arsène Wenger's team out of its stride and another major contender lies in their path on Sunday - Manchester City.

Rosicky scored on his comeback from injury at Eastlands last year but Arsenal lost the game 4-2 and have faltered against the top flight's elite in recent outings. They impressed at Stamford Bridge at the start of this month but came away empty-handed and Rosicky knows this has to stop.

"We need a win in Manchester," he said. "We cannot always say we are unlucky because it doesn’t work like that. It’s time to prove we can win those games.

"At Chelsea it was the same old story. We presented ourselves well on the pitch and we were very disappointed with the result because you go into the game with the feeling you can win it. But these are all just words and we have to finally show it on the pitch.

"We have a great opportunity to do that on Sunday. The win over Shakhtar was a good boost for us before City, so let’s go for it there."

Roberto Mancini's team lie second in the table, three points adrift of leaders Chelsea and two clear of Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham. City are scaling new heights in the Premier League and Rosicky is not surprised.

"If you have this [spending] power you can almost buy whoever you want, so I’m not surprised," he said.

"I don't know if they can stay there. They are a tough team if you see them play and they are tactically very good. Sometimes they are not so entertaining but they are a little bit similar to Chelsea. They play great in defence, they are very solid at the back so we need a good performance and we need to be clinical."

Have to agree. We showed against Shakhtar that we can be clinical, we just need to do it more consistently. A win against Man City would be massive we just need to put our chances away. We know we will have most of the possesion we just need to stop being so wasteful with it. Cesc being back and Rosicky possibly starting will help. Also how good has Nasri been so far, just excellent.

Also good to see Djourou in some decent form, doesn't look as rusty than when he came back.

Arsenal AGM was tonight, just concluded not long ago. Not much interesting really. Wenger did say that money is available for January if we need reinforcements.

The only real interesting point was that he said Vermaelen was a long term injury and he's not sure when he will be back. I think this will see us buy another CB in January and I think we will buy a keeper tbph.

Also he said that he will play a strong team against Newcastle next week in the League Cup, but didn't say whether Cesc will play.

Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen faces lengthy lay-off

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has admitted he does not know when Thomas Vermaelen will return from an injury that has proved to be worse than first thought.

The 24-year-old Belgian centre-back suffered an Achilles tendon problem while captaining his country against Turkey in Istanbul on 7 September.

"First we thought it would be a question of days, now it looks to be long," said Wenger.

"At the moment I cannot say exactly when he will play again."

Vermaelen missed the closing weeks of last season because of a calf injury but was fit for the start of the current campaign and last played for Arsenal against Blackburn on 28 August.

The Gunners have also been hit by injuries to Robin van Persie, Aaron Ramsey, Bacary Sagna, Laurent Koscielny, Manuel Almunia and Emmanuel Frimpong, while captain Cesc Fabregas has only just returned to action.

"We have been hit hard by injuries, I concede that," stated Wenger. "On that front we have very competent medical staff and we analyse and check every training method we can.

"The long-term injuries we have had have mainly been from bad tackles and injuries that happened with national teams, when the players were away.

"Vermaelen is a case of a player who had nothing, went to play for Belgium, came back - Achilles tendon."

Sagna returns for Manchester City trip

By Richard Clarke

Bacary Sagna is back for the trip to Manchester City on Sunday.

The right back has been missing since injuring his thigh at Chelsea on October 3 but is fit for the weekend.

Laurent Koscielny (back) has a minimal chance of being included but Manuel Almunia (elbow) is still definitely out.

Elsewhere, Robin van Persie (ankle) and Aaron Ramsey (leg) will not be seen until November. The same is true for Thomas Vermaelen. Wenger admitted concern about the centre back’s on-going Achilles injury but brushed aside suggestions it was a long-term problem.

“For the weekend, we could have Sagna available,” he said. “That is basically it. Sagna will come back, all the others will be out.

“Manuel Almunia is very, very close but he is not yet completely confident on the stretch of his arm. He must be able to go with force into contact and he still has some pain there.

