Saw a friend on facebook became a citizen today, and he posted his pledge. What do people think of our current pledge? Is it fair or slightly bigoted and one dimensional? I don't personally have a view, I just thought people might see it differently.

Pledgers can choose between pledge 1 and 2 depending on whether they would like to swear under God or not.

Pledge 1

From this time forward, under God,
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect, and
whose laws I will uphold and obey.

Pledge 2

From this time forward
I pledge my loyalty to Australia and its people,
whose democratic beliefs I share,
whose rights and liberties I respect, and
whose laws I will uphold and obey

I couldn't possibly see how this could be seen as "bigoted"?

If you think it is then you need to pick up a dictionary.

Yeah right, wrong word. I suppose 'hardline' is probably more what I was thinking.
Why must all new entrants believe in democracy when many here don't? Must they respect our rights or can they just acknowledge them? To what extend must they respect pre-existing rights?

Yes, you move to a country and you accept their values. It's part of the assimilation process. If you want to move to a country and disregard its values and everything that makes it great, what was the purpose of the move?

Besides, creating enclaves within countries by encouraging the non-assimilation of migrants is very dangerous.

I merely read the pledge and wasn't sure what I thought of it, and had never heard. Discussion about it... So I brought up the topic.

Have no issue with it other than the god part.
Some people aren't religious so making them mention someone that probably isn't even real is a little odd.

I think it's only meant as a patriotic thing. Our basic tenants are that we are a democratic nation.

I said the second version (not being theistic) when I became a citizen like 10 years ago.

No issue with the pledge.

But the citizenship test is a joke, immigrants shouldn't be forced to regurgitate random historical trivia or prove that they can speak English.

Apparently it's not too important a skill when your social group barely extends beyond the Veneto Club.
