Qatar announced their intentions to do this ages ago. They have AFC support and their small country and good stadiums won't harm their chances.

Oil=Money.
Money helps but i dont really think FIFA will want to host it in a country linked with terrorism
They want people and families to feel safe coming to the tournament
Anyway

But why wouldn't it be betterment of football? If anything, football has the ability to bring peace, and a change for the people of Qatar. How is Qatar getting the World Cup going to be a bad thing? Even with all the difficulties its had, South Africa was still a great choice IMO. Why always choose safe options like England & Germany and not try and have the game expand?

FIFA states you need a minimum of 8 with a minimum capacity of 40,000. It's impossible to do it with less than 8 anyway based on the number of games each stadia could hold with the minimum number or days between matches.

That said, FIFA also only allow one city to have more than one venue (ala if Australia hosted Sydney could have 2, but then Melbourne could only have 1); it would be interesting in a country like Qatar who really only has 3-4 major cities capable of hosting large numbers of people. Not to mention the alcohol restrictions which would turn off alot of European travellers.

Cant believe anyone is in favour of Qatar hosting anything, though I do note your avatar is desert themed.
You need atmosphere at football matches,ie English,German,Australian,Turkish,Croatian,Scottish,Brazilian, imagine the quatar machine gunned military and anti alcohol laws being condusive to any world cup ,combine that with prayer music being sounded everywhere in arabic, what sort of festival would that be?
Australia deserves the world cup, failing that England a place where beer and more beer is drank.
A place where thousands of knowledgeable fans will turn up and even though neutral, will give those games credibility, not rent a crowd soccer mums as per 94 usa

youve never lived in africa or any other place like that have you.

yes its good to give the game to developing countries so as to create that exposure and build the game and give other countries a chance, but the implications of failure in these countries is far worse than failure in a european country. the aftermath of what is left from the world cup in south africa can be quite bad. the place is ridden with crime and corruption. just like in qatar it will be about a select few politicians wanting to take all the rewards and returns for themselves, hence the spectacle would be good, but the aftermath of it all could actually create more corruption...

Right, so the chance of corruption in TEN YEARS TIME, means we should deprive the people of Qatar the opportunity to have such games? Qatar has a high standard of living anyway. The chance of corruption is so much smaller there.

Blyth, that is a stupid thing to say. Prayer music in Arabic? Are you kidding? Get some culture. I'm sure the alcohol laws would be worked around, and if not, who would listen to them?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xV0jQ_1m0Ik Some people just seem afraid because of the link between terror and Arabs. Its nonsense.

Of course I want Australia to get the Cup, but I'd have no issues with Qatar getting it. I'd certainly have no issue going there.

Have you heard the games where prayer music in arabic is blared over loudspeakers(ok Iam not fluent in arabic) is it not prayer music ?
The point is the atmosphere would be dulla and totalitarian, and as far as by passing islamic alcohol laws if you are suicidal do it(you can do it in private but not in public, machine guns kill ,batons rarely do.

Its a good point nr690. It really is a joke to think that Doha is the same as Baghdad or something... Qatar is a wealthy place. Its a good place to bring the game to the middle east and let them see it.

Besides Blyth, it shouldn't matter where it is, you'll get to watch it wherever you want on your holographic field :P.

Ok Iam not a Qatar expert, but alcohol and Football are like Hp sauce and chips, tomato sauce and pies, man and woman, ect ect,I notice you a Middle east expert did not answer the genuine query about chants on middle eastern games involving aussie teams (in middle east) and other asian muslim places, there is nothing wrong with this ,it just does not suggest a place for traditional football fans.
I dare say you would have a world cup of half empty stadiums with machine gunned security facing four thousand glum looking England and australian fans.
Afraid to raise their arms in fear of being gunned down.
If you think the Middle east is a fun place, ask those who flee due to repression and persecution ,no it is not a fun place, and shame on the west for that.

Where do you get this idea from? You are pretty close minded. I have been to Muslim countries like Malaysia. They are hardly the way you speak of them. I've been to Communist countries and they are not that bad FFS. Qatar is not the way you picture it.

Ok but what about the loudspeaker chants is this not true?
I have been to the middle east, I sympathise with the plight of the lebanese Iraqis and palestinians who were forced to leave their beloved lands, all Iam saying is... this is not the atmosphere for Football, in Dubai,it takes two hours to travel 5km,the traffic is choked the climate in the northern summer is around 45c ,they come to the gold coast to escape the heat every year.
Imagine playing Football in such heat?
Iam not closed minded,do you know what the middle east is facing?

Sure, I know what they are facing and it wouldn't be easy. BUT, they have plenty of cash. The issue of climate is hard, but even A-league needs to deal with the summer of 40 degrees +. short drink breaks may be necessary in extreme conditions.

In regards to alcohol and loudspeaker chants, it may need to be worked around, and I am quite sure that if it comes down to it, Qatar would allow alcohol permits of some sort, and loudspeaker chants would be banned if it meant they could hold rites. Obviously there are issues, I don't doubt that. I just would like to see all continents and areas get the game and maximums its potential, both for the good of the game and the country and region itself.

Agree ,but why not go the whole way and include Palestine,Iraq,Lebanon, syria, sudan,as co hosts, out of respect for arab history?
That would be a aim worth busting the gut for,it would be a chance for the arab nations to show they can put aside the differences, and unite in peace.
Lebanon was and is a beautiful country, politics and deception has destroyed its peaceability,a world cup co hosted by several middle eastern countries(not just Qatarthe puppet regime would be a great idea.

Its a nice thought. I just think there is a great difference between Qatar and Iraq, Sudan etc. Much more difficult and then you really do have a safety issue. Qatar would give the opportunity for all these countries to feel important, yet it wouldn't really endanger anyone any more than any other World Cup. If in time these countries become more stable, then yes I agree.