“Koscielny has a 20 per cent chance to be available.

“Vermaelen is ruled out for the weekend. He will still need two or three weeks. His injury is not a long-term concern but at the start we thought it was a question of days and now it is six weeks.

“You can’t say it is not a concern at all. We are a bit concerned but he has had a final treatment that we think could kill it.”

From home in the Cotswolds to a marketplace in Azerbaijan... the extraordinary story of England legend Tony Adams

The journey to meet Tony Adams is long, uncomfortable and increasingly bizarre. Six hours in the air are followed by a 140-mile ride in a rusting Lada taxi with no seatbelts, no discernible suspension and, most worryingly of all, no obvious brakes.

Goran, the driver, keeps his foot buried in the accelerator, overtaking trucks on blind bends as the road snakes an ever more perilous path towards the Caucasus Mountains.

Finally, three frighteningly long hours after leaving Baku, the oil-rich city on the Caspian Sea that is the capital of Azerbaijan, the taxi arrives at Gabala FC, the new and utterly improbable home of one of the greatest central defenders in the history of Arsenal and England.

Adams has gambled on moving here from his beautiful house in the Cotswolds in a bid to reconstruct his managerial career at a smalltown club in a small-time league in an area that is beyond the back of beyond.

He has accepted weeks of separation from his wife, Poppy, a member of the Teacher whisky dynasty, their three young children, six-year-old Atticus, Hector, four, and eight-month-old Iris, and his two teenage children, Oliver and Amber, from his first marriage.

He last saw his wife a fortnight ago when they met in Baku to investigate the city's International School, where they have enrolled their sons to start next September. Next weekend, Poppy and four of the children will be in Gabala to stay with Adams for a week.

Last Sunday, he spent his 44th birthday talking to his family on Skype from his whitewashed villa in the grounds of a near-deserted five-star hotel, owned by the parent company of the football club. He also celebrated the occasion in the company of some of his small group of English staff, with a locally made cake and a glass of chai, spiced tea with lemon. Adams, the recovering alcoholic, has not touched a drink for 14 years.

'I don't miss England but, of course, I miss my family,' he says. 'But I am here to build a club from top to bottom, and I am the boss, I am the man. And when I discussed this job with Poppy, she said to me: "If there's one person who can survive on his own, it's you. You're going to love this." I can cope because I am here concentrating on football.'

He goes to bed by 10pm each evening, after reading a chapter from Simon Schama's book, The History Of Britain, a gift from his wife, or watching a DVD of the American television comedy, Entourage. Each night he also writes in a diary.

'I have never minded being alone,' he admits.

While there are no formal meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous in Azerbaijan, he has made contact with expats of similar needs in Baku.

'We talk or have coffee,' he says.

'There are only a few of us but, after all, the first meeting of AA was just between two alcoholics,' he says. 'We live one day at a time, but I am 14 years sober and draw strength from that.'

After three months under Adams, Gabala FC lie in mid-table in the Azerbaijan Premier League, ranked a lowly 38th in importance in Europe.

Although admission is free, Gabala draw crowds of fewer than 1,000 spectators from a region with a population of 90,000. In his heyday, Adams played every week to crowds of 50,000-plus.

He is here because he felt he had been left with no choice but to accept a job in a country where coming third in the Eurovision Song Contest last year was hailed a landmark accomplishment.

After being sacked by Portsmouth in February 2009, he had been hardly inundated with offers of a job. When football talks about the search for an Englishman to manage England, Adams is rarely mentioned.

'An element of people at home just think of me as a nice guy with a fantastic playing career, who set up a worthwhile charity, my Sporting Chance clinic, to treat those with addictions to alcohol, gambling or drugs,' he explains. 'Do they see me as a football club manager? I'm not so sure. The reality is that when people like me get an opportunity to manage, they are judged absurdly quickly. Did you know that 25 managers have lost their jobs in England since I agreed to come here in April?'

