Also, we aren't chasing the title, at least not this season. Looks like you did not watch last Arsenal's league game, Mertesacker had a shocker. Germans perform best when playing for their national team. Actually, against Norwich apart from his mistake for the goal he was actually very good, and was great once again this morning against Dortmund.

But none of these players have the work rate and sheer defensive steel of Alex Song Gervinho scoring goals? His last attempt to back heel the ball in the open net will not win him any favours with Wenger. As far as one man team goes, take Van Persie’s performances the last 27 matches (give or take a few) and scoring in every one of them, of course everybody in the team contributes and the coach and so on, but he seams to be at the moment doing most of the work.

We are set up to give RvP chance after chance to score. He's just taking advantage of that. He's always had this form in him, he's just never been fit for long enough to see the results of it. It's not as if he's doing all the work himself. He's getting most of these goals because of the brilliant work on the wings by Gervinho and Walcott feeding him chance after chance.

Great to be through to the next round, would be so awesome if after all the doubters writing us off, we end up being the only English side to make it out of their group

The 2nd goal v Norwich - that was all RVP. Absolute class, and nobody else in your team could do that IMO.

Again, he was only handed that chance because of the inch perfect pass from Song, and the fact that Song chose to ignore a wide open Gervinho. The finish was all him, and I agree, no one else in our side could do that, but it wouldn't have been possible without Song's work. Edited by sydneycroatia58: 24/11/2011 04:19:48 PM

That's why I said 'not recently', frankly Gervinho can finish, we've seen him finish and he has the ability to fashion scoring chances for himself. Alrite, he cocked up a backheel into an open net and didn't score 1v1 in Europe. What about Mario Balotelli? Frankly, any striker worth his salt should be at least score in half the games he plays in when you're at Arsenal. We play with one man up front, he's supposed to be a clinical finisher... Thierry Henry anyone?

I know this is going to be a totally roundabout argument, but Song's pass would've meant nothing if it wasn't RVP on the end of it. :P

It is funny when you think about when we had Cesc we were a one man team and were fucked if he left. Now he's gone and RvP's stepped up. And in his absence what's the bet someone else steps up and we are a one man team again
It may just be me, but I find all this talk from the media about us being a one man team very disrespectful to every other player in the side, because RvP's goals would not be possible without them. So for anyone to actually seriously consider us a 1 man team, well I have some serious worries for their mental health

Saw Song's run/assist against Dortmund last night on SBS's UCL hour, my jaw dropped. Who does he think he is?

Edited by sydneycroatia58: 25/11/2011 11:29:10 AM Hey, you don't have to tell Liverpool fans about pundits constantly calling you a one man team. Well, two. Stevie and Torres were all that mattered, then Xabi left and apparently HE was the sole reason for our downfall. And now apparently if we lose Suarez we're fucked

The dumbest thing I think I've seen in the media is the old where would we be if you take away RvP's goal  Because it's totally unthinkable that nobody else could score any of the goals RvP has

Also have to say that the performance from Alex Song against Dortmund is the best I have seen from him as an Arsenal player. He was just immense. He cops a lot of criticism for not being defensive enough and being to attacking, but yesterday he made just 1 pass in the final third throughout the whole game, and that was the cross for the goal.
Where he really excelled last night was in defence, he was just unbelievable. made all 5 of his tackles, and 7 interceptions which is exceptional. He last night once again showed just how good a defensive midfielder he can be. And to think we bought him for just 1m from Bastia.

If we learn't one thing from that match, it's that Andrei Arshavin should not be anywhere near a starting place in this team. I'd have Benayoun ahead of him as well. Gervinho showed more in the 20 mins he was on than Arshavin did in 75. If Zenit come in for him either in January or the summer we should sell him.

I'd feel worse about this result if it weren't after a Champions League match. There's always the chance of this happening after a match like we had against Dortmund, and a draw was a fair result.
Thought Theo was outstanding. That cross for the Vermaelen goal was just fucking superb. Also thought Djourou was great and Andre Santos had by far his best game for the club. I think what gets unnoticed with him is just how much work he does. He is fucking everywhere. Also thought Gervinho was outstanding when he came on.

