They're probably going to not react well to you attempting to teach them specific techniques, so you have to hide it in more game based stuff that they will enjoy and not view as teaching. I have a quite a few specific SSGs for them -shooting, passing, dribbling. How do you think they'd respond to 1v1 exercises? How do you think they'd respond to mere suggestions (demonstrations) of certain techniques to use in a 1v1 with limited pressure from defenders? How do you think they'd respond to structural work, such as the defensive and midfield lines working against the attack? All jokes aside, what I'd suggest is that you keep it to SSGs and finish with an "all in" game. Occasionally I'd make the game "defence vs attack" to help them with a bit of structure, but otherwise playing is best IMO. Think of them as little kids with a beer addiction - just let them have fun, and it's beer instead of snakes after the game.

You'll also have terrible players who've never played in their life. My mates convinced me to play div 3 after I'd given up and I couldn't believe a grown man would pass across goals for an opposition player to tap in.
I also couldn't believe regardless of whether it was a 25 meter pass or a 3 meter pass the pace on the ball would be exactly the same haha ... these guys are beyond help.

as the saying goes, you can only coach whats in front of you. I would concentrate more on phase of play (attack vs defence) and a few set pieces

I know a women's split state league senior women's team who I was thinking of organising practice matches against, with the veterans not allowed to tackle. I think this might motivate the old codgers, although it seems a disproportionate number of the female gender bat for the other side in football. Edited by Decentric: 29/3/2012 06:36:20 PM

Not if they are Poms. I was just in England and Scotland, beer paradise. Except they serve warm beer. Some enlightened publicans served chilled beer, but it caused many debates.

I played 35's for a few years and use to tell my mrs I went to a BBQ with a few mates and a footy match broke out. Stick to that way of thinking and you will have an enjoyable year.

Thanks guys. I have a lot of useful tips and can avoid making a few mistakes.
I only have to coach them occasionally.
It is just that there is supposed to be some consistency in a whole club approach.

DB-PGFC wrote:Its social football ffs just let them have there fun. Fun and technical work don't have to be mutually exclusive, particularly if one improves. It is also productive if a player at any stage of development does something different. Technical work is done before 4v4 SSGs with specific aims.

Some people here coach senior men's teams.
I've had a few sessions with pretty good female adult senior players, but I haven't touched on senior male players, veterans of mixed ability, over 35s. I will be in a role where I will be taking some sessions with them in a club. The regular coach says they often think they know all there is to the game.
Many of them will be pretty one footed. I don't want to demonstrate and then ask them to perform technical stuff they perceive they are not capable of doing, but I still want them to develop technically as part of TIC.
Any tips from experienced coaches of senior players, particularly playing social football?
