Whilst I can't really disagree with the 7 nations listed there ought to be more focus on the world's newest country, Republic of South Sudan, which is experiencing what can only be described as the early signs of a Civil War, disputes over oil rich zones, tribalism and trying to establish democracy...

Biased perhaps but I know way too many dual citizens, many of whom are hoping to return to RoSS in some way or another, for it not to be front of mind in my opinion.

The situation in Sudan is just another relic of fuck ups in 50's British foreign policy. Much like Israel, Egypt, South Africa...

The only difference is people are paying more attention now in South Sudan because oil is becoming an increasingly sought after commodity.

How Kim Jong-Un executed his uncle, with starving dogs

NETWORK WRITER AND WIRES NEWS LIMITED NETWORK JANUARY 03, 2014 6:49PM

North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un hailed the elimination of factional 'filth' after the execution of his uncle.

AFTER North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un declared his uncle to be "despicable human scum, worse than a dog," details of his execution have emerged.

The details were disclosed in a report, where unlike previous executions of political prisoners which were carried out by firing squads with machine guns, Jang Song Thaek was stripped naked and thrown into a cage, along with his five closest aides, the Straits Times reports.

"Then 120 hounds, starved for three days, were allowed to prey on them until they were completely eaten up. This is called "quan jue", or execution by dogs."

The report also said the entire process lasted for an hour, with Jong-Un, watching it along with 300 senior officials.

The news of how his uncle was executed comes as South Korea dismissed North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un's conciliatory words in his New Year message as an empty gesture, urging Pyongyang to scrap its nuclear programs to show it is committed to better relations.

In his speech yesterday, Kim hailed the execution last month of his once-powerful uncle Jang Song-Thaek and accused the United States and South Korea of manoeuvring for a nuclear war.

But he also called for a "favourable climate" to improve relations with the South, saying it was time for the two Koreas to stop doing "anything detrimental to national unity and reconciliation".

Kim Jong Uns second New Year address left Korea watchers parsing his speech for policy hints. John Delury of Yonsei University tells the WSJ's Jake Lee how analysts are interpreting his words.

In its first official response, the South Korean government said it was sceptical about the intentions of Kim, who has ruled the nuclear-armed North since the death of his father, Kim Jong-Il, in December 2011.

"Peace and reconciliation cannot be achieved merely by words", Seoul said in a statement.

"In order to improve ties between the South and the North, North Korea must show sincerity in building trust and above all, it must make genuine efforts for denuclearisation".

It said Kim made similar comments in last year's New Year speech before a series of provocative actions from the North including a third nuclear test, threats of military attacks and the unilateral closure of an inter-Korean industrial zone.

Pyongyang shut down the complex at Kaesong in April during a spike in military tensions that followed the nuclear test but the two Koreas agreed in September to resume operations.

South Korean Defence Minister Kim Kwan-Jin on Thursday cautioned that the apparent peace overtures from the North could be a "smoke screen" aimed at hiding a provocative act, urging the military to remain alert.

Reports Mugabe has collapsed

By: Jacqui Stanford, | International News | Sunday January 5 2014 19:35

There are unconfirmed reports from Zimbabwe that President Robert Mugabe has collapsed.

A disgruntled leaker at the Zanu-PF party has made the claim.

There have been rumours for several years that President Mugabe, who is 89, has prostate cancer.

Australia won’t comment on lifeboat policy report

By Associated Press, Wednesday, January 8, 2:53 PM

CANBERRA, Australia — The government refused to comment on a newspaper report on Wednesday that Australia is buying lifeboats to carry asylum seekers back to Indonesian islands.

Australia was buying 16 engine-powered and enclosed lifeboats — similar to those carried by cruise ships and oil tankers — for border protection boats to carry as an alternative to rescuing asylum seekers found in unseaworthy vessels, Fairfax Media newspaper reported.

Crews on boats smuggling people have resorted to sabotaging engines or sinking their vessels to avoid their ships being turned back to Indonesia by Australian border protection crews.

By putting asylum seekers into safe lifeboats and sending them back to Indonesian islands, Australia is likely to risk further angering Indonesia, which opposes the government’s policy of turning back boats full of asylum seekers.