Adams, capped 66 times by England, lasted exactly a year in his first managerial job at Wycombe. He resigned on November 5, 2004, because he felt his role had become compromised under new owners.

Yet Tale Heydarov, a young and extremely wealthy Azeri businessman - known to Princes William and Harry after being introduced to them last year at the Beaufort Polo Club in Gloucestershire - has brought Adams to this outpost to build a club that will one day be capable of representing Azerbaijan in European football alongside such giants as Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Barcelona and AC Milan.

By 2012, Heydarov, the son of the country's hugely influential Emergencies Minister, Kamaladdin Heydarov, a man said to be worth billions, has promised Adams he will have a new 13,000-seat stadium - complete with a hotel and conference centre - and a football academy at his disposal with an array of training pitches to rival anything Roman Abramovich has bankrolled for Chelsea. Three grass pitches have been sown by a company, SIS, who have just completed work for Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.

For now, though, Adams takes training in a little ground with plastic seats and high wire fencing that is approached down an unmade road. His players change in a dressing room in what looks like a disused hangar. He has commandeered a couple of large blue plastic barrels to act as ice baths and installed modern gym equipment. Yet even with this basic upgrade it is hard to imagine the club being part of European football.

Adams, though, is passionate in his belief that Heydarov will deliver on his pledge.

'I admit to having had a couple of emergency meetings with him,' says Adams. 'When I came to take training for the first time, I was given four bibs. All the balls were flat. So, I booted them over a fence and told them to bring them back only when they had been blown up.'

Adams recalls his trepidation when he arrived at Gabala.

'I looked around and wondered: "Does anyone know what we're doing here, or where we're going?" Obviously, everyone is scared to death of me and thinking: "Who is he, what's he going to do? Are we doing it right?" Last year, at a hotel in town where most of the players live, they had 14 suffering from a temperature of 100 degrees or more. The place was disgusting and I put my assistant, Gary Stevens, in charge of getting it changed.

'We have had the toilets cleaned, improved the sanitation, put in electric hand-dryers; basic stuff. We've thrown out the old, smelly carpets, curtains and furniture and gone through the place with disinfectant.

'Now the food is fantastic. I have breakfast and lunch there as as it's where my office is. Things generally happen at the last minute here. I have a lot of patience but, now and again, I need to be reminded that it's all going to plan.

'When I asked to meet Mr Tale at his offices in Baku, I just wanted him to look me in the eye and confirm that we all want the same things. It's been a really hard three months, but that's OK, I'm loving it.

'He wants to do this for the Azeris, to give something back to his people, and I'm honoured that he's chosen me to build a football club for him. I will put a decent team on the pitch for him, and if we haven't won the championship here during my three-year contract, he won't have to sack me: I will walk away.'

His squad have been assembled for a total wage bill of $1.5million.

'You could probably get Thierry Henry to play at least a couple of games for that!' says Adams, laughing.

Two players have been drafted in from England; Deon Burton, a Jamaican most recently of Charlton, and Terry Cooke, who wandered through the English game, then played in the United States before arriving here from North Queensland Fury in Australia.

Under the regulations of the league, three Azeris have to be on the pitch at all times, so his squad is built around home-grown players, but he also has an Argentine, Cristian Torres, two Brazilians and a Frenchman.

Adams speaks French and his assistant, Ramiz Kerimoz, 29 and a retired goalkeeper, translates team-talks into Azeri.

'A lot of the team are Muslims and they pray before games,' says Adams.

In training, he communicates through sign language and a whistle. He raises three fingers to show the maximum touches a player is allowed in a practice game.

'At Arsenal, they can cope with one or two-touch, but these players need two touches to control the ball,' he explains. 'I have already played 22 players, as I want to give them all a chance before I make plans for next season. I keep things as simple as I can; we always have the same set-plays, but then that's what Bobby Robson did all his career.'

Adams has turned on the hairdryer, Sir Alex Ferguson-style, just once.

'Some were chancing their arm, not applying themselves. I was so angry they didn't need a translator,' he says.

