I think it's more a case of not wanting to since by all reports he was on about 80-90k a week. Nah it was around 70k per week. That's 3.6 million pounds a year for one player! No player should get that much, it's bloody ridiculous and I for one am glad Arsenal refuse to pay that kind of money for players.

My short assessment on our collective summer signings on what was a long last 10 hours sitting in front of BBC football transfer updates on deadline day.
Arteta is a good buy, albeit has had his fair share of injury problems lately. If we can get him fully fit, which he seems like getting to, I think he is a fantastic signing. He'll slot right into our system and play as our CAM. He sort of softens the blow of losing Cesc. Quality player
Benayoun is a handy pick up! He can play on either wing but obviously best utilised in a central attacking role. I think he can be our 'Nasri' for the year :P
Santos and Mertesacker are 2 signings out of necessity. Per is a great one, what he lacks in pace he makes up for in reading the game, and he has a very good top speed. I am rapped with that him.
Santos I don't know too much about to be honest. I've seen him play 2 international matches for Brazil and he seems to be their regular left back. I hope he can adapt to the rigours and his defensive duties in the Premiership, cause I know he's a decent attacking weapon otherwise. Any Brazilian regular is a handy addition. he also softens the Clichy blow
Park is a move I didn't expect but I am happy with. He is actually a very strong and athletic forward, I think he can be utilised nicely. A handy addition to the squad.
Gervinho, Campbell and Chamberlain are classic Wenger additions. Let's hope he can make stars of them. Obviously Gervinho more experienced than the latter 2, so I expect more maturity from him after he returns from suspension. He can do a bit for us on that left wing.
Campbell and Chamberlain are 2 for the future.
I still feel like we could have done with some more defensive reinforcements. But I guess I can't ask for too much more, as Wenger finally delivered to the cries of the fans. Now for any of the doubters who were out there, they will get off his back, and hopefully we can just play some Arsenal football now.
Bring it on I say

As for more defensive reinforcements, don't be surprised to see Arsene make a move for Cahill again in January.
Also been confirmed that Arteta will take #8 and Benayoun #30.

Quote: Andre Santos - The first interview Andre Santos joined Arsenal on Wednesday and he sat down with Arsenal Player to give his reaction to the move. The Brazilian international full-back, who becomes Arsène Wenger’s sixth acquisition of the summer, put pen to paper on a long-term contract after his transfer from Turkish giants Fenerbahce. After completing the deal, Santos spoke exclusively about what attracted him to Arsenal, following in the footsteps of Brazilians like Gilberto, Edu, Silvinho and Denilson, adapting to English football and more. “I am delighted to have signed for Arsenal,” he said. “It was one of my dreams to play for a major European football club and I have accomplished this. I am very happy to be part of this team. “All the Brazilians who came to this club spoke wonders about it and I am delighted to be part of the Arsenal family. “It is always a tricky business when you arrive at a new club. There are great expectations from the supporters and I hope that my way of working, of playing, will win the hearts and minds of the other players, the supporters and all those who work for Arsenal. “This is my main goal at the Club - I managed to win over the supporters at Fenerbahce and I hope the same will happen here. “I arrive here with one aim - being a champion. I will wear Arsenal’s shirt and give my utmost to it. I will do everything for the Club.” http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/player-andre-santos-the-first-interview Am actually really looking forward to seeing him. Won't have to much trouble adapting with us, with him being an attacking left back our style will actually help ease him in more so than at a lot of other clubs.

Quote: Arteta admits to lure of Champions League New signing Mikel Arteta says the opportunity to play in the Champions League was a key factor behind his decision to join Arsenal. The Spanish midfielder signed a four-year contract with the Club on Wednesday after completing his move from Everton to become Arsène Wenger’s final acquisition of the summer. Arteta spent five successful years in the Premier League at Goodison Park but admits the lure of Europe’s elite club competition was too strong. "It is a big opportunity for me and my family and I think it is the right time for me to take it,” he told Everton’s official website. "It is a big challenge, a different challenge, fresh for me and I want to see myself on the biggest stage, the Champions League. "I am 29 years old so I haven't got much time left to take a chance like this one. I think I have done my best for Everton." http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/arteta-admits-to-lure-of-champions-league Him along with Per are our best signing of the window I think. The advantage with Mikel is that he can play in the Cesc role, but can also play deeper in the midfield as well.

Aswell, if you look at it from another point of view, at Everton he was a Marquee player probably their best paid. They treated him especially well as he did his utmost for them in return. Coming to Arsenal, he joins knowing full well the kind of football we play and our history. I think he knew once he heard the interest, that Arsenal wouldn't come knocking with 100k a week, rather, we come with Champions League football, the need for a starting attacking midfielder who can keep us on a world class level, and the opportunity to play at a club who's philosophy he would thrive under (not that Everton don't play decent football either). I think, at the end of the day, we just don't pay ridiculous wages (as compared to with the other heavy hitters) because financially, we are a stable club who work within the realms of social and economic 'insert whatever word I'm thinking of here'.

The new name for our new CB pairing. No longer shall they be known as Vermaelen and Mertesacker, from this day forward they shall be known as ""VERMERTESAMAECKERLEN""

Oh, and if anyone needed some clarification on how tall Per Mertesacker is, here is an easy to understand chart detailing the height of our new German friend.

Just for more clarification on his height, here is Mertesacker next to fellow Arsenal giant Andrei Arshavin.

Quote:Benayoun is a handy pick up! He can play on either wing but obviously best utilised in a central attacking role. I think he can be our 'Nasri' for the year I dunno if I agree with that. He was better coming in off the left hand side for us. He's definitely not a 90 minute player and I doubt you'll use him as such. He definitely fits in with your 'walk the ball into the net' mentality. Typical Yossi run: Picks it up on the left... cuts inside one.... inside another.... gets it out of his feet for the shot!... but beats another instead... and trys to beat another... and loses the ball

He'll be very handy off the bench which is where he will be played mostly, although he could start against Swansea.

Quote:“I arrive here with one aim - being a champion. I will wear Arsenal’s shirt and give my utmost to it. I will do everything for the Club.” This line is exactly the type of stuff that the team need to be thinking about all the time. I'm liking his attitude and he won't go wrong if he sticks to those principles

That just proves my point even more.
Wait, what was my point again? :P
It's just the generic thing to say, I wouldn't read into it.

 It is generic but it's at least the right attitude to show, I think so at least.
As for Benayoun getting around, people seem to only be mentioning Liverpool, Chelsea and now Arsenal without mentioning he was also at West Ham before that
I also hate how people are calling him a crock after one unfortunate season of injury, and that's a reason we shouldn't be getting him. If that's the case Vermaelen is a crock and we shouldn't have him

Frimpong v. 1. to fuck about with the ball like a petulant child and get a yellow card 2. to fly in with raised studs and get a second yellow 3. to lose your team the game because of the gaping hole you leave because you're not smart enough to realise that your ball skills in midfield have been the only redeeming feature of your side "Frimpong totally Frimponged us today. What the fuck is the point in him if he's just going to get sent off?" 4. to display a level of intelligence about when and where to commit fouls that puts Isthmian League players 700 levels above you 5. to be made to look like Mr. T "I got Frimponged today." "What a cunt that barber was. Shall I have a word?"
