I think you are missing the political value of this to the ALP - of course they know this senate motion will go nowhere.

The point is to keep the focus on this issue, rather than let the govt control the media agenda.

They have obviously determined that this issue is no longer a negative to the ALP, and has become (in their narrative) another example of Abbott dodginess.

They will be keeping this in the media as long as they can. And why not? Their polling has been improving since this 'conflict of interest' issue came up.

It is scary how many people actually buy into this sort of stuff though :lol:

In an interview with the ABC's AM program on Tuesday, Mr Dutton blamed media organisations when asked what the government could do to steer itself back on course and communicate its message to voters.
"I think it would be helpful if some of the commentators in the area, in this space of politics, started reporting on the incidents, as opposed to being players themselves," he said.

"I think there's a huge move by Fairfax at the moment to try and bring the government down, that's fair enough.
"They aren't supposed to be political players, they're supposed to be objective reporters of the news and I think many of them have morphed into frustrated politicians themselves."

Mr Dutton later told Sky News: "The reality is that there is a bit of a [size=7]jihad[/size] being conducted by Fairfax at the moment."

Mr Dutton's swipe is similar to criticism made by former prime minister Julia Gillard of News Corp publications during the turbulent Rudd-Gillard era.

Mr Dutton raises some valid points. Fairfax is obviously waging war against the government in an attempt to bring it down. As a free market enterprise they can do whatever they like, but they are neglecting their social and moral responsibilty to report fairly and objectively, which is supposedly the hallmark of good journalism.
Almost every article in a Fairfax publication about the government is negatively framed, sure some its warrented but a lot of it is just confected garbage in a hollow attempt to make the government look bad for the sake of pleasing its readers, rather than giving them valuable , worthwhile content. Some might call this recompense for The Daily Telegraphs treatment of Gillard and Rudd, but the Daily Telegraph is a terrible newspaper and it appears Fairfax is sliding into the same moral vacuum as they are.

"If you want better coverage, be a better government."
