Seeing the cricket is well under way, just to play silly buggers and kindly assist some tea and scones 'debate', here's some FTA ratings on both 20/20 and last nights 50 over between Au and Eng. Not apples for apples but an insight into the glaring difference in numbers available to draw corporate backing.

Note - fta ratings are 5 city metro, only. There's no regional areas included, which usually adds around 25-30 percent to the metro total.

20/20 last week -
4 Twenty/20 Cricket – Australia vs England Nine 1,237,000
1 Twenty/20 – Australia V England Nine 1,317,000

Last night's (Sunday) 50 over -
1 Network 9 ONE DAY CRICKET -AUSTRALIA V ENGLAND GAME 1 SESSION 2 1,716,000
4 Network 9 ONE DAY CRICKET -AUSTRALIA V ENGLAND GAME 1 SESSION 1 1,037,000

Overall it is sad reading, but its an amazing result for the Asian Cup coverage, considering the times that it is played.

Crickets results are strange, given the Australian 50 over game was actually more popular than the 20/20 one.

This is what we should be doing before we contemplate FTA

Yes, but lets see how the KFC big bash rates 135 games into a 6 month season.

Never thought of that. That makes sense, considering the limited timeframe that it is played.

The ODI results though go over a longer period, and are still stronger than our results, so combined, we still have a long way to go.

I'm not sure those figures are too bad really, what type of interest is MElb v Adel or Melb v Sydney supposed to have in Perth or in Brisbane...the Socceroos are on at an unsavouray time slot against relatively unknown teams...I would think Fox and the FFA would be relatively happy with thise figures.

N.B The AFC has had almost no mainstream promotion or discussion in the mainstream media.

And as for the cricket, well it is summer and those games are all broadcast in 'primetime' with marquees like Dwayne Bravo brought in to spice things up, by comparison compare the figures for Adelaide when Romario came to town.

If the A-League was to average 40k in the ratings for each match then that equates to an accumulative average of 6,600,000 a season and we know the A-League does better than that. I think Fox would be happy with those figures.

High viewers over a shorter time is much more valuable that low viewers over a long period.

Not entirely true. In marketing terms, there are valid arguments in both corners. It all depends on the product/campaigns that are being run. As ads make up the core revenue proposition for sporting rights, it all would depend on the clients that Fox Sports has, and what they are looking for out of their marketing dollar.

The HAL numbers are not low, they are consistently on the average side of things yes, but are still in a good band to work from.

A 40k average is being very generous and no, we don't know the aleague does better than that. We don't see the games ratings that are not in the top 10. Most games. When sport is very lean on fox some do make the 10 and aren't pretty viewing. The average top one to two rating games is around 40-50k. The lower ratings are around or below 20k. I'd suggest an average would be much closer to 30 than 40k.

I don't understand what this has to do with paytv ratings. Those with paytv are exposed to the paytv promotions.

Take note in the next few fox telecasts and see if you notice a slow change in the target demographic for advertising over the last couple of years following Fox's own target audience with the trend towards the schoolgirl giggle fest on Saturdays and many pre game shows. It's getting younger and younger with much now aimed at teenagers and teens at heart.

In my opinion, following the trend of the league itself where the average age appears to be dropping further each year. And if research was available to display the actual age demographics of attendees over the period of the league, I'd lay money there's more than a subtle correlation with crowd averages. The narrower the target, the lesser the result.

Of course it will change over time, as the evolution of the market comes into play.

The youth market is actually a strong one to get hold of, but I still see many advertisers that are broader focused than a small segment you identify. Many brands want to be broader focused, cross-generational/demographically speaking, with an emphasis on gaining a foothold in numerous market segments. For example, Hungry Jacks, Good Guys and Solo all advertise heavily in football timeslots, yet none of them are focused on 1 segment only.

The largest proportion of fans is still likely to be the 20-40 type range, which has probably stablized abit, but that was bound to happen as the product matures.

TV, particularly pay TV, is a very hard market, given access and perforamnce pressures that can occur. Access is the main issue for pay tv, and performance is a hard one to get right on FTA, given its audience rating pressures that all networks are under.