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison refused to comment, saying his government does not confirm or comment on such reports.

“The government’s policy of no public comment on operational matters is based on the advice of (the) border protection agency and operational leaders to protect the security of our operations and to ensure that they can be conducted with maximum safety and effectiveness for all involved,” Morrison said in a statement.

“The government will continue to take all steps necessary to stop the boats consistent with our commitments to the Australian people and to protect safety of life at sea,” he said.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s conservative party won national elections in September with a promise to turn boats carrying asylum seekers back to Indonesia, which angered the Indonesian government.

The number of would-be refugee from countries such as Iran, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka reaching Australia aboard rickety Indonesian fishing boats has exploded in recent years and has become a hot-button political issue.

But the government has refused to detail how that military-enforced policy had been put into place since it won power.

Morrison on Tuesday refused to comment on Indonesian and Australian media reports that the Australian navy had turned back at least one asylum seeker boat in recent weeks. The asylum seekers were reportedly left stranded on Rote Island, near West Timor.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa also refused to comment on the specifics when asked about the reports on Tuesday, but reiterated his government’s objection to Australia turning foreigners back to Indonesia.

“Such a policy is not conducive to a comprehensive solution to the issue,” Natalegawa said.

British plan ANZAC whitewash

24 HOURS AGO JANUARY 09, 2014 12:00AM

A PC push by British politicians is threatening to downplay the role of Aussie diggers in WW1 in favour of developing nations.

The ANZAC whitewash comes despite the 62,000 Australians who died in the Great War fighting for the British Empire and another 156,000 wounded, with no 100-year anniversary events planned by Britain recognising the sacrifice.

News Corp Australia has learned in a blatant politicising of the anniversary, Whitehall officials in London have been briefed to push the efforts by the so-called "New Commonwealth" nations in a bid to win political and economic favour in multicultural Britain.

The move comes amid a heated social and political row in Britain over immigration numbers with the issue likely to determine the outcome of federal elections in Britain next year.
British government sources have confirmed internal briefings on WWI commemorations have not mentioned Australia or New Zealand once, instead staff from departments and cabinet offices have been briefed to concentrate on other British Empire contributions by soldiers from countries such as Nigeria and other dominions in West Africa, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The "new Commonwealth" is a British term to describe predominantly non-white and developing decolonised countries and is often used in debates on immigration.

The desire to push the war efforts by soldiers from these countries is now being seen as more fruitful to promote "community cohesion" and link younger generations of ethnic Britons today to the war fought by their forefathers. It's also seen as high-level support for old colonies like India which is experiencing a booming economy.
"It's basically to remind Britons the First World War wasn't just soldiers from here fighting in France and Belgium but involved people from Lagos, Kingston and the Punjab," a government insider said.

"There has been no mention of old Commonwealth Allies like Australia or New Zealand but more interest in celebrating the role from New Commonwealth countries. I think it's fair to say Commonwealth ties are being frayed a little on this one."
The British Department For Culture, Media and Sport, tasked with WWI anniversary events, confirmed there were no plans to have any specific events recognising Australia's contribution to the British Empire's cause.

"I don't think there is anything specific at this stage for individual countries," a spokeswoman said. "It is obviously a four-year program so there may well be specific things as we go along but nothing specific at this stage."
British author and commentator Murray Rowlands said it was a disgrace Australian and New Zealanders were being ignored.
"There is nothing in (British Prime Minister) David Cameron's program of commemoration that mentions these countries," he said.
"The British pretty much lost the war in July 1918, they were in retreat and it was

the Australians and New Zealanders who got put into the gap … they were the ones that held up the Germans in places like Hamel (Somme, northern France), with the Americans too but basically the well-trained Australians, pretty battle hardened by then, who stopped the Germans. If they had got to Amiens the game would have been gone because that was where the British communication system were. That needs recognition."
Australia's Department of Veterans Affairs and the Australian High Commission in London are planning a series of Australian-specific events in the UK this year and next year, the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli.

Nationalism: an extreme form of patriotism marked by a feeling of superiority over other countries.
Racism: the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

:-k

That article relating to an ANZAC whitewash, if true, is a farce though.
