good side but would prefer to see arshavin or benayoun over rosicky. Jenkinson needs experience. In some games he's looked alright, especialy against udinese. With sagna out for 3 months he'll play a lot more, and with every game i guarantee he will become better. Wenger is one of the best if not the best talent scouts in the world so we must trust his judgment no matter what we think of him.

Happy to get the 3 points in the end.
Brilliant start, crap end to the first half and a decent 2nd half where we created enough opportunities to wrap it up. I did like how we handled the last 5 or so minutes, kept possesion very well.
All 3 subs were excellent, especially Arshavin who brought some real energy. Also showed that he's worth trying in the Cesc role. Santos was very good defensively, and also good going forward. Thought Mertesacker and Koscielny were very good with Mertesacker having his best game in an Arsenal shirt.
Arteta was a bit below par but was good at the end when we needed to keep posession. song was excellent once again and was everywhere. Rosicky didn't have a great first half but was excellent in the 2nd. Gervinho was good in the first 20 odd minutes but like Theo and RvP, he went missing once Sunderland got more into the game.
MOTM by far and away was Robin van Persie. Just fucking outstanding. Such a captains performance. Great finish for the first goal, should've had a brilliant second, and of course the winner. If we do one good thing this season, it has to be to make RvP sign a new deal.

Also worth mentioning that apart from the one big mistake in the first half Jenkinson, I thought, was very good.

Three points is three points. Good result and a sold performance I'd say. Our defence was strong but in reality it was never going to be tested by Sunderland 'can't score without darren bent'. They have nothing going forwards. Robin Van Persie!

Some interesting stats from the game.
Mertesacker was flawless in defence. 100% tackle success rate(OK he only made 1 tackle ), 3 interceptions, 4 attempted clearances all successful, 3 headed clearances all successful and won both aerial duels he contested.
That's ontop of 58 completed passes at a success rate of 91%.
Arteta completed the most passes(66) at 90%
Arshavin came on, attempted 12 passes, and completed 12 passes.

Just got back from the game, pretty damn happy.
Sydcro, pretty much agree with everything you said. Especially Arshavin, havnt seen him like that for a long time. I think he needs to be given a chance to play centrally. Right from kick off RVP seemed bang up for it today, maybe just wanting to show his commitment to the club aftr all the recent speculation. Was really good to see either way. Song was outstanding all day. looked to be pretty lucky not to get a second yellow near the end though, what did it look like on tv? I thought it looked pretty much the same as the yellow he did get. I thought Gervinho and Theo were pretty average. Still not sold on Jenkinson quite yet, I think he's ok going forward but seems a bit nervous for my liking. Maybe he just needs a few more games after been thrown in the deep end and I'm sure he'll get that with Sagna out.

Because in the summer he will be in the last year of his contract and he hasn't signed one yet, the media straight away comes up with some outlandish story that City are looking at him as a Tevez replacement. Basically what they've done is spoken to someone connected with City about Robin, that person has said they'd love him at City and the media writes it up as City after Van Persie  Then they tried the old favourite that he's sold his house and that must mean he's moving. I mean nevermind that he sold his house last year and has already moved into a new one

Not a convincing win by any means... lucky not to go behind and just be thankful for RvP. Yeah I got it. Not convinincing scoreboard wise, but in all other areas it was fairly convincing. The 2nd half was fairly straight forward. I mean Sunderland had only 3 shots on goal, none on target, one went wide and the other 2 blocked in that 2nd half. It's only because we couldn't quite get that 2nd goal a bit earlier that it looked like we struggled, when in reality we were never really threatened. It was actually really annoying, cause I'm sitting there shitting bricks in the 2nd half everytime Sunderland get over half way, and then look after the match and see all that stress wasn't worth it since they created nothing  Edited by sydneycroatia58: 17/10/2011 12:54:19 PM