Whichever way football turns, there are pros and cons. At this stage, its more important we get a good broadcast deal, and can inverst in the game. If the product becomes strong enough, we will have FTA and pay tv both at our door, wanting to broadcast the sport.

It will take time, but its now important the fundamentals are right, not just chasing FTA cioverage with a product that may not be ready for the pressures that can bring.

Its sad, but its now time to identify why that is the case. The main concern is that the level of football is now very high, yet ratings dropped off. Maybe the last couple of years (of relatively poorer standard football) has seen many turn off, or maybe the endless negativity that our code seems to have around it has taken its toll.

Fox Sports would have their targets in place, and may adjust their own internal advertising in line with those (eg. More or less promotion of matches, across fox sports and other foxtel channels).

Just a thought, since the a-league does rate as one of fox's top sports during the summer, wouldn't that make it a much more valuable product for them?

Lower ratings for the top games is more a result of who those top teams now are.

Sydney vs Melbourne the last game of the regular season where it was the top two teams that year, battling for the league premiership, that was to my recollection over 100k or 120k.

Now the top teams are Adelaide and Brisbane.. big markets sure, but not as big as Sydney Melbourne, and with Sydney and Melbourne not going as strong the league as a whole losing ratings.

It's just natural.

It'd be the same if the top teams in the NRL were suddenly Canberra, North Queensland, New Zealand, Gold Coast and perhaps the Sharks.

My last post, which you replied to, was directly related to the above.

As to the bolded text, work out why 95% of those involved in the game have no interest in attending games and you'll have an answer as to why not many less have no interest in paytv telecasts of the same league.

A good place to start is 'Because they don't like it enough to give a shite', then find out what is and isn't liked, get rid of the parts they can't stomach and highlight that which they do. But the record on ridding the game of the dislikes is very, very poor. It's almost as if there's a belief one will be struck down by a bolt of lightening if any part of the game is threatened. So, shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, it might hear you.

And what about last year when the ratings dropped from the previous? And the the previous year when they also dropped? I understand your line of thought, but would be careful not to credit it too much weight. The markets sizes in each club's region/state don't generally correlate to particular game ratings with the ratings being so tiny and such a minuscule part of each area.

My view after watching the ratings since the start of the league and other codes before and since, the aleague has slowly reached saturation point with this season coming to the current head on top of a glut of midweek games. Package this increase to almost double the games, with the aleague novelty decreasing over recent years, makes fertile ground for a stale market.

A-League showed be on FREE-TO-AIR!

That will bring more attention to the league rather than only being able to view matches on PayTV... I think crowds attendances will increase with the extra exposure... OR at least have a few games on FTA TV... let SBS show a couple matches each week! Something FFS! ](*,)

It has nothing to do with the ratings but I reckon last weekends games were the worst this season in terms of quality. I know the weather and depleted squads played their part (as well as Brisbane not playing) but my eyes hurt after watching that rubbish on the weekend.

Is this hard evidence of the lack of love football gets in the media?? I find it hard to believe that less people watched a Saturday night Final than a Mid-Week Semi Final let alone a Sunday Morning Quarter Final...

Amazing...

I don't understand your point.
This is paytv, seen only by subscribers regardless of media coverage outside Fox, whom btw, heavily promote their own special event telecasts to the only ones that can see both the promotion and the event. Their subscribers.

edit... the final was 1.30am btw

Those numbers are very sobering reading.

Not sure what Fox makes of them, especially the finals numbers.

The Super Rugby match between the Rebels and Waratahs didquite well, at 175K.

Not great numbers but remember the Friday night game was against the NZ side, so the ratings are going to be lower anyway and the Victory played GCU on Sunday at 5pm...hardly a prime time position.

Correct, but when you see NAB cup matches, which mean nothing, get very sizable numbers, its depressing reading:(

I'm sorry but those figures are appauling. Concrete evidence that the general public don't like the A-League. Its as if we are fighting a lost cause.

More people watched a replay of Rebels v Waratahs than any of the Round 27 Sunday matches last week. Disgusting. Perhaps it is only the people reading this forum who actually are watching the coverage?
