More Sardonic than Ironic.

I've got limited sympathy when speed was clearly a major contributing factor. The car literally disintegrated on impact.

Joan Fontaine Dies At 96

By Luke Ryan Baldock on December 16, 2013@LukeRyanBaldock

Not long after the loss of acting titan Peter O’Toole, we must now regretfully announce the death of Academy Award winning actress Joan Fontaine at the age of 96. Fontaine was best known for her work with Alfred Hitchcock, a partnership that saw her nominated for Best Actress for my presonal Hitchcock favourite, REBECCA, only to go on and win the next year, in 1942, for Hitchcock’s SUSPICION. She would pick up another nomination in 1944 for her performance in THE CONSTANT NYMPH. In 1956 she starred in Fritz Lang’s BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT and took on another memorable role a decade later with THE WITCHES, her last big screen appearance. The 60s, 70s, and 80s saw her turn her attention to TV work, with her final work being the 1994 TV movie, GOOD KING WENCESLAS.

Sister to Olivia de Havilland, Joan Fontaine was born Joan de Beauvoir de Havilland, in Tokyo on 22nd October 1917. Fontaine’s father was a doctor who had a practice in Japan, but it was Joan and Olivia’s poor health that saw them return to California with their mother. Their mother soon passed on the acting bug she had as a child, and the two sisters set about on two truly remarkable careers. While Olivia made a name for herself on stage, Joan returned to Japan to attend the American school in Tokyo. Upon her return to the US, she focused her attention on acting, but refused to use the family name so as not to ride or disrupt her sister’s success. After minor roles in a number of films, she found herself sat next to David O. Selznick at a dinner party, the legendary producer who had recently worked with her sister in GONE WITH THE WIND, and who had just picked up the rights to Daphne Du Maurier’s novel, REBECCA. Fontaine was asked to audition, and the rest is history.

Joan Fontaine is said to have died peacefully at her Californian home on the morning of Sunday 15th December 2013. Our thoughts at THN go out to her family and friends, and we would like to say thanks for some incredible performances in some amazing movies.

James Avery, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air's 'Uncle Phil', dies aged 68

Actor James Avery, who played Will Smith's 'Uncle Phil' in hit 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, has died at the age of 68.

He died on New Year's Eve after developing complications in the wake of recent open heart surgery, his publicist Cynthia Snyder said.

With a deep baritone voice, Avery regularly played judges, professors or doctors in TV shows, including LA Law and Grey's Anatomy.

His first big-screen role was an uncredited part in 1980s classic The Blues Brothers, and throughout his career he did extensive voice work, including on animated projects.

But he was best known for his role as the wealthy uncle in the TV show which catapulted Smith to stardom in the '90s.

The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ran for six seasons between 1990 and 1996, and centred around Smith's escapades after being sent from Philadelphia to live with his wealthy relatives in California.

Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Uncle Phil's son Carlton in the show, paid tribute to his fellow actor.

"The world has lost a truly special man," he wrote on Facebook.

"Even though he played my father on TV, he was a wonderful father figure to me in life. He will be deeply missed."

Born in Virginia and raised in New Jersey, Avery had worked until September, shooting the Zach Braff film Wish I Was Here. The film will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this month.

Avery died in hospital in Glendale outside Los Angeles, Ms Snyder said in a statement to AFP.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Barbara, his mother Florence, and his stepson Kevin Waters.

The Everly Brothers : 'Two voices in seamless harmony whose musical influence was immeasurable'

As Phil Everly of The Everly Brothers dies, Neil McCormick pays tribute to some of the best harmony singing pop has ever had to offer

Perhaps the saddest thing about Phil Everly’s death is knowing his voice will never align with his brother Don’s again. The Everlys were the essence of harmony, the most human and potent of all musical techniques, two voices singing complimentary melodies so perfectly joined in rhythm, phrasing, nuance and tone that they blend seamlessly into a new melody, almost as if the two voices don’t so much become one as three. It is, at its best, something supernatural. And the Everlys were the best.
They had the advantage of being brothers, the very shape of their voices a genetic match, and all the experience of their lives contributing to this near psychic mirroring. Don took the low parts, Phil took the high, baritone and tenor, singing at intervals a third apart, and conjuring up what Graham Nash has called “a ghost harmonic”.

P
There was always something spooky about the Everlys, with their dreamy looks and ethereal singing. They arrived in the public eye on the first wave of rock and roll but by adding the plaintive lilt of country and the spectral harmonies of folk they expanded and transformed this crash of sexual, rhythmic delight into something richly romantic, opening up lush new vistas of pop sound. The songs that made them famous resonate down the years: Bye Bye Love, Wake Up Little Susie, All I Have to Do is Dream, Wishing, Cathy’s Clown, So Sad, Walk Right Back, Crying in the rain.

The effect they had on other musicians was immeasurable. The harmonic blend of The Beatles was really John Lennon and Paul McCartney chasing that Everly Brothers sound, Simon and Garfunkel started out as an Everly mimicking duo, Alan Clarke and Graham Nash of The Hollies thought of themselves as a British Everlys and Nash carried that across the Atlantic to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, joining the dots with the sunshine harmonies of the Seventies west coast singer-songwriter generation, from The Mamas and Papas to Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris (who recreated the Everlys’ version of Love Hurts with a sexual edge) to the banked harmonies of the Eagles. Wherever you hear harmonies being sung in pop music, you can hear the Everly Brothers.

We know that it wasn’t always easy being an Everly Brother. They grew up singing with their father and mother, performing onstage when the younger brother Phil was just five years of age, and were bound together for life, professionally as well as personally, expected to join in sweet harmony even when they weren’t getting along. There were long periods when they sang their parts but wouldn’t talk to each other on stage, and a ten year split from 1973-83 when each performed solo. Phil scored a UK top ten hit, She Means Nothing to Me, with Cliff Richard in 1983 (because even solo, he was still singing harmony). But family bonds are strong, and music heals wounds. They got back together because they belonged together. And even now that Phil has finally left the stage, all of us touched by their magic will be able to hear them singing in our dreams.