This will be the first time I'd have mentioned this point on here, but I've been aggravated and annoyed at it for the past 2 seasons and most matches played.
The one tactic that I see our lads employing that totally doesn't fit into our style and ends up breaking down too many raids, is the cross from dud areas to no-one in particular. It happens far too often and regularly, at times with no one to hit, and the ball goes uncontested because we either do not have the numbers, the players capable or the quality to pick the man. Every match, it is so evident that our attacking players do not make lung-busting runs to get on the end of a cross, it is so obvious we don't get numbers into the box to try and compete whilst making an attacking raid, it is so blatant our style of play is built around playing the ball on the ground with the players stengths, or rather weaknesses being in the air.
How many crosses can you remember in the last, say 200 times we've delivered the ball in general play, have found the head of Van Persie, or has been in a generally threatening area for another of our attacking players who have not contested it to their best ability. We waste far too many good possessions, sustained pressure, good movement, for this utterly useless and uneventful cross. I don't know why Wenger lets this happen.
Now I'm not going to go and single out particular players who are serial offenders, but I will throw this series of questions out there.
Who else thinks we overplay this tactic? Who is tired of the tactic? Should we look to change, or perhaps reduce the amount of times we cross the ball? Do we need players of greater aerial ability in our team to cater to the underlying implementation of said tactic because Wenger obviously deems it necessary enough to keep barraging opponents with the ball game in, game out? Is it a case of merely keeping the opposition honest, or are we just incapable of picking out enough good runs, with good deliveries and passes along the deck?

Arshavin showed enough last night to suggest he is worth a try in the hole behind Robin.
Theo is a tough one, he was poor for most of the match last night, but showed some really good stuff in the last 15 or so minutes. I still think he would be best utilised either upfront, or on the left cutting in. He is not a winger. It's just unfortunate that we only play one upfront so he won't get a go, but would like to see him on the left some more, he looked good there last night.
Part of me would like to see Ox given more of a go, and I think he will against Marseille this week.

