This would definitely seem to narrow down the list.

I think you're right.

This part  "coached at a similar sized club to Roar (or bigger), whether they had experience in a salary capped competition" would seem to point to the MLS guy.

“This part "coached at a similar sized club to Roar (or bigger), whether they had experience in a salary capped competition" would seem to point to the MLS guy.”

This actually applies to the MLS guy as well as Fowler (he’s coaching at LFC and Fowlers played in a salary capped league.

Yeah, I thought that later. It doesn't actually say that you had to be the head coach of a club. You could have coached the youth team at Sydney FC and still ticked that box.

So if Kurz were to sign for Roar , how would that go for conflict of interest as roar play reds in last game of season ,
Somehow I don’t think Marko is coming North .

I’d say Kurz has zero chance of coming to Roar now .... unless candidates 1, 2, 3 AND Miron and his flying lizards all turn them down.

This game of charades has been going on for a month and someone (presumably Kurz Agent?) has been feeding Val at the Advertiser stuff about him coming to Roar to force an agenda - that BS is not what we need

Yeah, can’t afford another dud coach.

If you take the name “Robbie Fowler” out of it you’ve got an ex-player, one who’s played in the A League, and has spent several years getting his Pro Licence and Roar are prepared to give him a go. That’s okay.

There’s risk associated with that, and is this the right time to take that risk after two tough years under JA?

Putting Fowlers name back in there complicates things.

There’s no doubt if this was Thomas Broich following the same path the move would be welcomed, so Fowlers name is part of the problem. Hopefully Roar weren’t seduced by his commercial potential and focussed purely on Fowler the coach.

Yes I think many thinking people are concerned at this ...part of me loves the idea of having a star player who may have good overseas contacts in charge .
He could still be a good manager if he is smart .His lack of coaching experience could be offset by him making sure he has someone very knowledgable backing him up .
He will need to realise what he does not know about coaching and be a good manager instead .
He has shown he is a lot smarter than he appeared during his playing career by being a successful business man.
Many of the traits for that are the same as what is needed to manage a team so I am hopeful he is more than just an good ex footballer .

However...my logical side is concerned about whether he recognizes his coaching deficiencies and thinks he can coach just because he was good at putting the ball in the net.

I have seen people use Gerard's reasonably successful start at Rangers as proof that Fowler can be a good coach.
Gerard was a midfield player known for his football vision and he ran his teams . He had a totally different football learning curve to Fowler...a very good striker who was focussed solely on getting goals and not on reading the opposition team as Gerard did constantly.
We still have no real idea if this is true but where there is smoke there is often fire .....we will see.

If nothing else it shows that if a privately owned stadium existed that could seat 20k,more than likley it would get heavily booked.

in ordinary circumstances, Fowler would be great, but current team form (not necesarilly makeup imo) would make an experienced coach preferable.

The perfect situation would be if Fowler bought an experienced Liverpool coach or coaching team with him.  Imagine if his job pitch included signing Kenny Dalglish as assistant! In any case, if he does bring an experienced coaching team with him i think it still more than offsets any risk with him (i am assuming they have looked at the coaching he has done with the juniors and seen that he has done well).  Especially if we sign some hidden gems and benefit a little from his relationship with Liverpool scouts.

Saying all this, a Frank Farina /John Aloisi Style job for the boys situation might actually fit in with the Roar Culture and might be okay we could see something like:
Forwards Coach: Michael Owen Midfield Coach Steve McManaman Defensive Coach Rigobert Song Goalkeeper Coach Bruce Grobelaar.  Win lose or draw, that is the type of coaching team i coudl get behind.

@Bender Parma

One of the things Pourre talked about was the new HC would only get to hire his assistant. This was designed to stop someone coming in and hiring all their mates (ala Aloisi).

So Steff in the Football Dept no longer reports to the men’s team HC for example, the Goalkeeping coach is part of the football Dept so can’t easily be moved out - same with fitness and conditioning, physio, medical, etc.

Basically the football department now looks like a department and not servants to the men’s HC.

If Fowler comes in he’s got the choice of retaining DD or bringing someone else in. Like you is hope he’d bring someone else in to complement his skills.

I quite liked that article, although it stopped way short of being a full analysis:

“But as a coach? It’s nearly a complete unknown”

>> unknown to who? Why didn’t the author contact the LFC Academy and ask them what they know about Fowler the coach?

“While his time coaching in England looks nice on paper, the role and workload of an academy coach is vastly different to that of a head coach”

>>> no shit Sherlock. And yet many coaches make the transition successfully all the time. Funnily enough LFC used to be the masters of this transition (their success ended when they stopped doing it in fact)

“One of the few ways appointing Fowler can be construed positively is the leverage he could potentially bring in attracting marquee signings to the club”

>>> not marquee signings ffs ... could he bring 5 quality visa signings to the club???

“In a climate where interest in the A-League is appearing to decline, the publicity a name like Fowler’s could bring to both the club and league is also appealing”

>>> I don’t give a fuck. Can he coach is the only question that matters!!

“Whether he fits into Brisbane’s timeline as they return to being competitive is another legitimate question”

Correct. Can Fowler do what Ange, Poppa and Muscat did in their first gig in the HAL???

“rolling the dice on someone like Fowler makes some sense (although rolling the dice on a young NPL-based coach makes easily as much sense)”

>>> it makes NO sense rolling the dice on an NPL coach unless they can demonstrate how they can secure five quality visa players.

There are certainly cons to appointing someone like Fowler, but there are definite pros as well. We need to be realistic about what can be done with the resources available in the A-League. We are never going to get a big name, with great pedigree and experience, who is guaranteed to dominate all other teams. Concessions need to be made somewhere, whether that be in terms of star power and ability to attract players, having a great coaching support network, or having a huge amount of coaching experience.
We can't have it all, but we might get lucky. Imagine if we do appoint Fowler and he turns out to be an absolutely brilliant coach. Roar would look like geniuses.

The reason clubs do not spend big money on a top coach is simple ...top coaches are used to using top players.
So they will not come to a league with ordinary players .
Whilst we have a salary cap we can not attract any top players .
What people have not thought of is that getting rid of the salary cap will also allow us to get better coaches .

Daggers scored a brace against South Korea.  Haven't seen the goals, so can't comment on the quality, but it's a shame he can't repeat that form for the club.  Good on him, I hope he brings the form back to the club.