Also here's a good stat. Apparently that is the first time since like September 2005 that we haven't had a French player in our Starting XI in a league match

The feeling I had throughout the match was really weird. I always felt we could, whenever we wanted, shift up 2 or 3 gears and go for the win. Obviously, as Sydcro mentions the fact that the sluggishness and fatigue factor due to midweek Champions League was evident, we took a little while. Djorou being the fresh man at the back, was impressive tonight. Still though, he makes me nervous, a mistake is never too far away. Even when we went down a goal, I was confident. It was a really weird feeling, I knew we would create many chances to win, and at the same time, a draw I felt wasn't the worst result. Am I alone on that thought, I'm not sure?
I really love it when we go the 4-4-2, it brings back some good memories. The way we dictate and totally pressurise the opposition almost into a feeling of 'how the fuck do we stop this machine', always gets me asking why he doesn't play the system more often these days. When a player is constantly close to Robin, it opens up a whole lot more on the edge of the box. It gives the wide men in Theo and Gervinho a lot to target, and it gives the opposition defense a shitload of worries.
I felt Arsha on the left, was, like in his last 15+ games, useless. I liked what I saw when he played as a central forward, but obviously by then, he didn't have much time to show or create much.
Mixed feelings indeed

Thoughts on the league cup game against City in midweek? Will City play their first team? Will we play our first team? I honestly hope Van Persie doesn't start, this isn't a must-win game. Will be good to see how Park Chu Young goes anyway. Also we should be giving Yossi and Chamberlain starts too.

ESPN wrote:Wenger worried about wear and tear
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that leading goalscorer Robin van Persie is amongst a number of key players who are "in the red" and in need of a rest.
Wenger's comments follow on from a lacklustre performance against Fulham on Saturday, where a late Thomas Vermaelen header rescued a point for the Gunners in a 1-1 draw.
Abou Diaby, who was playing his first Premier League match of the season, suffered what Wenger hopes is only a minor muscular setback against the Cottagers and Theo Walcott had what the Frenchman described as a "hamstring alert", although the England winger played out the full match.
And after analysing all the stats and ProZone information, Wenger, who rested defender Laurent Koscielny and forward Gervinho at Emirates Stadium, has recognised the fact he will need to rotate his tired squad in the coming weeks.
Speaking ahead of Tuesday's Carling Cup quarter-final against Manchester City, Wenger said: "We have a few players on the edge like Van Persie and Walcott, who had a hamstring alert, and Aaron Ramsey. We'll have to see how they respond to 24 hours of rest.
"It will be easier for you to pick the Man City team because you can look in the stand and on the bench (against Liverpool) and you will see who plays on Tuesday. We have red alerts on a few players but I will pick as strong a team as I can."
With Van Persie, Walcott and Ramsey all left out of the provisional squad for the City game, Wenger said he felt that on-loan Israeli Yossi Benayoun, combative midfielder Emmanuel Frimpong, England under-21 starlet Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and South Korea captain Park Ju-young - who were both on target in previous rounds - can all rise to the occasion.
''I believe that some players are on the fringe of being really limited. I will rest some players, but I still want to play a team that has a chance to win the game,'' Wenger told Arsenal Player. ''Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Emmanuel Frimpong will play, but I consider them to be first-team players.
''Park is adapting to the level he is facing here and he has another opportunity against Manchester City tomorrow night to show that he can do it. Yossi has been absolutely fantastic, but we have so much choice in midfield and we play with three strikers. The chances for the midfielders are not so big and that is why he has not played as much as he deserves.''
Wenger has generally looked to his young players for the League Cup but, with City possessing such strength in depth, there will be a slight adjustment. "I will change my philosophy a little bit," Wenger said. "I've always said that I will play a team that has a chance to qualify. We will give them a game, don't worry."

No surprise he's worried about wear and tear. That's why I think there will be some major changes for the match against City. I think it'll be a mix of mostly experienced first teamers with some youngsters like Chamberlain and Coquelin thrown in there. I don't think City will be playing a big chunk of their first XI anyway.

Few transfer rumours around.
The Metro in England has used the old favourite "Sources close to the player" to say that Mario Gotze's preffered club if he were to leave Dortmund would be Arsenal or Barcelona. Has been a shitload of talk going around lately about a move in January, now if we were to sign him in January I would lose all of my shit. It's a long shot though.
Also reports that we had scouts at Koln on Friday to watch Lukasz Podolski. Not the first time we've been linked with him, and he would be a good signing, especially since we need another body upfront.
Also some links with Udinese's Romanian winger Gabriel Torje. We've been linked with himn for yonks and would be very very happy if we signed him.

Tbh, I'm just sick of Arsene Wenger complaining about his own players being burnt out. The buck stops with him.

TBF I don't really see that as complaining  More just talking about the team news for Wednesday and how some players are tired and will need a rest.
