Poor Crowds at the cricket

Lots of discussion about this, interesting after how united Australia was after winning the Ashes last season - what happened?

Cricket crowds have been on the decline for years now.

It's because it was a meaningless series where both teams were trailing players for the World Cup. Bring out a top drawing nation for serious games in summer and the crowds will be fine. Cricket Australia seriously need to realise this with their ticket prices for these lower drawing matches.

Also their is a stupid amount of cricket on these days, which is only getting worse. We've played 8 internationals at home and the summer hasn't even started.

Absolutely awful. I know Phil's family and just feel sick to the stomach about it all.

He's a tough lad, hang in there champ!

What does bother me is how much the media has focused on this

Accidents/ freak accidents happen, even in the most innocuous of circumstances, but because it happened on a cricket field its got wall to wall coverage

For one, the media cant do anything about what happened, nor aide the medical process

Why in the hell do the Australian Media / Papers hell bent of showing the exact moments when Phil Hughes collapsed over and over and over again...whats the xxxxxxxxxx point!

insensitive, disgusting and self absorbed. Makes me sick

What also got me riled was the helmet manufacturing company coming out and saying he wasn't wearing the latest helmet...obviously trying to make sure they are not sued rather than being concerned for his welfare

Hopefully he will pull through

Its not a big story cos it happened on a cricket field, its a big story because it happened to Phil Hughes, an Australian test cricketer.

Given cricket is truly national, rather than AFL or NRL, the national cricket team is arguably our most famous sporting team. The socceroos are not too far behind.

It wouldn't matter what the sport was, if a current national team member/former member on the cusp of the national team was critically injured on the field and fighting for their life, then I reckon it would be front page news.

Might be seen as an overreaction but cricket associations should look at designs similar to American football helmets to replace the current ones

Context

They report cricketers dying on espncricinfo from people playing the game all over the world, but it doesnt even register on the news here

Also, a guy doing a somersault and broke his neck after scoring a goal did not even make it onto the news here :-k

To make it a story by the media is an exercise in crocodile tears

Because horrible things happen all the time! Regardless of how small! Its an apathetic world out there!

Relatively good day for India, 6 down plus an injured batsman on a good batting pitch after Warner got away in the manner he did.

Clarke should retire, totally selfish of him to play this test when he was not fit. And then the joke of a decision at the end with the night watchman and then Haddin getting out as well.

If he wants to play on he should retire from one day cricket after the World Cup. I'm happy to still have him in the test team but he needs to be fresh. He keeps trying to come back too early.
