Quote: Gervinho agrees deal to join Arsenal Arsenal Football Club announces that Ivory Coast international forward Gervinho will shortly join the Gunners, subject to a regulatory process. Gervinho, 24, will arrive at Arsenal from French side Lille, who he helped to a Ligue 1 and Coupe de France double last season with 15 goals in 40 games. The campaign capped a very successful two years for Gervinho, during which time he netted 28 times in his 67 appearances for Les Gogues. Before joining Lille, Gervinho enjoyed two seasons with Le Mans, also in Ligue 1. On the international stage, Gervinho captained the Ivory Coast in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and also represented his country at the 2010 World Cup, scoring twice in just three substitute appearances during qualification to the finals. To date, Gervinho has made 27 appearances in total for Les Eléphants, scoring six goals. The forward came through the same Ivorian youth academy - ASEC Mimosas - as Emmanuel Eboue, before following in the right-back’s footsteps to join Belgian side KSK Beveren. http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/gervinho-agrees-deal-to-join-arsenal What's that, we made a signing.

I think if we move for Cahill it will be on deadline day, Bolton need the money and wont want him to leave on Bosman next year and I dont think they be holding out for his full buyout clause on the last day. Arsenal boss Wenger sold Gael Clichy to Manchester City for £7m and has scouted Leighton Baines and Jose Enrique as replacements in the past.
But Wenger's priorities lie elsewhere as he wants a centre half and to strengthen his midfield with Gary Cahill and Juan Mata top of his list.
That means Wenger will look to Kieran Gibbs, Armand Traore and, most interestingly, Vermaelen - as revealed in Mirror Sport - next season. http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/transfer-news/Transfer-news-Arsenal-say-Thomas-Vermaelen-could-play-left-back-and-Gunners-won-t-sign-Gael-Clichy-replacement-as-they-target-Gary-Cahill-and-Juan-Mata-article764434.html#ixzz1RqoDNc1N

Was afraid it would happen but confident Gibbs will step up. People will say he's not ready, but that's what people said when Cole took over from Sylvinho and when Clichy took over from Cole. Won't know until he's given the chance.
As for Vermaelen at LB he is only a last ditch option, and in any case would make for an excellent defensive LB.

Not confident in Gibbs at all. Dude might be technically ready, a few solid run outs should prepare him better, but you look at him the wrong way and he injures himself for a few weeks or months. If we got Cahill then Vermaelen at LB could work, but having said that, Verminator's the best CB we got with Djourrou in second. Him at LB is not ideal at all and leaves us super exposed if we get an injury or 2, which will happen at some point. Traore, well unless he's improved ten fold and miraculously learnt how to defend is gonna be completely useless.
I think not signing an LB is a biiiig mistake just like not signing a Defensive mid for the past few seasons has been.

TBF this injury problems only really happenbed badly last season. I'm confident given the chance he can step up.
Whichever CB we buy will be first choice with Vermaelen.
People also forget that in a pinch Djourou is also an option at DM. The other thing is with our formation, a DM isn't 100% necessary with the pivot CM's we play.

Why wouldn't you play a DM when you have Song and Djorou? Unless you classify song as CM

imnofreak wrote:Why wouldn't you play a DM when you have Song and Djorou? Unless you classify song as CM The thing is we don't actually play with a DM, more just 2 CM's that pivot in Jack and Song. So it's not really a huge deal that we don't have many DM's, and with Gervinho coming in it will actually allow for more rotation than we could usually have in midfield.

Edited by gooner4life_8: 12/7/2011 10:10:55 PM Yeah this. My point with Gervinho is that he can play on the left, and Nasri can move to Cesc's position and Cesc back into the midfield to give Song or Wilshere a rest. That's something we couldn't do last season with Denilson our next option, and Diaby being continually injured. Gervinho will also help with the eventual development of Theo moving into the centre which is where he will end up.

 imagine Theo in CM he'd get killed
But yeah he was always gonna end up moving to the middle because on the wing all he has is his pace, his final delivery is horrible 99% of the time, but his finishing, as we saw this season, is much much better.

Starting XI for the Malaysia game, Szczesny, Jenkinson, Gibbs, Koscielny, Vermaelen (c) Wilshere, Song, Ramsey, Miyaichi, Walcott, Chamakh
Very interested to see how Ryo and Jenkinson go.

2-0 no. Theo with an excellent lob over the keeper, from a sublime through ball by Rambo, who's been great so far as have Jenkinson and Vermaelen.
HT: 2-0. Good half overall, Rambo and Jack, well you wouldn't know it's pre-season going by their performances.
Watching Vermaelen, you see just how much we missed him last season. theo is as dangerous as ever.
Miyachi is just a bundle of energy and just fucking ridiulously quick, I'm talking Theo quick. He looks really dangerous on the left.
Jenkinson has been soliud thus far, 2 footed and very tall for a full back. Has been caught out a few times by balls over the top but has had the pace to recover.
Chamakh is the only dissapointment so far, just looks really off the pace so far.

FT 4-0. Goals to Ramsey (pen), Walcott, Vela, Rosicky.
Vela scored with, you guessed it, a chip, after a great through ball by Rosicky, who then followed up with the th just before full time after Andrei beat his man to the byline and put in a deflected cross for Rosicky to head in before the keeper got it.
Pverall good performance, bit sketchy in the 2nd half because of how many changes we made and players tiring, but just good to see Arsenal again. Now for Hangzhou Greentown on Saturday night.

I thought Vela looked pretty good, except for the fact he has NO right foot, he could have easily had a second half hatrick. Ryo looked good for a young lad making his debut as did Jenkinson.
It will be weird watching Adam Griffiths playing against Arsenal

Also  at Denilson. If you needed any proof that he's not in anyway in Arsene's plans last night was it. Comes on at HT, goes off again after 20 mins and stomped straight down the tunnel

Also interesting to note that in Forbes list of the world most valuable sports teams, we're the 3rd most valuable football team in 7th place overall, behind Real Madrid in 5th and United in first.

Quote: Wenger pays tribute to 'exceptional' Vieira By Chris Harris Arsène Wenger has paid tribute to Patrick Vieira after the Arsenal legend called time on his playing career. Vieira has retired at the age of 35 and taken up a new position as Football Development Executive at his final club, Manchester City. But he will of course be remembered for his exploits at Highbury after making 406 appearances and winning seven major trophies in a nine-year spell at Highbury. The Frenchman captained Arsenal to an unbeaten Premier League campaign in 2003/04 and his former manager appreciates what he brought to the Club. "You can only have lot of respect for what Patrick has achieved," said Wenger. "His career is sensational. He was an exceptional player for us. "We have classy players in midfield now but Patrick was special. He was a tall player with good technique. "You do not compare [old players with new players]. We have exceptional players in midfield with their own character. But at Arsenal we will be forever grateful for Patrick’s contribution." http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-hails-exceptional-vieira So sad to see him retire. Absolute legend and will always be loved at the club no matter what. One of our greatest and it will never be forgotten what he gave to the club. Arsene's first, and in my opinion, greatest signing.

Good news everyone. Denilson is gone, albeit on loan, but I don't think we will see him in an Arsenal shirt again, thank God for that.
Apparently he's off to Sao Paulo on loan and will be presented there next week.
