As much as the final result disappoints clearly its a good kick up the arse tbh. Long way to go for all but I hope we get back to our attacking fluency real quick - I imagine Mario will start from the bench coming up against spurs. Good news is that johnson has a slight thigh injury - please start up Flanno BR.

Expecting to get a 'group of death' in tonight's UCL draw.
Weekend's game will be interesting. Think Flanno is still injured so it will (hopefully) mean Manquillo at RB and Moreno at LB. Moreno was good against City apart from the hesitation on the 1st goal, although Lovren takes some of the blame in my book. Hopefully Coutinho gets back to where he was against Dortmund, hasn't been great in the first two.
Putting it out there now, all I want from this season:
- Top 4 finish - Get out of the group stage in UCL - Mario to score 15 goals plus
1 & 2 would make it a successful season IMO.

Not many teams will take points at the Etihad this season.. It would have been nice to try to grind out a draw but it's not surprising that we were well beaten. We need to bounce back strongly over the next few games.

and didn't they do the job on the high flying spurs. Mario had a header on goal before he knew it straight to the keeper sadly first 10min. Lasted an hour couple more games he'll be settled. Overall sound performance, we look much better with Moreno Manquillo out wide, Moreno's attacking run down the flank and shot was damn great to watch \:d/ Loveren is mobile and solid he'll keep improving like his game. The SS did the job, Sterling typically his usual game, brilliant then some minor errors but once your in front we forgive this - Sturridge is great on his feet with the ball, hope he gets his radar on soon enough. Spurs are playing far more open, shifting the ball much better than last year but defensively we played them very well - we cut off plenty of ball, you could see we are getting stronger defensively. As SG said after game interview - main thing is the clean sheet. Edited by M.L.: 1/9/2014 10:32:33 AM

Good win. Very much deserved, Spurs produced next to nothing on the night.
Moreno and Manquillo were both very good, I would like them to continue as FBs. Bye bye Glen.
Lovren is beast, made a few rare errors but recovered superbly everytime.
Sakho looked like a baby giraffe and will not be displacing Skrtel with performances like that.
Allen did well, kept the ball in tight spaces and was always an option.
Hendo was motherfucking beast mode god I love him so much. Was everywhere, tremendous work and assist for the first goal (look at his run after he lays it off to Sturridge to get it back) and never stopped working his socks off. Absolutely integral to the team.
Gerrard made a couple of key tackles and interceptions in the middle and passing range was spot on as always.
Sturridge isolated didn't see it much but when he did held it up superbly.
Sterling a handful every time he got the ball, if only he had a little more composure after that brilliant run.
Balotelli impressed me, worked extremely hard, was covering at LB and RB at times, committed to the cause, showed a great touch. Just a bit rusty obviously and perhaps on another day could have had a goal or two.
Very happy! Don't expect us to complete any late business before the deadline unless it's Lucas out and another DM in.
Hopefully we can offload Borini and Assaidi. Will unfortunately probably end up being loans.
Don't know what the situation with Suso is either.

imno to be honest they did attack us from wide at times - some cross's went right past the goal thankfully no one there. I actually thought spurs on the ball were pretty sharp but as mentioned we were on them really quick - Lamela the recent weeks has awoken but we had him covered very well - as you say Hendo is so mobile love his workrate had him covered. This is what frustrated spurs we were very sound. Mario was rusty but as you say liked how he'd run down the wide backs putting pressure on them and then covering down our end defending corners. Can't wait till he gets settled as mentioned. From memory now over the last 3 spurs games our GF is 12.

Lovren and Sahko didn't defend the high ball over the top well. They need to work on communication. Could have been a different game if chadli found the net!

As mentioned by imno Lovren made some errors but overall did a fare job - yer being a new CB combo had its moments but overall did enough. Sakho sure won't be with Lovren week in week out Skrtl will be no doubt and look forward he back. Even had chaldi converted we created more - Raheem bombed a sitter after all his hard work. We are trying too much getting to the 6yard box.

Thought his passing range was anything but spot on. He was spot on from the halfway back with mostly square passes, but his passing in the attacking third was way off with just 7/18 completed with one of those being a corner. Edited by sydneycroatia58: 1/9/2014 01:24:55 PM

Solid performance and a clean sheet, got to be happy with that.
Lovren was great, Sakho not so - a lot of it has to do with him just looking farken unco but he made a couple really shite passes that could have had us in trouble. Communication between the 2 CBs wasn't great at times but that will come.
As the graphic above shows, Stevie was off, but the mention he was struggling from about 2 mins in so that explains it. The good thing is we can get a result now without Stevie having a great game. Couldn't have said that a few years ago.
Very happy with Balotelli's debut, should have scored at least a goal but was more impressed with his work off the ball. If he keeps that up he'll be fine.
Pretty happy so far, the next month is quite good for us fixture wise so hopefully we an build some good momentum.

