He was... not the first (not just Arsenal) to fail to live up to that title. Like many of Arsenal's recent pickings from Ligue 1 they just haven't made the transition that well. Having said this he actually did start quite well scoring whilst RvP was injured then RvP came back and went on a subline run of form than has now lasted 2.5 seasons across two clubs.

He lost a lot of confidence due to lack of game time. When RvP left he was forced to compete with Podolski, Giroud for a place in the team and he just wasn't up to it.

It's a long story. For arguments sake I'll say yes though

So basically as a young whipper-snapper I played football and followed the Newcastle Breakers in the NSL. Then Dad decided to show me a few late-night or taped games of EPL, just to see the difference in quality of the leagues. Eventually I found myself solely watching Arsenal games, just to watch Vieira play. The dude was a monster - I idolised him. I wanted to be him exactly - reverse-MJ skin colouring style (not really, but srsly). I've never looked at it this way, but afro pointed out to me that it's a very "NBA" way of supporting a sport. Interestingly enough, I loved Roy Keane too. I loved their battles. My favourite number is 16, because Vieira was 4 and 4x4 is 16 and RK was 16.

So I found myself buying heaps of Arsenal jerseys as I was legit obsessed with Vieira. Then when I researched into the whole transfer to Italy ordeal with PV, I kind of felt insulted by how Arsenal treated him. So I had a couple of years of "hating" Arsenal. Since then I've considered myself a neutral, but religiously keep up with the league in general as I love the media circus surrounding it. But I still have a huge soft spot for Arsenal, and developed a soft spot for a team that shall remain nameless. And I have a giant mancrush on German football, and love FC St Pauli to death

So I still have a huge soft spot for Arsenal, have a secret crush on an unidentified team, and have forever hated Hotsperms & Liverpool.

Remember Pv4 when he completely discounted our chances:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/article-55834/Vieiras-Highbury-feud-turns-ugly.html

What happened after that summer again? Oh, that's right - we did the double. Lost a lot of respect for him then. Him going to Man City topped it off.

Phaaarque....

I remember him being quite outspoken and prickly when it cam e to contract renegotiations but I really didn't remember this. Having said this he was right abpout jeffers and Wright they weren't great quality and GVB (as good a quality as he was) was found out for pace in the EPL.

Bergkamp was meant to be 'the next big thing' for Arsenal when he was 26.
And that's rough on Borini to dismiss him after one season, which was in fact comparative to Chamakh's 2011-12 season (Borini scored 2 in 20 and Chamakh scored 1 in 19).

Another transfer window and yet another link to Yoann Gourcuff

Quote:
Gourcuff 'would take pay cut' at Arsenal

Yoann Gourcuff is ready to lower his sizeable salary to secure a move to Arsenal, according to the Lyon playmaker's club president Jean-Michel Aulas.

Gourcuff, 27, has failed to deliver on the promise that persuaded Lyon to pay €22 million for him in 2010 and offer him a monthly wage of more than €400,000, making the midfielder Ligue 1's highest-paid Frenchman.

Having struggled for both fitness and form over the past three seasons, OL have been looking to offload the France international, whose situation has been monitored by Arsene Wenger.

Responding to Monday's reports in L'Equipe to the contrary, Aulas told the sports daily that Lyon would not be willing to pay any of Gourcuff's salary to allow him to join a Ligue 1 club on loan and revealed the former Bordeaux man was only willing to make financial sacrifices to go to North London.

"Can you see us paying part of his salary for him to play against us with another French club? We've never considered that and it would even more stupid now than it was a fortnight ago," Aulas stated after seeing Gourcuff contribute a goal and two assists in Lyon's 4-0 win over Nice last weekend, their first game of the Ligue 1 season.

"All that I know, if I understood correctly, is that he was ready to lower his salary to go to Arsenal, but that's not the same thing."

Also followed by Monaco and Atletico Madrid, who have long been linked with him, Gourcuff has another two years left on the deal he signed when he moved to the Stade de Gerland from Bordeaux three years ago.

