i think canberra is a stuff up
they should build a tiny shed

What do you think about the FourFourTwo article Three New Grounds For Oz World Cup?
NEW stadiums will be built in Perth, Canberra and the Blacktown area of Sydney with nine others upgraded should Australia succeed in landing the 2018 or 2022 World Cup.

Have your say.

The bottom bowl of the AO development appears to be retractable stands. If that is the case then there is a legacy for football. I also understand that their are works proposed at at least one other venue in Adelaide as a training ground.

I’m glad we won’t have to suffer the indignation of holding a world cup without the national capitals involvement. Pity we have to endure the embarrassment of having a domestic league without a team from the capital city though.

Melbourne to be bigger then Sydney by 2018/2022.

Yet we have 1 stadia, and they have 3..

It's just that Sydney has the FFA, Lowy and the Rugby's that have been a little nicer towards the whole thing. Melbourne has Dick-head Dimetrieu (however you spell it... who really cares) and the very affraid AFL being well... dickheads.

Everywhere I look I see this nonsense about Melbourne being bigger than Sydney by 2022. This story was put out in 2008 when The Vics updated their population projections. They compared their 2008 projections with the ABS projections based on the 2006 Census. At the time it was correct, however, the latest projections for Sydney issued by the NSW Planning Dept have Sydney's population still 450k greater than Melbourne's out as far as 2036. Sydney had a big slump in growth between 2001 and 2006 but since 2006 has returned to its normal growth rate.

the proposed redevelopment of skilled stadium in geelong actually doesn't look too bad.
they'll be building the seats in and its almost rectangular..to a point where the corner of the pitch actually cuts into the stands.

Again Brookvale Oval misses out on funding lol. What a venue that would have been for visiting teams; the beautiful Northern Beaches. I suppose transport would have been an issue. Would have given the gov't reason to finally build the long overdue Railway to the Peninsula. If anybody wants to get up me about this post, I'm only kidding. What more can they do with stadium australia? It held 110,000 with the end stands then they demolished those. Are they going to waste money building new stands again then ripping them out. I favour building new end stands and keeping them to maintain capacity at over 100,000.

So if we do get the world cup would a Canberra team occupy the new stadium. You may as well. No point converting it into a shopping centre.

Yes it does. Ian Rowden was quoted in the herald saying he'd love for the team to play there. It will be reduced to 26k after the wc which is a perfect size and we would be the only tenants.

Lol... the development of energy australia stadium in newcastle will upset many bogans... they will never go to knights games again cause they don't have the "hill" where they can sit...

Oh, and hindmarsh is actually a good stadium. I went there for the first time on wednesday night for the acl (just moved to adelaide) and its really well set out. You could even develop that possibly to a bigger capacity (i don't know how much room they would need to build up. Adelaide oval would be slightly more convenient though

I forgot to say that hindmarsh actually feels like a football stadium... kind of reminded me of the small european grounds as opposed to our multi purpose stadiums we have here which don't always suit football

The main problem is the WA government will be involved with the Subiaco upgrade, if they had to build a sandcastle down the beach they couldnt do it within budget let alone properly

Whether we win the WC bid or not, one thing Australia urgently requires is a third and fourth media voice, independent newspapers, because all that Murdochs newpapers erve us on a daily basis is an entre of scandal and trivia, a main course of hollywood gossip and b..shit and desert of Rugny League and AFL....that is what you and i are forced to consumer every single day....that is enough to spew on....please wake up Australia....we are not living in the dark ages anymore..we need choice...football needs its own voice its own newspaper support

All this debate about population size is ridiculous.

So Melbourne will have more people than Sydney eh? Just like Mexico City has more people than Sydney too?

Point is. It's completely irrelevant.

More and more I get the feeling Australia will not win a World Cup this time around.
2018 is almost 99% certain to go to Europe and I reckon the USA will get there for 2022.
Seeing this stadium story makes me not so worried about that. Football deserves more quality stadiums in each state (not basically providing new stadiums for the AFL).
With the Force and Glory in Perth, WA can surely justify a decent stadium of around 40-50k in the next 20 years. Maybe in that time the Rebels, Storm, Victory and Heart can do enough to warrant expanding the Bubble Dome (even though the stupid architects made that roof that'll cost a motsa to take take down again).
Disappointing that the World Cup will basically benefit AFL more than football under this current plan.

It's abit difficult to actually have more than 2 in Melbourne, because you've got the G... Etihad was the peace deal with the AFL which had to be made, and the Bubbledome can't now be extended as originally intended because they'll have to dismantle the Dome and then reconstruct it which was the longest part of the actual construction... unless you build another purpose built arena in melbourne i don't see how it's possible....

BUT, the travel distance from the centre of Melbourne to Geelong is what 45mins-1hour (a rough estimation from the bus trip from Southern Cross station to Avalon airpost which isn't far from Geelong)... and you compare that to the travel distance from the SFS to Blacktown is roughly the same, probably more actually.

Victoria could have potentially had Geelong, MCG and Etihad but you had the AFL hold it to ransom and that's the result you get

Legacy wise a stadia in Melbourne dosen't really warrant it... there was a large push for a highly developed Campbelltown, the NRL was heavily pushing for it in there negotiations so the Wests Tigers could use it as their full time base, but the FFA have steaked there claim in the war for Western Sydney where Blacktown is the epicenter... it's a 15 minute walk from the station, hey it's alot better than having it in Blacktown than a place like Rustenberg is you want to compare our bid to SA

Ah I think the "Staff Writer" got 'Blacktown' confused with 'Bankstown,' because the latter certainly IS in Sydney's South West, but the former, where the WC will be ofcourse, is actually located west of Parramatta, which is more Sydney's greater west, or North West even.