On most days he leaves for work at 8.15am. Occasionally, he ventures into the centre of town, visiting the market and bazaar.

'We call it the King's Road,' says Adams. 'Poppy's been down here and bought a couple of bikes for the boys. She also likes to get the fruit and veg from the market. The quality is fantastic.'

When he is alone, he eats with Stevens and other staff in the hotel's restaurant. Kebabs, pizza and pasta form his staple diet. Adams is hardly an ounce heavier than in his triumphant days at Arsenal, where Arsene Wenger taught him how to live and behave soberly after years of drunken excess.

He lifted nine trophies, more than any other captain of the Gunners (four championships, three FA Cups, the European Cup-winners' Cup and the League Cup), yet as he strolled through Gabala's market stalls people looked at him out of curiosity because of his height - at 6ft 3in he stands out - and complexion, not admiration for his success.

'No one recognises me, I've got my anonymity back and it's marvellous,' he says.

He is 3,000 miles from home but claims to have no regrets at being so far removed from the mainstream of the English game. An annual salary approaching £1m after tax was not, he insists, at the heart of his decision to be here.

'There has to be some compensation to come this far from home and for my family to meet such a big challenge,' he says. 'But the money was secondary.

'I was blown away by the vision of Mr Heydarov. He is the real deal. Alex Ferguson said to me: "Don't pick your club, pick your chairman." That's what I've done here. Mr Heydarov is very sincere and a very smart cookie.'

Arsenal set to win work permit for Wellington

Arsenal are set to win a ‘Special Talent’ work visa for Brazilian forward Wellington Silva. It means the youngster will be available to join up with The Gunners from the 6th of January 2011.

Silva is currently preparing to fly to London for the third and final part of an adaptation period; a program set up by the club to make the transition from life in Brazil to England easier. Wellington leaves parent side Fluminense in frustrating circumstances with coach Muricy Ramalho freezing him out of first-team action.

Yet the end to his current nightmare is in sight. Silva is poised to be granted a special talent visa; a loophole allowing exceptional talent to move countries when they wouldn’t normally qualify for a work permit under conventional rules. Arsenal have previously exploited the rule, bringing both Alexandre Song and Denilson in via the same route.

The completion of the transfer in January will see Arsenal hand over the final payment of £850,000 for the remaining 25% of Silva’s ownership. It means the full transfer will have cost the club around £3.4 million.

Mbodj confirms Arsenal interest

Norwegian Tippeligaen outfit Tromsø I.L have confirmed Arsenal’s interest in their midfield prospect Kara Mbodj, while agent Jim Solbakken admits he is exploring ‘new challenges’ for his client.

Young Guns broke the story of Arsenal’s interest in Mbodj in July, and also confirmed that representatives would be at last night’s clash with Molde. Kara impressed in the 1-0 defeat and after admitted he was aware that The Gunners were there to watch him.

“I know that Arsenal were here, but I try to shut that out in a game situation. I do not know what it is yet, but it is possible I will be in conversation afterwards.”

Sports Director Morten Kræmer later told VG.com he refused to allow any talks with the player but confessed he knew negotiations with interested clubs had already gone on with agents. Scouts from Hamburg and Genk were also present.

“There were several clubs here today, they have been here to see a match. There will be no meetings. There is no problem for us, they’re welcome to make checks. Kara can talk with his own agents and advisers. We have nothing to do with just that.”

Mbodj has been a revelation in the Norwegian league this term, turning in several dominate and powerful displays in central midfield. At home at centre back or in a holding role, Arsenal are thought to want to pay around £3 million, although The Daily Mail says a bid of £28 million will be lodged in January.

The key to any deal swinging in Arsenal’s favour lays with agent Jim Solbakken. He has close links with Arsène Wenger and currently represents Håvard Nordtveit and Sean McDermott. He opened the door for a potential move last week;

“We are looking for new challenges for Kara. But there is no hurry. Kara is doing well at Tromsø.”