Just late last year, easy listening jazz chantuese Norah Jones and Green Day punk star Billie Joe Armstrong released a modern updating of the Everlys 1958 classic Songs Our Daddy Taught Us. They called it Foreverly. This is music that will be passed on as long as there are voices to sing it.

Professor From Gilligan's Island Dead at 89

34 minutes ago BY TMZ STAFF

The actor who played the Professor in "Gilligan's Island" has died ... TMZ has learned.

Russell Johnson, who played Professor Roy Hinkley, died of natural causes at his home in Washington.

Dawn Wells, who played Mary Ann, just posted on Facebook, "My 2 favorite people are now gone. The professor past (sic) away this morning. My heart is broken."

The other person who died is Bob Denver, who played Gilligan. He died in 2005.

Johnson was on the show from 1964 to 1967. Johnson was not in the original opening of the show. He and Mary Ann were referred to as "The rest." But Denver insisted that they be included and that happened later.

Wells went on: "Russell was a true gentleman, a good father, a great friend, and 'the rest.'"

Johnson was married -- this was his third wife. He passed away in hospice, surrounded by his wife and 2 kids.

Johnson was 89.

The only surviving members of the original cast are Mary Ann and Ginger, played by Tina Louise.

Philip Seymour Hoffman, 46, found dead in Manhattan apartment after apparent overdose

7 MINUTES AGO FEBRUARY 03, 2014 7:21AM

Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead of an apparent drug overdose.

OSCAR-WINNING actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has been found dead of an apparent drug overdose - in the bathroom with a hypodermic needle still in his arm - inside a Manhattan home, police say.
A personal assistant found Hoffman’s body in an apartment in the West Village neighbourhood of New York about 11.30am local time (3.30am AEDT), sources told the New York Post.
Heroin was found in the apartment and the star was fully clothed when found, law-enforcement sources said.
"It’s pretty apparent that it was an overdose," an official told The New York Times. “The syringe was in his arm.”
Cops are at the scene and are investigating, sources said.

Hoffman is survived by partner Mimi O'Donnell and their three children, son Cooper Alexander, 10, and daughters Tallulah, 7, and Willa, 5.
His family released a statement, saying simply: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil ...This is a tragic and sudden loss."
Fans have also begun to leave flowers outside Hoffman's New York apartment.
The 46-year-old has admittedly struggled with drug addiction in the past, and reportedly checked himself into rehab last year for heroin abuse.

Hoffman, who won a Best Actor Oscar for the 2005 film Capote, spent 10 days in a detox facility for heroin use in May last year.
At the time, TMZ reported Hoffman had struggled with substance abuse in the past but kicked the habit for 23 years.
His relapse started with prescription pills and escalated to snorting heroin.
Hoffman told TMZ the heroin use lasted about a week before he realised he needed help and checked into a detox facility.

He had credited "a great group of friends and family" for helping him seek treatment to get better.
Hoffman, best known recently for his role as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, also starred in Moneyball, Doubt and The Big Lebowski.
He was born in New York State. He began his acting career in 1991, and the following year started to appear in films.
He had supporting roles in a number of critically-acclaimed movies throughout the 1990s, including Boogie Nights and Magnolia. His growing reputation as a character actor reached its peak with his award-winning 2005 portrayal of the US writer Truman Capote.

He also had a successful stage career, directing and appearing in a multiple Broadway productions, including a turn in 2012 in Death of a Salesman, for which he earned a Tony award nomination.

In 2010 he directed the Sam Shepard play True West for the Sydney Theatre Company, at the invitation of directors Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton. During his Sydney stay he was a guest of businessman James Packer.
Last month, Hoffman appeared out of it at the Sundance Film Festival at a party for his movie God’s Pocket, witnesses told The Post.
He seemed “slightly disheveled and pasty” and initially declined interviews while his co-stars, Christina Hendricks and John Slattery, talked to the media, witnesses said.
A rep said at the time, “He needed a minute and didn’t feel like coming down yet.”

Later, Hoffman seemed more relaxed and agreed to do some interviews but would only talk about the movie. He was later spotted at another party chatting to actor Sam Rockwell.
Speaking at the London Critics' Circle Film Awards in central London, John Hurt - who starred with Seymour Hoffman in 2003 film Owning Mahowny - said: "It's a devastating loss. His contribution was massive."
Frozen actor Josh Gad summed up the feelings of many on Twitter: "My heart is broken, my mind is racing. My idol has died and I am so confused and sad by this tragic loss. RIP"
"We lost one of the greats today," wrote Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul. "Philip Seymour Hoffman RIP my friend. You will be missed always and forever."

Comic veteran Steve Martin said he was "shocked" to learn of Hoffman's death. "If you missed him as Willy Loman, you missed a Willy Loman for all time," he tweeted.
Whoopi Goldberg also expressed her surprise on Twitter, saying she hoped it was a hoax. She also called him a "truly great actor".
"Such shocking & sad news," wrote Ricky Gervais. "RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman. One of the greatest actors of a generation and a sweet, funny & humble man."
Zach Braff called Hoffman "one of the greatest actors of our lifetime," while Rose McGowan described him as "a giant talent touched by fire".
Elijah Wood said he was "heartbroken and shocked" by the news. "What a true loss. rest in peace, Philip Seymour Hoffman."
A woman answering the phone at Hoffman’s New York production company declined to comment to The New York Times. "I don’t have a comment at this time on that, thank you," she said.
