Yes Murdoch is a cancer but that doesn't mean google and facebook should be able to steal content.

Essentially the media companies are saying 'If we post something, facebook should pay...even when it just clicks to our own site'. Facebook are not literally stealing the content and reposting as their own.

If it drives clicks towards actual news sites then that's good.  And that's just not Murdoch news sites.  There's the Guardian, Nine entertainment and others.

Facebook are tax dodging cunce.  No sympathy for them at all.

You know they also blocked any sports pages. Food real estate, satire pages and more yeah.  Yes Google and Facebook need to pay taxes but why should they pay murdoch for the privilege to send people to their site??

Do you think they're hosting that content out of the goodness of their hearts?  They make money from it.  That's why they're flipping out.

You know how to get around facebook blocks?  Go direct to the owners website.  You're actually doing the owners, say the Beetoota, a favour because eyes on their site creates revenue for them. 

It's comparable to blokes here copying articles in full and posting them here.  There's an unwritten rule that you post the link and maybe the first paragraph?  Why?  Because the clicks help the author produce more content.  Posting the full article means no clicks, no eyes on the original work, no ad revenue.  

As bad as Murdoch is there is a larger principle in play here.

Apparently public health departments, ACTU and charities are banned too.

For Facebook, their model is driven off user made content. They don't need the publisher. Google needs publishers more than Facebook, hence the deal.

This is the interlinked relationship which FB and publishers have. FB is a platform which helps push more clicks/visits (while they are making ad revenue as well). I agree that FB shouldn't just copy and paste content. but I don't think they're doing that here. They might be doing the clickbait headline and the link, but not the full article.

Newscorp want the definition of "news content" to be so broad that it captures pretty much everything. That's apparently why all those pages got blocked.

Of course in doing this Suckerberg just provided evidence of monopolistic behavior, but again doesn't care because the ani-trust proceedings foreshadowed by the Trump administration have gone quiet, at the same time the Biden administration is stacked with ex Big Tech employees.