Aulas remains open to the possibility of selling the former AC Milan man, stating on his official Twitter account last weekend that Gourcuff "is not for sale, but he can be bought", and added that he had told the player's lawyer he would grant a non-exclusive mandate to negotiate a transfer, but has not ruled out extending the huge deal to which he agreed.

"We can't change the contract," he said. "The only solution is to extend it. If the amortisation is done over eight years when it was planned over five, it becomes less expensive. But we're in a quite unfair system: if there's someone to criticise for his salary, it's me. I signed it, that contract, with his agent."

Gourcuff could be a great player but he's developed a reputation for being quite lazy at training. And if he can't make it work in Lyon he's not going to bring much to Arsenal.

Every ‘big Arsenal signing’ so far this summer seems to have evaporated into thin air over a few extra quid in the grand scheme of things. And it’s getting a little bit daft.
If it’s a shrewd, value-for-money bargain Wenger and the board are chasing, why were they nowhere to be found when the likes of Marco van Ginkel, Jores Okore, Arouna Kone, Iago Aspas and Emanuele Giaccherini became available? Even Victor Wanyama arrived in England for less than what they are apparently prepared to give to Bayern.
Of course, none of those are on the same level as the likes of Higuain, Suarez and Gustavo. But the Gunners should not be trying to pass themselves off as big spenders if they are not prepared to play the big spenders’ game.
Instead, Wenger now resembles that granny pottering around the market stalls, gazing almost eternally at the various items available but not willing to part with those copper coins in her purse.

Extract from a Eurosport article- echoes my sentiments exactly at Arsenal's current transfer plight :(

if i remember correctly wenger was going to buy alonso from liverpool, yet disagreed over fee by few million.

its been a central theme over time and a big failing by wenger.

maybe we need a technical director to negotiate and buy players without wenger screwing up the deal.

That's if any of that is true , with what's gone on this window I find it hard to believe anything that doesn't come directly from a club

Higuain deal- Madrid jacked up the price.Probably a fail.
Suarez deal- Too early to call.
M'Vila?  The player who we were linked with yet never made a bid for, cool.
Ginter- Reported by the fucking daily fail.
Jovetic- Never bid.
Gustavo- Never bid.
Bernard, Fellaini, Rooney - never bid.

This so fucking much. Especially Liverpool. When your best player wants to move to us, even with all of these 'failures', says a lot about your club doesn't it. Spurs fans have some reason to be optimistic, they're genuinely turning themselves into a decent club. Liverpool have nothing but history atm.

Despite all that, you still all fap over the potential signings.

Looks to me like you haven't got the balls or ability to spend the money. Keep up lads.

Your lot does too, it just doesn't get noticed on this forum because there is literally 1 of you that frequents WF. Every team 'faps' over potential signings, i dont get how that's a bad thing.

Yet again, you're seriously delusional if you think we don't have the ability to spend money. Again, Wenger's willingness to spend /= available funds.

There is still plenty of time left in the window, some people carry on like it's ending tomorrow  Arteta,Mertesacker and Cazorla all popped up out of nowhere late in the window, and are arguably 3 of our most important players.

TBH Vaughn all your take on this transfer window for Arsenal seems a bit counting-chickens-before-they-hatch-esque. When the transfer window is over and Arsenal haven't signed anyone, maybe then you can gloat. Otherwise you just look like a typical Spurs supporter - well before the overweight female has begun singing you're on this pedestal, and it's only a matter of time before you look like a fxxxing idiot when it's St Totteringhams Day.

FWIW I firmly believe Arsenal need a few signings. A quality DM, Striker and backup RB/CB would be ideal IMO. But I wouldn't be overly worried if they didn't sign anyone - it's a young squad that is getting better year by year. According to some site I just googled, Tottenham's average age is 26.9 whilst Arsenals is 25.8. Tottenham have made some solid signings but are losing their best player, while Arsenal haven't lose anyone but deadwood they've pushed out. And Arsenal have been invited into the Champions League, whereas Tottenham haven't. If I were a neutral, I'd think Arsenal were sitting in a much better position TBH.