Quote: Vermaelen signs new long-term contract Arsenal Football Club is delighted to announce that Thomas Vermaelen has signed a new long-term contract with the Club. The Belgium international has been a star performer in Arsenal’s defence during his 54 appearances for the Club and has now put pen to paper on a new contract. Vermaelen, 25, made more appearances than any other Gunners player during his debut season, being named in the PFA Premier League Team of the Season for 2009/10. During that campaign, his defensive performances were just part of the story. He also weighed in with eight goals, including thunderous long-range efforts against Blackburn Rovers and Wigan Athletic. Captain of the Belgium national side Vermaelen has made 32 appearances for his country including the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Vermaelen previously skippered Dutch giants Ajax, where he spent nine years, having joined as a teenager from Belgian club Germinal Beerschot. Arsène Wenger said: “We are absolutely delighted that Thomas has signed a new long-term contract. Our plan is always to sign top quality players and with Thomas extending his contract, we have done just that. Thomas is a special player, who has always made a huge contribution on the pitch and we are looking forward to him being a part of our future at Arsenal Football Club.” Vermaelen, who is now closing in on a return to full fitness said: “I am really happy to have signed a new contract with Arsenal. I always had the intention to stay here. I feel there is a big belief in me from the Club, from the boss and from the fans and that is one of the reasons why I stayed. Arsenal is a fantastic Club. We have great supporters, we’re doing well financially and we are playing with some quality young players now and they will develop, which is very good for the future.” Everyone at Arsenal Football Club is looking forward to Thomas’ continued contribution in the forthcoming years. http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/vermaelen-signs-new-long-term-contract Quote: Vermaelen - This club has a bright future By Chris Harris Thomas Vermaelen signed a new deal at Arsenal because he believes the Club has a bright future. The vice-captain has established himself as one of the Premier League’s top defenders since arriving in north London in 2009 and has committed himself to the Arsenal cause by putting pen to paper on a contract extension. Vermaelen cited the belief shown in him by Arsène Wenger and the supporters as a major factor in his decision. And the Belgian wants to repay that faith when he returns to action in the near future. "I feel there is a big belief from the Club, from the boss and from the fans and that is one of the reasons why I stayed," he told Arsenal Player. "I feel great here, it's a fantastic Club and that is why I want to stay here. I played my first year here, had a big injury last year and then got injured again. I want to show something back to the Club and to the fans and that is why I want to stay longer. "Of course you cannot look into the future but I have a big belief that this Club will continue doing well. We had a bad start in the league but I think if we fight hard we will get through this. In the following years Arsenal will stay a big Club. "You can feel that [there is a strong base here]. You hear from the board that the Club is doing well financially. We are playing with young players now and they can develop - that is good for the future I think." http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/vermaelen-this-club-has-a-bright-future \:d/ \:d/ \:d/ \:d/ Now just Theo, Song and Robin to go. Quote:Wenger reveals Arsenal mutiny
Arsene Wenger has claimed "half the dressing room wanted to leave" Arsenal this off-season and the hangover could be behind its poor start to the season.
Sunday's 2-1 win over Sunderland lifted Arsenal back into the top half of the table, but the Gunners are 12 points off the pace at the top of the table already and face a fight to reach the top four.
Their early season struggles were highlighted by the shocking 8-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford, coming on the back of a northern summer that saw key midfielders Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri sold despite Wenger's insistence he wanted them to stay.
"It was a very difficult summer because half the dressing room wanted to leave," Wenger said in comments made on French radio station RTL and reported by the Guardian.
"You're preparing for a season where you don't know who's going to come in, the players who are staying are asking themselves what's going on at the club, you've got a pre-season tour of Asia.
"It was extraordinarily difficult. What saved us is that we're a club that are extremely solid and united. Other clubs would surely have gone to pieces in those circumstances.
"What people forget is that we lost three key players because we've also lost [Jack] Wilshere. Three who were important in our midfield. Nasri, Fabregas and Wilshere have all been lost and they were the basis of our midfield last season.
"We've had to reconstruct our midfield entirely because Wilshere won't be back until January. Still, we've disappointed this season so far, given what's expected of us, but I think we're on the up again. The problem is you can only climb the table slowly. We're not too far away in terms of points from fourth place. We're too far away from the top two."
Wenger admitted that simple economics meant that players wanted to leave Arsenal because there was more money on offer elsewhere.
"It's not that [players have to leave to win titles]," he said. "The problem isn't that. Frankly, if you compare what Manchester City have won in the past and what Arsenal have won, then you don't go to Manchester City to win titles. Players go to Manchester City because they pay much better than Arsenal.
"They are a force clearly, because they have exceptional financial clout, so it's not surprising what they've done."
Now the Frenchman is facing questions over the long-term future of Fabregas' replacement as captain, Robin van Persie, who insists he is committed to the club but is yet to agree a new deal with 18 months left on his existing contract.
"For me being professional means that right up until the last day you are at a club you give 100% to that club," added Wenger.
"I'm not asking myself whether Van Persie is going to extend his contract in 18 months' time. For me what is important is that he plays well for us (against Marseille) on Wednesday. After that the next match. That's how I think.
"He's scored 28 goals in 34 games, so they're exceptional statistics. He's got a contract for another 18 months and he's a man who is attached to our club. I'm not especially thinking about losing him." http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/news/1077355/Wenger-reveals-Arsenal-mutiny

I think the half the dressing room bit is an exaggeration, but I don't doubt for a second that a fair few players would've been having doubts, and a few probably wanted to leave.
And there is no doubt our disastrous summer was a big part of the first 3 or 4 weeks of the season.

Dreadful, dull 92 minutes until the Welshman scores to give us a nice away win and to go top and take control of the group.

Oh my God that was boring. Glad to get the win, and good to get a clean sheet.
Hopefully don't have to sit through to many of those, but if we get the win I can handle it

The passing and build-up was quite good in the 2nd half, but final delivery into the box was garbage. Trying to whip balls onto RvP's head seems pretty pointless anyway. Bring back the 4-4-2 with Theo & RvP up top and we will definately look more dangerous in the final third.

That ends our run of 17 away games in a row without a clean sheet.
Kos was motm for me easily. Just immense. Thought Santos was quite good, as were Rosicky and Arteta.
