The HAL needs to have matches on FTA. If the Jets are playing Sydney in Sydney, there should be a live broadcast of the game on FTA TV in Newcastle and a delayed broadcast of it in Sydney. Do that for every team in the league and there would be some increased ratings.

But decreased media rights in the process....

Its not as good as it sounds, especially when we need all the money we can get, and ultimately, Foxtel seem to be the only ones willing to pay us decent cash:)

Not great numbers but remember the Friday night game was against the NZ side, so the ratings are going to be lower anyway and the Victory played GCU on Sunday at 5pm...hardly a prime time position.

Sorry to be a downer Joffa, based on past aleague ratings they wouldn't have been any better if it was telecast at your personal time of relaxation with a pizza of choice, a six pack of beer or bottle of nice red.
Quote:

Not sure what Fox makes of them, especially the finals numbers.

As i've said previously, we are lucky the season is at a time when live sport is at it's minimum. If subscription sales can be judged according to ratings/the amount of viewers per product, then in my unqualified opinion, keep the aleague as far away from other codes seasons at possible or lesson the telecast value of the product even more.

Agree in principle, but for fta to have interest in telecasting prime time matches, even secondary channels and at a give away price, the product needs to rate and rate pretty damn well and that needs to be firstly displayed on paytv. Remember, any prime time sport has to capable of replacing high rating non sports genre.

No Aleague game in the week 11 ratings period. The GF will be in week 12. Something i didn't notice in the above week 10 period were the ACL games of MV & SFC being somewhere below the #100 of 23k.

i just bothered to read this thread but to me this shows everything.

twice as many people watched man u vs city, of which most people would have never been to the club let alone england. but wont watch local football? this tell me there are way too many euro snobs in this country (and city are boring as bat shit) :(

and then the nab pre season cup is 5 times as many?

looking at the recent ratings put up at least we are similar to union.

cant wait for the final results.

We are?

The GF ratings will come in two separate time slots, game and post game like last seasons, because of the extra time.

Had a quick look at the regular seasons ratings of 09/10 & 10/11. 09/10 had 23 games rate 60k or higher. 10/11 had 2 games rate 60k or higher. Not all info is available, but it shouldn't be far from accurate. Aggregate audience should be higher with the increase in telecast games but will be tempered by the decrease in game ratings.

You got confused by one being a preliminary final and the other being the grand final. 2 different games mate.

The post with the top 10 sports broadcast is the ASTRA 'all inclusive' (includes metro plus regional areas) ratings and only the top 10 are published in that format. The other is the top 100 '5 city metro only' ratings. Syd, Mel, Adel, Perth and Bris.

FTA ratings are also metro only, but they state each cities ratings.

Hehe.. Thats not it at all. Read Skeptics post and Clintons, both for the GF.

As Skeptic has since stated though, theres a reason for the different numbers.

How does this compare with last years GF numbers? Given that last year was the 2 largest markets (Syd and Mel), I would expect there to be a substantial difference.

Thats actually not a huge decrease, considering the markets that were involved in each year.

Just to put the GF figures into perspective, indicate why the aleague should ultimately aim for fta when ready for the leap and why the NRL/AFL gain such large dollars from telecast rights and corporate sponsors, last season's GF rating for both leagues. Remembering paytv doesn't have the rights to either final series.

5 city metro only (no regional area ratings included)

NRL ch9 - 2,161,000
AFL ch7 - 2,777,000
AFL ch7 - 2,679,000 - rematch the following week.

Something to aspire to, at the very least?

Definately something to aspire to. Its just a pity that football is a harder product to televise, as there are 2 long halfs with limited break opportunities for advertisements. It will take a big shift in the mentality of FTA networks to take us seriously unfortunately.

It will also take a big shift in paytv viewer popularity before it gains the CV needed to justify being taken seriously and sell itself as a probable competitive fta product.

In a way yes, but basketball never really had huge numbers of Pay TV, but is now on One HD.

We are chasing the money, they are likely chasing a broader market (with less TV broadcasting cash as a result).

NBL's last Final on Fox didn't even make the Astra weekly top 50 ie less than 30K people watched it

I've watched the NBL quite a few times over the years, and I can definately see why only that many would tune in. Not exactly suprising.

Basketball suffers the same thing as Football in this country, and that is the shadow on bigger comps. The NBA seems to overshadow world Basketball to an unhealthy extent, much the same the EPL, in particular, does for our game. The flow on benefits just dont seem to flow to local leagues.

Flow on benefits don't exist, if you think about it. The flow tends to move in the opposite direction. People are seldom satisfied with a budget model when a superior model is readily available.

Btw, NBL fans aware of the high level of the EPL could very well be saying the same as your comment below, but in regards to the aleague. And be just as correct.

Correct. That was my point. If the shadow effect is in play, its not going to end well for the inferior product.

Fact 1: One W-League match has been broadcast LIVE every week on ABC TV for the past 3 years and attracts an average FTA TV ratings of 90k.

It would be reasonable to assume the A-League on FTA TV would attract ratings HIGHER THAN the W-League.

How much higher?

Fact 2: The W-League attracts LIVE crowds of less than 1k.

Fact 3: After 6 seasons, the average A-League crowds are 11.5k

Fact 4: For the past 6 seasons, the average NRL crowd is around 16k ...

... So, the live audience for A-League is 30% less than the live audience for NRL.

Fact 5: FTA TV ratings for NRL home & away matches is around 530k

It would be reasonable to speculate that FTA TV ratings for a LIVE Home & Away A-League match on FTA TV on a Saturday night could be 300-350k (40% less than average NRL FTA TV ratings and 3-4 times higher than W-League FTA TV ratings).

If the A-League attracted FTA TV ratings of around 300-350k on a Saturday, this would be around the Top 20 for a FTA TV show on Saturday.