Steve Rowley is expected to make further checks on Mbodj before January.

Preview: Man City vs Arsenal

By Richard Clarke

In football, reputations can be hard to shake.

Over the past 14 years, Arsène Wenger’s Arsenal have been labelled with many terms – good and bad. You can pretty much take your pick from a rainbow of colourful tabloid terms – from fluent to fragile, irresistible to ill-disciplined.

But there is one description that the Frenchman will not accept anymore.

Soft.

Arsenal head to Manchester City on Sunday for a game that has massive implications for their season.

By May it seems likely that Roberto Mancini’s big-spending side will have formally taken Liverpool’s seat at the Big Four table. The sky blue side now have sky-high expectations and the hype surrounding them is following the same trajectory.

But then Sunday is seismic for Arsenal now. Having played so well for no reward at Chelsea last month, Wenger requires the performance AND the points at Eastlands.

Otherwise you may hear them, albeit prematurely, labelled ‘also-rans’ on Monday.

While the defeat at Stamford Bridge was a crushing disappointment in certain respects, for the manager at least, it did have significant benefits. Like nailing that ‘soft’ reputation for good.

“I still get this criticism a lot,” he said. “But I feel we have matured. Yes we lost the game at Chelsea but I never felt that was because we were too soft. I never felt we were dominated physically.

“On the day they scored two exception goals but overall we had as many chances and as much of the game as they had. We are close to really showing our special quality. But we have to transfer that into a big title game.

“I feel we are a much more competitive side now. At 18 or 19 years of age - unless you have exceptions - you do not have the same body build and experience. You can be impressed upon a bit more at 18 than 22 or 23 because you are a man at 23.

“So we are not anymore what I could sometimes see - a soft team. That’s finished.”

There may be only one place between Manchester City and Arsenal right now but the contrasts are stark. They are arguably the two most financially secure clubs in the top flight but have achieved that status by vastly different means.

Meanwhile the distinction in playing styles is best illustrated by the following stat. Arsenal have had 121 goal attempts this season in the Premier League, the highest in the division. Manchester City may have acquired an array of costly forwards but they have mustered only 70 – the fourth lowest tally.

If we are sticking with labels then Arsenal are “cavalier” and City are “cagey”.

However, importantly, Wenger rejects the notion that Mancini’s midfield heavily favours destruction over construction.

“I expect them to play De Jong, Barry and Yaya Toure,” he said. “They are three midfielders who can both defend and attack. Even Yaya Toure is as well a creative player, he is not only defensive.”

Bacary Sagna returns for Arsenal following a thigh injury but, as expected, Laurent Koscielny (back) will not figure. Jack Wilshere starts his three-game suspension but Cesc Fabregas is available and working his way back to full sharpness after a month out. Significantly the Spaniard was not present at Stamford Bridge.

Right now, Arsenal need a big win.

They were beaten home and away by both Manchester United and Chelsea last season while Manchester City might have done the same thing if Mancini had shown more ambition at Emirates Stadium late in the campaign.

The Frenchman is right to draw positives from the Stamford Bridge game but a defeat is still a defeat. No-one wants to be a gallant loser for long.

Between 1996 and 2006 Arsenal won seven straight League games at Manchester City but the home side have since won three out of four – including an explosive 4-2 early last season.

“The big games are always decided by the first goal,” remembered Wenger. “In that match Manchester City scored the first goal and then they took advantage.

“But in the big games you have to do first what you do normally. You always feel you are under special pressure to perform exceptionally but it is a matter of just focussing on doing well what you know you can do. We have to relax and play our game.

“For me, overall Manchester City are a side in the same level as Manchester United.

“But I am convinced that we convinced people we can stay in this title race with our game at Chelsea. What we want to do is transform a good performance into a positive result.

“Let’s just turn up with the same attitude and the same performance again and I’m sure we will not always be unlucky.”

‘Unfortunate’. Now that would be surely the worst reputation of all.

But in the end, it is down to Arsenal to make a name for themselves on Sunday.
