aw.. Coates looks so lonely. But good to see him fitting in.

Poor lad looks so out of place. But it's good to see the South Americans at the club are taking him under their wing. He'll benefit a lot from having Maxi and Luis there.

Still maintain that Carroll coming on with 20 minutes to go is the way to go. A fresh Carroll against tired toffees would end horribly for the toffees

I'm inclined to disagree. Later in the game he's going to suffer from a lack of service as the rest of the team tires. You're better off bringing on Kuyt to give the team run and penetration.

Gerrard won't start, Kenny will take it slow. Another major injury would end his career, so he won't be rushed. I think his first start will be against man u in 2 weeks

Yeah, I doubt he'll start too.

Especially as if we do then Capello will have an excuse to call him up next week. If he doesn't start, then Stevie will stay, which is better for us, and then hopefully start v the Mancs.

Fabio Capello will watch Steven Gerrard on Saturday with as much scepticism as hope if the Liverpool captain takes some part in the Merseyside derby. The England manager has to be convinced that the midfielder is in good enough condition and form to feature at all in next week's critical Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro in Podgorica.

Gerrard has misgivings of his own, having made only two brief appearances as a substitute since a groin operation in March. "I'm not really sure how much I'm going to play against Everton," he said, "so, in my opinion, it's probably still a bit too early. I don't make the decisions. Those are down to the England manager.

"I'm sure he'll have a discussion with [the Liverpool manager] Kenny [Dalglish] and between them they can decide what the right thing is for me. In my opinion there are other players out there who are match fit who are probably more suitable for that game but we'll have to wait and see. If I'm called up, I'll deal with it."

Gerrard could conceivably appear as a substitute in Montenegro but England seem disinclined to make any demands of a convalescent. Capello may be giving more thought to the right-back issue. With Glen Johnson injured and Chris Smalling affected more by flu than by his groin strain, England regard Micah Richards and Tottenham Hotspur's Kyle Walker as candidates for that position.

Capello will be at White Hart Lane on Sunday, where Walker can expect to be tested by Arsenal. Franco Baldini, the England general manager, will also be at the match so that he and Capello can finalise a squad that will be announced afterwards. The meeting with Montenegro merits particular attention since a point is needed against them to clinch automatic qualification for Euro 2012.

In general circumstances look helpful to Capello. Wayne Rooney appears to have overcome a hamstring problem and should confirm his readiness when Manchester United meet Norwich on Saturday, with Baldini present to check on his condition. The alternatives in attack are expanded, too, by the anticipated return of Darren Bent for Aston Villa after a groin strain.

Although Montenegro have mustered only five goals from six matches in Group G, where England have scored three times as many, visitors usually find these opponents resilient. It may therefore be vital that players such as Rooney and Bent are at their sharpest in Podgorica.

Could Suarez play lone up front and keep Carroll for a tactical surprise later on?

I'd rather we played Carroll.

And if we don't, no way Suarez will be lone striker. Bellers or Kuyt will be up there with him.

So, Luis playing a more deep-lying role while Craig playing the more defensive striker role?

John Henry had a fall on his boat yesterday and got taken to hospital, but by all accounts he should be ok.

Carroll coming from deep is a waste of his ability. Suarez alone up front could work, as their defenders will mob him and free up space for our midfielders. But I'd rather we played 2 up top and just out ran them.

I don't think Gerrard should be starting either, we don't want to see him come back and then get rushed back into the England line-up and it'd be nice to have a reason to keep him out of the frame in England's matches, especially when it's essentially a dead-rubber for England and a draw will be enough to qualify.

I think Hendo will understand - the derby is a massive game and Kuyt had to play at somebody's expense.

I wonder how we'll set up. Carroll lone striker and Kuyt on the right? Or both up front with Suarez and Downing behind? Or Carroll and Suarez up top?

I think it will be the same system we usually see, just Kuyt in on the right for Hendo. That said, Kenny has been playing Kuyt up top when he has played.

the line-up essentially picked itself.

And your point about Gerrard is spot on. As imnofreak, another big injury and it could be the end of Stevie G so we got to manage him much smarter

At 31, going on 32 this May, he's got 2 maybe 3 good seasons left in him in the first team. A serious injury in that period, though being bad for him could be good for the club, forcing them to spend big on bringing in his heir.

Disagree with having to spend big on a heir. Henderson, Spearing, Shelvey are already at the club and they all have the potential to be long term replacements for Gerrard

Henderson, though being useful long-term doesn't have what it takes to turn a game on its head on his own, IMO. He'll still be there in a 10 years time, hopefully, filling a more Meireles/Alonso-type role than Gerrard's.

Spearing is a different kind of midfielder and I don't see him with a long term future at the club. I think he'll leave for a mid-table side to get more regular football where he'll be more effective as a hard-nut player.

Shelvey...(I'll probably cop stick for this but I'm saying it anyway) I don't rate him. He's a decent player but he doesn't read the play well enough and often I see him out of position. I don't think he has what it takes to become the lynch-pin of the side.

I think it's good that we've got all this English blood at the club, but I think there's a lack of overseas x-factor there. We can't be relying on Suarez alone to turn a game.

Stoked with the win. So relieved to get the three points.

Pepe was perfect when called on.

Kelly was quiet but put a few good balls in and did well for the most part.
Carra and Skrtel were tops.

Enrique was great in the second half.

Lucas did his usual thing, swept everything up and didn't put many touches wrong.
Adam was disappointing, not surprising this game passed him by.

Downing was quiet too.

Kuyt worked his socks off, fantastic shift.
Carroll did not much in the first half, but had almost 0 service. Took his goal very well.

Suarez was my MOTM, not his finest game but he was a constant thorn in the side. Kuyt close second.

Bellers and Gerrard looked both well when they came on.

Lucas:
68/74 passes
92% comp

6 tackles, 4 won.
2 clearances, both successful
2/3 headers won

He topped the charts for passes, attacking third passes, tackles and tackles won.

To start off Rodwell shouldn't of been sent off, he clearly got the ball and only 1 second later he clipped Suarez.
We dominated the majority of the game in their half and Stuart, Charlie showed some of their attacking ability. Kuyt was awful, he was completely useless and he missed a penalty. Anyway good to see Andy scored and Luis continue his good form.

I don't think Kuyt has had an awful game in his life. If that penalty went in I think a lot of people would be singing a different tune. Its not as though it was a bad penalty, it was right in the corner. It was only unfortunate for Kuyt that Howard threw himself the right way, it was a 50/50.
