So yeah. Reported chemical weapons attack in Syria overnight. Jesus Christ, it's just getting worse and worse over there. Reading comments on news articles and facebook and the like of people who sound shocked and surprised by the news that Syria has 'finally' used Chemical Weapons against it's own people. Anybody who has been keeping tabs on the war over there will probably know that Assad's forces have been using chemical weapons in small amounts for the last 6-months or so. This new attack comes as no real surprise - the surprising and horrifying thing about this latest use and offensive, is the large scale of chemical weapons used. Hearing reports of up to 20 shells/Missiles of sarin gas were used. Pretty large scale - and explains the reports of up to 1,600 people killed.

The situation over there is completely out of control. Syria has admitted to owning chemical weapons - they were one of a handful of countries who refused to destroy them/give them up a while ago. Syria's justifcation process is fucked too - Yes Assad has come out previously and stated that he would neve use chemical weapons against his own people, however what he'll claim if/when the UN find proof that this was a chemical weapons attack, is that the Civilians killed were 'hiding and sheltering' the 'terroists' (which has been a commen excuse throughout the civil war whenever there has been a high civilian casualty count during battles).

Its the same way the media attacks Islam and Shariah Law because they dont understand it or understand why certain aspects of it are wanted in western society.'

But when asked to elaborate on that point you say this

I cant tell you exactly the good and the bad, im no scholar on Shariah Law, however i do want to study it and hopefully have a better understanding of it before i go around spouting texts and verses from it without proper knowledge. The key aspect of Shariah Law i do know of is that, 'one must live and abide by the laws of the land in which they preside'.

How can those logically make sense together?

Edited by RedKat: 21/8/2013 10:21:27 PM

I dont know the technicalities of all the laws and everything in them, i do know that there are laws with regards to stoning and cutting off of hands and stuff, but i dont know them in depth or in full to be able to elaborate on them. The little knowledge i know of them, makes me know that they need to be changed or are outdated.

Then they not abiding by Shariah. I bet those that rebel Australian Law are the ones who are calling for Shariah Law, but dont actually realise their double standards.

It's a shame that minors can't get the death penalty. In this circumstance it's entirely deserved.

Direct your anger at Russia, they're the ones keeping Assad's regime afloat. Not that the other side are any better - they're more like the Taliban. They just don't have chemical weapons at their disposal.

Climate "experts" can't workout if sea levels are rising or falling
Quote:
New US research shows Australia's dry soil and mountainous coastline soaked up heavy rainfall in 2010 and 2011 and stopped it from flowing back into the ocean.
That effectively halted a longterm trend of rising sea levels which have been caused by higher temperatures and melting ice sheets.

"No other continent has this combination of atmospheric set-up and topography," scientist John Fasullo, who worked on the study, said in a statement.
"Only in Australia could the atmosphere carry such heavy tropical rains to such a large area, only to have those rains fail to make their way to the ocean."
The world's oceans have been rising in recent decades by around three millimetres every year.
This is partly because heat has caused water to expand, and partly because run-off from retreating glaciers and ice sheets has made its way into the oceans.
But for an 18-month period beginning in 2010, the oceans mysteriously dropped by about seven millimetres, more than offsetting the annual rise, the study says.
The US scientists say this was mainly caused by Australia's uniquely dry soil and land surface.
While some of the water evaporated in the desert sun, much of it sank into the dry, granular soil of the Western Plateau or filled the Lake Eyre basin in the east.
Since 2011, sea levels have been rising at a faster pace of about ten millimetres per year.

People of Syria want their freedom. Government oppresses and kills its citizens.

People assume that both sides are evil and quite frankly its not a humanitarian or world issue and to let the two sides sort it out themselves.

Reports have been bandied about for months. This is the reason why UN weapons inspectors are in the country in the first place.

Syria's economy was built off oil, but oil reserves have become severely depleted over recent years. Syria has already become a net oil importer. Hence the global super-powers' reluctance to become involved first-hand.

Two thirds of fk all. It's disgusting while people are dying.

Nothing to do with oil though, and everything to do with an entrenched relationship Russia's had with Syria since cold war days.

President Mugabe uses inauguration speech to say: ‘Homosexuality a filthy, filthy disease’

Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe has launched a new attack on the West and Zimbabwe’s LGBT community.

Mr Mugabe made the remarks at his inauguration after his party, ZANU-PF, won the country’s election earlier this month. It is the seventh consequtive win for his party after a series of elections that were heavily criticised by the international community. The most recent election results have been met with accusations of vote rigging and fraud.

The president reserved part of his inauguration speech for attacking gay people within in the country. In a rambling speech, he urged young Zimbabweans to “damn” homosexuality. He added: “That [homosexuality] destroys nations, apart from it being a filthy, filthy disease,” he said. Ahead of the election, he said that gays should be castrated.

He attacked Western countries as “the vile ones whose moral turpitude we must mourn.”

Throughout his election campaign vocal attacks on the country’s gay population were a prominent feature, in one attack he urged for the heads of gay men to be chopped off and described them as being worse than pigs. He described homosexuals as worse than animals because “they know who to mate with.”

In a speech during his campaign Mugabe attacked President Obama for linking foreign aid to the protection of gay rights and called on the US to keep out of Zimbabwe’s affairs.

The Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) – the country’s domestic monitoring agency as well as several Western nations have expressed concern about the outcome of the elections after irregularities on polling day.

Homosexuality is illegal in Zimbabwe and Mugabe has been a staunch promoter of homophobic persecution since he became President in 1987.

I'm confused. I've never drunk turpentine in my life.

Is that harder to drink than regular turpentine?

Muslim Woman Told To Remove Burka In Court, Because Judge Must Confirm Identity

The Huffington Post UK | By Jessica Elgot

A young Muslim woman in a burka was told by the judge to take off her face veil, as she took to the dock to enter her plea, because someone could impersonate her.

Judge Peter Murphy at Blackfriars Crown Court said the principle of open justice overrode the woman’s right to her religious beliefs, but the woman, 21, from Hackney, refused to remove the covering in front of men in the court room, Court News UK reported.

The woman is accused of allegedly intimidating a witness, involved in a separate case, in June this year.

Judge Murphy told the woman, who had only her eyes uncovered, that she must remove the veil, saying : "It is necessary for this court to be satisfied that they can recognise the defendant.

"While I obviously respect the right to dress in any way she wishes, certainly while outside the court, the interests of justice are paramount.

"I can’t, as a circuit judge, accept a plea from a person whose identity I am unable to ascertain.

"It would be easy for someone on a later occasion to appear and claim to be the defendant. The court would have no way to check on that."

Official guidelines from the Ministry of Justice for the wearing of the niqab in court were published in 2007. It states: "A sensitive request to remove a veil may be appropriate, but should follow careful thought as attending court itself is a daunting prospect for witnesses, and may affect the quality of evidence given.

"Where identification is an issue, it must be dealt with appropriately and may require the witness to make a choice between showing her face or not giving evidence.

Prosecutor Sarah Counsell said the police officer in charge of the case was content that he recognised the defendant while she was in the burka, and the defendant had agreed to have a female police officer verify her identity.

But Judge Murphy said: "There is the principle of open justice and it can’t be subject to the religion of the defendant whether the principle is observed or not.

"I am not saying this because of the particular form of dress by this defendant, I apply that to any form of dress that had the same issues."

The case was adjourned, and will reopen on 12 September.

Canada's top court ruled on Thursday that Muslim women wearing the niqab can be forced to remove their veils when testifying, but only if absolutely necessary and after any objections have been considered.