The Balotelli signing distracted this over the weekend but this blog from ESPN sums up my thoughts perfectly. We're losing a great player and I wish him well. Quote:Appreciating Daniel Agger In an era in which almost every footballer seems to harbour ambitions of one day playing for Real Madrid or Barcelona, Daniel Agger was one of the few who bucked the trend. For most modern players, other clubs are seen as merely a step on the ladder to either of the La Liga giants. Agger, however, is not like most modern footballers; he's a complex character who values a settled and happy home life above money and trophies. The Dane had numerous opportunities to leave Anfield and was the subject of serious interest from Barcelona on more than one occasion, but he showed little or no interest in ever leaving Anfield until this summer when he found himself surplus to requirements. It will have surprised many to see him return to his first club, Brondby, when at just 29 years of age he could still be playing in one of Europe's big leagues for a top club, but Agger was not going to leave Merseyside to go just anywhere. It had to be the right move for him and his family. He certainly had no interest in remaining in England and playing for one of Liverpool's rivals, that's for sure. The Dane appears to not be driven by ambition or financial motivation, and there are much more important things in his life than football. Some players live and breathe the game; others are not that interested in football but just happen to be rather good at it. Agger falls into the second category. His response to the seemingly annual speculation linking him with a move to the Catalan giants was usually to shrug and say "It's up to the club." The only way he was leaving Anfield was if he were no longer wanted, and unlike some of those he has shared a dressing room with over the years, he was never tempted by "greener pastures." That's a rarity in modern football; when presented with a better offer, most players try to force this issue themselves by whatever means necessary. Compare Agger's behaviour with that of Javier Mascherano for instance, who reportedly refused to play for the Reds against Manchester City in a bid to force through a move to Barcelona. Steve McManaman, Michael Owen, Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso moved on to Real Madrid, and of course this summer Luis Suarez followed Mascherano and swapped Anfield for Camp Nou. Like it or not, most footballers see Real and Barca as the pinnacle of their profession, so I always had a lot of time for Agger, simply because he did not. He loved being at Liverpool, he settled well into life in the city, and as long as LFC wanted to keep him, he was happy to stay regardless of who wanted him. That kind of attitude will always endear a player to supporters, especially when it's allied with the kind of talent Agger has. When Manchester City made a play for him a couple years ago, he responded by getting "YNWA" tattooed on his knuckles. At that time, Liverpool were floundering, having finished in eighth place, sacked club legend Kenny Dalglish and then appointed a rookie manager from Swansea City. Few would have blamed Agger for moving to City at that time, and I wonder how many of his teammates would have turned up their noses at a move to the reigning champions (not to mention the significant pay raise that comes with it)? Not too many, I suspect, but like I said, Agger is not like most modern footballers; he's a throwback to earlier generations, when players would stay at the same club for most of their career as long as they were happy and in the team. Liverpool have lost financially by having to sell to Brondby for a fee much lower than the player's market value, but the truth is they had little choice. Agger wanted to return home and has taken a massive pay cut in order to do so. He was unlikely to feature much at Anfield this season, having slipped to number four in the centre-back pecking order, and ideally Liverpool would have preferred to sell to a top European side that could have paid the going rate for a player of the Dane's undoubted quality. That was not an option because Agger was not interested in signing for anybody other than Brondby. He could have returned there in his twilight years, but instead he's gone back home while he still has plenty of good football left in him. I commend him for that and wish him every success with his new/old club. He leaves Anfield as a popular figure after almost nine years at the club and will always be assured of a warm welcome should he ever return with Brondby. He only managed to win one trophy in his time at Anfield (the 2012 Carling Cup), but he did play in a Champions League Final in 2007, when AC Milan exacted revenge on the Reds for their defeat in Istanbul two years earlier. It was Agger's goal in the second leg of the semifinal that led to a penalty shootout victory over Chelsea that secured Liverpool's place in the final, and that's the moment I'll always remember whenever I think back on Agger's time on Merseyside. The first goal he bagged was memorable, too -- a 30-yard screamer against West Ham at the Kop end. He could have been one of the greats had he been able to steer clear of injury, but over the eight seasons he was at the club, he probably missed as many games as he played. His body, sadly, wasn't up to the demands of playing regular football, something he admitted himself when explaining his decision to leave, but whenever he was able to put a run of games together he looked a class act. He was not without his faults, of course -- he struggled to deal with the more physical strikers and was often found wanting when defending set-pieces -- but Daniel Agger was a fine footballer for Liverpool. Just as importantly, he was also a loyal servant and a stand-up guy who didn't view the Premier League and Liverpool as merely a stepping stone to the Bernabeu or Nou Camp. I just wish there were more like him. Good luck, Dan. http://www.espnfc.com/club/liverpool/364/blog/post/2012322/appreciating-daniel-agger

 yes true events such as Mario and other recent signings coupled by the spurs game over shadowed his release  Always done his best for the shirt - admired his effort, shame as said he's been around one of our worst periods but what a club man and to return to his 1st club at 29. They would be so rapt having a back of his experience still able to carry on for some years. All the best AGGA, YNWA =d>

Sturridge looks to be is out for 2-3 weeks including our opening champions league game. Do you replace him with a striker from our bench, put sterling upfront and bring lallana or coutinho at AM, or change the formation?
Sterling's versatility is leaning me in the direction to slot him up front and bring Coutinho again at AM.
I imagine we're gonna start seeing some lallana soon.

It's a bit of the "I'm not english, I'm scouse" attitude that many of our fans have. Ah well they're a good laugh I'm not so angry now at the English NT anymore since Hendo's already back, but just the fact every time Sturridge goes away on camp with England he gets injured in training makes me think they must overwork him too much for meaningless friendlies and Euro qualification that England should be able to walk straight through.

Injuries already mounting for us ! Sturridge as we know - thigh, few weeks. Can, playing the NT U21's done ankle - up to 6wks #-o Skrtel out but should be back next week. Allen - playing for Wales on a crap pitch knee concern ? could be ok. Johnson - well not fussed but still a couple of weeks. Flanno yet to get fit not in squad. Lallana should be on for Villa game. Mario should be in better shape and ready to fire were going to need this. It's all or nothing isn't it. Nothing for 2 weeks due to NT duties/friendlies etc then 5 matches the next 2 weeks :)

At least we have a bit of squad depth now. Lallana coming back should cover Allen, if not be an improvement over, and one of Markovic/Coutinho/Lambert should be a decent enough replacement for Sturridge, with a little formation jiggling.
Sturridge is a huge blow, don't get me wrong, but we've got enough depth for it to not be season-defining. I hope he returns from injury quick enough.
