That was one short sugar hit. Ppl still thinking Bolt is actually going to be good for the league?

True - but they get massive national ratings.
Let’s not kid ourselves. For a season opener, a derby with an international marquee, that is a stinking result.

+xThe election coverage maybe but this is bad real bad. 69k Out of curiosity, are Foxtel ratings down for everything at this point? I'd imagine they are losing a lot of subscribers as time goes on

It looks at this early stage that the ratings slide continues from last year.Derbies are normally 100k.It's a real worry. These figures are with the precious clean air and normally represent the highest of the season. Who knows where everything heads from here.
Clearly with these figures the current Foxsports deal is overpriced.

Clearly with these figures the current Foxsports deal is overpriced. The shift from traditional television to internet/devices is on in earnest. The Fox deal is overpriced, but by the time the deal is u for renewal it will be a different marketplace.

A-LEAGUW VIEWING FIGURES: (from a league updates Facebook page)
Read this very carefully. Do not get caught up in the ratings debate this season. ALL Free to air networks and subscription tv broadcasters are unhappy with how ratings are calculated.
There is currently extensive work being undertaken to improve and provide a more accurate reading on actual viewers. Chances are we will not get an accurate reading on true A-League viewership due to many factors, however one primarily being the fact the new 'My Live Football App' data may not be provided.
The Melbourne derby apparently had only 69k which is one of the lowest rated derbies ever. In comparison, Adelaide vs Sydney attracted 67k.
However, with Foxsports giving money to the marquee fund and Keisuke Honda meeting that requirement, these viewing figures would be very alarming.
But again, accuracy is not provided for ONE, My live football app and foxsports apps on tablet phone etc.
We may also see a decrease due to competition for viewers, there may be a genuine decrease in viewers as some are more specific with what they watch and choose to watch.
Recent data from Foxtel indicates customers on average use only 8 channels and any standard package with add ons like Fox, provide substantially much more than 8 channels.
Viewing habits are changing and the way we view as well, be it through a mobile phone, tablet, pc etc.
Now this doesn't mean don't discount the viewing figures for foxsports figures are fairly accurate, but this is a watch this space... sport ok fta and stv may never be the same once all respective contracts conclude. Internet and subscriptions through applications are appearing more like the future.
I'd just like to say, just enjoy our sport for what it is. While viewing is an important factor, if tv dollars were to go down, our attendance would prove most important and lets be honest, watching the game is better live. Here's hoping football can evolve with these changes. A huge benefit to our game is the international exposure through deals struck to have our game broadcast in other countries. The new app is also a godsend and I've watched every ffa cup match and A-league match through it. I don't miss foxsports at all. If I want to discuss football I have you guys and I know exactly where else to go. Hope you all enjoyed round one and here's to a positive season.

Aren’t fox ratings accurate (cos they can count the number of actual subscribers watching a program) but FTA is less accurate (cos it relies on a limited number of survey watchers to calculate an estimate of viewing numbers)?
And hasn’t this always been the case?

Saturday nights are traditionally a very weak ratings time slot, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

No. STV ratings are done using a national panel of 2120 households.

There's no way only 70k watched the derby. I find it hard to believe 40k in the stadium and then double that plus 30k is all that watched it around the country?

Cast your minds back to when JON was in charge he held constant media door steps on the A-League and when Gallop was popular he also did constant door steps. With the dye cast, re a new board, before season start, Gallop should have set all guns blazing and fronted the media.... me thinks FFA management were scared of questions pertaining to the change in the board which could have been answered simply by saying both the existing and new boards would want to launch the season as best we can. This pattern has been the same over this and the previous 2 seasons.

This will get brutal when cricket season starts, worse yet the bbl will deliver monster ratings on fox so the comparisons will be ugly.

The comparisons with BBL and AFL/NRL are not really relevant. They are the three big draw cards and football isn’t.
All the figures over the weekend compare favourably to SuperRugby and are generally double NBL which gets more favourable media coverage than football.
There was nothing preseason to suggest viewing would go up, those that thought Honda would help were mistaken.
An independent A League needs to take charge of promoting itself and get rid of fuckwits like O’Rourke and Gallop. Fox we seem to be stuck with but their coverage is shit and doing nothing to draw people in on an expensive package.
Thankfully the football was good in most games and attendances pretty decent.

Still people think it's possible to 'promote' a crap product in some new way that people will be repetitively hoodwinked into watching it. Gallop maybe a stooge and O'Rourke a Used Pepsi Salesman, but there's a limit to what even they can flog. It's the 'product' that has to change. #FullPyramidNow
