Granville District Soccer Football Association set goal for cheaper player fees

Soccer24 Nov 11 @ 07:42am by Steven Deare

SOCCER players should not raise their hopes of paying cheaper fees in future, although the Granville District Soccer Football Association is trying to make it happen.

Football NSW recently announced it would reduce player registration fees. The state body said the reduction for six- to nine-year-olds - and its decision not to increase fees on other ages - would keep the sport affordable for all.

However, Granville’s immediate past president Howard Groom said those reduced charges formed only a marginal part of a club’s registration fee.

“It’s only four dollars here, seven dollars there,” he said.

“The Football NSW component is not a large component. There are other costs the association incurs, such as running a NSW Premier League team.

“And in the absence of sponsorship, that means finding funding from the grassroots.”

In better news for soccer players and parents however, Groom said the association was working to find other ways of funding its Premier League team, Parramatta FC.

“The association is going to work hard on attracting sponsorship for the Premier League club and that can reduce costs for (other) clubs,” he said.

Some associations impose a $15 levy on player registrations in order to fund their state league clubs, but Granville has decided against that move.

Tertiary students, however, will see cheaper fees in 2012. Football NSW has reintroduced discounts for players who study.

Joffa,

I remember you asking me about Blacktown's building fund listed in it's fees schedule. At the time I had no idea but it turns out it was related to building blacktown football park which is now home to the newly promoted NSW Premier league side blacktown spartans.

I believe the granville association club members voted against the $15 levy on it's grassroots members.

It's now becoming more common for Associations to take charge of clubs in the higher state leagues but without sponsorship associations have to use grass roots funds. Granville posted a loss of 58k last season since taking over Parra FC compared to an 18k profit the season before when it didn't own Parra FC.

Howard is an absolute legend! And GDSFA is one of the oldest associations in the country. The problem lies with the Auburn/Lidcombe clubs that make the comp shit to play in. Howard is a hero at North Rocks Soccer Club, where he turned the club into one of the biggest in Granville with around 880 registered players before he took over at Granville.

The hills district part of Granville is a pleasure to play in... the rest of it is always tough, that said you do get some great teams from further west than the hills section.

On the fees issue, i'm not sure it's too big a deal, but i think the government must start putting subsidies on sport. We are a fat country and we need to do everything we can to stop that!

As has been the case for 20+ years.

Gutless GDSFA just refuse to acknowledge the problem.

No wonder no fucker wants to ref in this association.

This year Auburn has been given to show cause why they should be allowed to play in GDSFA and Auburn have decided to move to Sydney Amateurs. So the rumour goes...

Lidcombe have cleaned up there act. No problem with Lidcombe club/players last season.

This is how I understand it...

I believe in 2007 Melita eagles lost their licence and it was the GDSFA who came to the rescue by providing the criteria necessary to remain in state league. Otherwise Melita would have dissappeared off the map. The GDSFA has been the reason Melita still exists today as Parra FC. The GDSFA also in doing so has gone from profit to big losses.

It's easy to criticise the GDSFA and point the finger of blame than it is for Melita to take responsiblity for their own actions.

Anyway I'm glad that the GDSFA has taken the view that Parra FC should survive on it's own existence rather than taxing association players. $15.oo is a bit steep. Blacktown tax $4.oo per association player for it's spartans sides.

I see no issues with Associations subracting a small fee for their rep sides as this provides a pathway from grassroots to rep football via Association owned rep football. As long as the fee is very small.

this is the way i see the parramatta fc and melita issue. note: i could be wrong though
there is melita (the organisation) and then there is the football club.
the organisation had a 99 yr (or some other very large number) lease on melita staduim.
obviously when melita (the organisation) owned melita (the football club) there was no issues with the football club playing at melita staduim.
when PCYC took over the football club, then melita (the organisation) agreed to allow PCYC Parramatta FC (as they changed the name of the football club) to play at melita staduim.
however then the GDSFA came and took control of the football club from PCYC. as a result they automatically assumed they had the right to play at the staduim. Melita, the organisation, was opposed to this and thus things got dirty. then went to court. both sides played dirty, the GDSFA kicked out some board members of melita, the organisation, out of the ground when they went to watch the football team, as well as the GDSFA cancelled a Maltese fun day that was planned at Melita Staduim.
note: i could be wrong with this though

That sounds about right with what i've heard. Gutless, and the problem clubs have too many officials with too much power in the association. I'm not playing Granville this year, but i'd still be interested to see if they cut the whole south western part of the league and made it a more hills league. But you make a good point about refs, it's just a joke really.

I'm very interested as to who you are Judy Free! You are clearly someone who played at a decent level as a junior (15 years ago?), but i'm guessing you dropped off to playing amateur footy? An a hills kid at that i'm thinking?

The subject has been on and off the table for eons. Not likely to ever happen, as you take one or two of the biggest Hills clubs out of the comp (Winston, Castle Hill etc) and GDSFA crumbles. Sydney Branch won't allow that to happen. FWIW I was at CH when they moved (albiet temporarily) to Gladesville back in the mid 90's. Gladsville a significantly better association and more convenient (travel wise) for Hills sockah residents.
