The loaning issue I was talking about BTW was a fan asking the CEO why Glory players weren't randomly drafted to state league clubs in the off-season.

Melbourne Heart loaned a couple of lads to South for the first half of last season - no insurance issues. South also had a kid from Gold Coast United on loan. Richmond has Hoffman on loan from Heart. I'm sure there were a few more around. So the insurance issue is a bit of a red herring.

Quite possibly. But Heart loaned out younger blokes, yeah? I doubt loaning someone like Makarounas, Taggart or Amphlett would be an issue - I reckon loaning Dodd, Sterjovski, Miller would be.

I doubt Dodd, Sterjovski or Miller would accept loan deals to the state leagues, nor do I think there would be any benefit to Glory in loaning them out (it's not like a state league club could cover their wages in any way).

Makarounas, Taggart and Amphlett are exactly the kinds of players who would benefit from playing in a more 'competitive' environment year round.

NTC plays in split state league reserves in this state.

It is usually one of the top teams.

It seems to be the right level for them.

In theory, yes, but very hard to make it work in practice. A-League teams will only loan out fringe players, and the state league teams will likely have those players train with them for only a session a week, if that. In addition, a lot of people are wary about the worth of having a player who is only going to be around for half a season, and especially not the business end of the season.

Buying facilities though is important for a club. A few clubs seem to lack a dedicated training base.

The one key thing that many of the ex NSL clubs have that many A-League clubs don't is real estate.

Seven years on, and it is now looking like the HAL clubs are beginning to put down roots in their local communities. There is no one way of doing this effectively - in some cases buying a SL club may be worthwhile, in others a social club, in others again the entire competition, in others still junior competitions.

Overall to me it shows a good trend - ie, that clubs are looking to do more than just skim off the top, and are realising the true value of community engagement. We won't see the full ROI for another decade or so, but the signs are promising.

Let's remember OTOH that HAL clubs are not bottomless pits by any stretch of the imagination, and they have to be smart in how they use their very limited resources.

Ditto South - we didn't sell out when Crazy John wanted to buy the club, no reason we'd sell now... But there are many smaller clubs who would probably welcome the investment, which could only raise the standard of the state leagues.

Rumour has it that Perth Glory is planning to purchase Inglewood United, their stadia, facilities, clubrooms, etc to establish a presence for itself in the local leagues and get some of the more talented WA lads in full-time training with an eye to the A-League in future.

Now from what I understand Adelaide United has already done something similar with state league facilities in SA (though I'm happy to be corrected)

What do people think of this, and who is a prime candidate for a takeover in your neck of the woods?

Adelaide united hasn't done anything like that and they were actually against putting any a-league representative in the state leagues and preferred to connect with the existing state league clubs [much smarter]. To take over a state league club kills the existing club and associates the a-league club with just one team which will then be seen as a rival rather than a representative of all the state league clubs.

I don't think we will bother with a piddly state league team at the moment. Although, there are still rumours that Clem Jones Group will buy a minor stake in Roar, so I guess that would then put the Brisbane Strikers under the club's umbrella while the club itself sits under the Bakrie umbrella (if you know what I mean)

Would be your loss. Perth investing in youth is where it's at, not piddly second division Belgian league teams with 35 year old players.

I'd welcome any voluntary investment by the A-League in any state league team that was willing. Positives outweigh any negatives.
