This Friday marks the start of the end of our Australian 4door cars :( Holden in Elizabeth close's next year followed by Toyota Camry in Altona. I'm sure some of you wouldn't give a toss but for me we not only lose automotive Australian manufacturing were losing OUR cars that have evolved into fantastic bang for buck machines. The famous Falcon 6cyc motor is as solid and better than a bimmer straight 6 and once a turbo was bolted to it in 2002 it went like a cut snake making higher output motors wishing they could perform the same. This is the most Australian car we have ever had due to its motor being made in Geelong and its a sad day. The Ford V8's have been famous from the '60's '70's delivering the mighty GTHO 4door that was ahead of its time and in the highs of the '90's some originals sold up to $1m. Now up to $850m. The last 5.0l Harrop supercharged V8 in the last LE (limited edition) Falcon Sprints split between 750 only turbo 6's in auto only and 750 V8's in manual/auto I expect will end up being collectables in the future. Falcon brought us the UTE and manymany 4door wagons - a car designed to do anything from work/daily to performance. RIP Ford Falcon thanks for the memories.

I feel really bad no-one has responded.
Do you know if the workers are able to be reskilled or can think beyond manufacturing to say, design, tech research etc? I know Bosch has come out with a driverless car to "rival" Tesla. This sort of disruption is what i'm optimistic about in Australias future.

He was a man of specific quirks. He believed that all meals should be earned through physical effort. He also contended, zealously like a drunk with a political point, that the third dimension would not be possible if it werent for the existence of water.

Tragic news, the loss of Innovation from Engineers and Technicians will be huge as wel as the side jobs created by the Car Industry (trucking, catering etc).
Shameful day for Australia.

Depends on the worker production line workers ,high chance they wont find meaningful work . If they were in the quality auditing ,process mapping or engineering space , there chances are a lot higher.

Very sad news, not just for the industry and jobs but also for fans of the Australian car scene. I don't know the first thing about it, but a whole culture's future has been cut off, and is entering a new phase.
At least for industry we're not entirely sunk, although we are way, way behind the curve in the transition from low value/high volume to high value/low volume manufacturing. Where's the Aussie Tesla, Boston Dynamics, or GoPro? There are actually components of NASA probes made in Australia, and, speaking for my own sector, some of the leading manufacturers in AV/video gear are based in Australia (Rode, Blackmagic, Atomos, etc), but much much more investment, education and leadership is needed for us to fully make the transition while keeping up levels of employment and quality of life that we are accustomed to in Australia, and the window in time with Asia and other places catching up is closing, and fast.
Sorry for being a bit off topic, definitely feel for anyone involved in the loss of the Australian sedan.

GM wanted to close holden down many years ago ( 2003 -2007 ).... Ford US were the same

Well, some of us give a fuck bohemia. I'm sure some poor families who just lost their lively hood would really appreciate your type of comment NOT. really what a P even IF a joke.. Ford have done as much as they can - 3yrs notice, helping as many workers as possible transitioning where suitable and some not. Some have been promoted/retained and some have re located to their Asia Pacific operations if they wished. Some, just great timing healthy redundancies retiring. Its the knock off effect that goes un noticed as well - local small suppliers are gone or doomed. So x % are unemployed. Next GM Elizabeth close's late next year and Toyotas Altona. This will really show issues into 2018 on.

The reality is that it's too expensive. It's not rocket science, our industry paid people too much money for the same thing someone else could make for less.
It's just how it is. I feel bad for the workers but the positive is that they at least knew what was coming.
