if australia manage to do it, the group will be super interesting. all teams on 3 points going into the final match... crazy What do you think about the FourFourTwo article The Door Opens For Australia...? AUSTRALIA must win against Ghana to level Group D on three points apiece after Serbia humbled 10-man Germany with a 1-0 win in a major group stage upset.Have your say.

Makes it easier and harder, if we beat Ghana and Serbia yeah we are in but if we win one and draw one, given results our way or not those 4 oals will kill us.

the most positive thing that comes out of this, i think, is that germany will definetly be playing to win against ghana in round 3. Other than that, the fact remains we need to win both games. Go socceroos!!

the most yellow cards in a game I have ever seen.Australia must exploit this and not concede silly yellows or reds against Ghana.THAT is how we can win.Germany were soft tonight but kept up the fight, credit to them.Serbia's defence was a brick wall.Australia doesn't have the arsenal to break that down easily. That ref was a joke..again.Credit to Serbia though.Good game.

Now it will be impossible to qualify to the round of 16 with a draw against Serbia (due to our terrible goal difference).
Equation very simple for Australia. Beat Ghana and beat Serbia. Drop points in any game and we are gone.

Sigh* This is getting worse and worse. Obviously a German victory would have been more beneficial for us. Now that Serbia wins, we need to win both games or our tournament is over. This is of course we thrash either Serbia or Ghana by 4 or 5 goals, which is extremely unlikely.

Bit hard not to concede yellows when the refs are complete idiots. Some of those yellows given were rubbish. The Serbia were definently taking advantage of this.

how does this 'open the door' for the socceroos? It was clearly preferable for Germany to win, allowing us the possibility of a win and a draw to qualify.

Statistically, Serbia's win was the worst result for us, so the headline is a little misleading.
One positive is that if we win the next two games now, goal difference won't matter (before this game there was a chance we finish on 6 pts and still miss out).
There is one other combination for us: if we draw against Ghana, Ghana beat Germany, and we beat Serbia, it would finish Ghana 7 pts, Aus 4 pts, Germany & Serbia 3 pts.

Germany were certainly not up for that like they were against us, they were shocking.

The best possible result for the Socceroos. All we need to do now is win our next 2 games and we are through. We don't need any favors from anyone now. It is in our own hands. Work it out people. If we beat Ghana and Serbia we are through now. Had Germany won tonight we could have missed out even if we had won our next 2 games. C'mon boys. Beat Ghana and Serbia and we are through!!

My god talk about negativity!! Get over yourselves we have just as much chance now than anyone. I believe in the boys they will come out and show that they can play and win the next two. Support your COUNTRY!!! Have a bit of faith!!

Serbia looked ordinary, again. The only thing that worries me about this result is that it will now give the Serbs a bit of confidence. Even though they were bloody ordinary.

ton.of.bricks Well I agree that it's all in our hand, it's not the best result for us.
the best results for us was a draw between Germany and Serbia.
That would have made 2 victories guaranteed a place to the round of 16 as well as open the possibility of a draw against Serbia to get us through
Nevertheless it really doesn't matter as what's done is done now. Australia needs two victories.
We can do it

How was the referee poor. Klose deserved to be sent off for two silly tackles. If that was Australia out there, youd talk about what a good call it was.

I agree with Denis Law there. Germany were an entertaining side to watch and Podolski had enough chances to win this match for Germany even with 10 men
Although after podolski missed the penalty, that pretty much demoralised the German side and they weren't threatening afterwards (I guess this was the risk of selecting such a young squad)

The referee showed early that he was not going to take any shit. It was good to see him giving yellow for "professional" fouls that broke up breakaway attacks. He should have refereed the Spain Switzerland match.

What I meant to say was, it was better for us for Germany to lose rather than win agaisnt Serbia. Now we go through if we beat Ghana and Serbia regardless of our negative for and against goal difference. If we can't beat Ghana and Serbia then Pim Verbeek can go and get fucked for mine.

We can do it If we can beat Ghana, we will get through. Especially if the Serbs are going to do the right and fair thing, and give us a blatant handball in the box as well. How did Vidic stay on the pitch. The rules state that an intentional handball in the box is a straight red card!! But we may not even need the gift. In both games so far the Serbs have seriously struggled to keep control of the ball. Which is surprising, given that their coach was very successful in getting his Spanish club teams to do just that. They have looked utterly toothless in attack, mostly coming back to the fact that they cant keep possesion. C'mon boys. If you need to think that the Aussie public has turned on you to give you more motivation, then so be it. I dont care how, or why you do it. But we MUST BEAT GHANA!!!!!

Wait a minute talking about two wins.
The team that beat us 4 nil was beaten 1 nil and the team we play tomorrow beat the team that beat Germany, so we are at the bottom of the food chain.
Would be a fantastic result if we beat Ghana and turned the last round into two semifinals for the top two spots in the group, but lets not be unrealistic in our expectations and beating both Ghana and Serbia in 5 days with an out of form disgruntled team is a big big ask.

If we don't qualify for the knockout stage now we can't blame bad luck. It's all in our hands. If we can't beat Ghana and Serbia with our European Socceroos, then let's pack up, cop it sweet and go home. And shoot Pim Verbeek on the plane.

A lot of the big European clubs are looking at him, and he has some good pace, and some good skill, but his decision making is poor. Most of the second half, the Germans played with either 2 or 3 defenders only. And what did he do with all that space?? Nothing!!!! It can be argued that Serbia did not need to attack (although a very dangerous strategy) in the second half, but a team with only 10 men on the pitch, with 4 of the 10 forwards, made the Serbs look almost pedestrian. As I said, if we beat Ghana, we will go through.

Well, if it looked difficult before, it's near impossible now for me. I wish not to be, just telling it how it is. Serbia played very well. Very smart, and Germany got fustrated. A few too many cards for my liking, but Germany self destructed in 2 parts, when they got the red card and when they missed the penalty. Germany were looking really strong up untill that missed penalty, had they scored, i reckon they could have gone on to win it. Bloody Germans. I reckon it's all a conspiracy, masterminded by Pim Verbeek to make sure we don't get into the next round of the world cup.
WOLLONGONG WOLVES FOR A-LEAGUE EXPANSION!
