I know how much SMFC fans on this forum love to stick the boot into HAL clubs when they hit tough times, so read this and weep ... or have a laugh if you're fed up with SMFC fans bitterness.

Seems it will be many many years before SMFC have the quality to play HAL football - the way they're travelling - 4 pts off relegation at the 1/2 way mark of the season = SMFC may be better suited to playing Vic State League next season.

South Melbourne: "We've hit rock bottom"
22.06.2012

South Melbourne Head Coach Peter Tsolakis reflects on the season so far...

Season 2012 was supposed to be a turning point for Oceania Club of the Century South Melbourne. A redeveloped Lakeside Stadium offering financially viable world class facilities along with impressive signings in the form of 2010 Golden Boot Trent Rixon, 2011 Gold Medal Winner Jason Trifiro, Billy Vojtek Medal winner Glen Trifiro and midfield lynchpin Dimitri Tsiaras.

You can like the Victorian Premier League on Facebook.

The mood around the club was one of anticipation; not since the successful days of the National Soccer League had South Melbourne felt such a buzz. New grounds, new strip, new players, new coach – it was a Premiership in the making and 2012 was going to be a year of celebration and a return to glory.

Fast forward to now, almost half way through the season and the reality paints a very different story. South are languishing in 9th spot; a mere four points away from the relegation zone, while the star recruits have yet to light the league with Rixon in particular only managing to find the net twice so far.

With expectant fans not happy and rival supporters always willing to twist the knife, the pressure is building for players and staff alike. A loss two weeks ago to Northcote City – Head Coach Peter Tsolakis’ club last season – was the final straw for many South fans.

Conceding that the season has not been a success, Tsolakis is trying to put his finger on what is going wrong and what can be done about it.

“It’s been pretty disappointing, we don’t seem to have that many positives; our home form has been bad, we’re not finishing chances, we’ve had our fair share on injuries. We’ve hit rock bottom.

“We’re far behind where we thought we’d be at this stage of the season, we’re not scoring goals and we’re losing against the lesser teams at home.”

Despite often dominating possession and field position, South home matches seem to follow a similar pattern, one which isn’t followed away from home.

“Teams have come to our place and don’t try to play football at all; they just park the bus in front of the 18 yard box and we can’t break them down.

“Whereas away from home teams are more inclined to try and play and that suits us. We have to come up with a Plan B to combat that at home.

“Playing at home is our number one priority and trying to pick up points there. At Lakeside we have our sponsors coming to matches, our home crowd and so far we haven’t lived up to the mark.

“We’re losing by sucker-punch goals against teams like Southern Stars, Melbourne Knights and Northcote, and no disrespect to those clubs but this is unacceptable.

“We’ve all sat down, looked each other in the eye and said we have to pull our finger out and come up with a couple of different strategies, come up with a new formula.”

South Melbourne is one of the biggest clubs in terms of history and culture, and with past success comes expectations from fans; and they expect every South team to live up to the culture of playing well and scoring goals. Standards that South have yet to live up to this season.

Playing under such pressure can take its toll, but no matter the demands it is not an excuse for bad performances according to Tsolakis.

“We have identified playing at home as an issue, and maybe we do feel the pressure playing in front of the expectant supporters, but in their defence they have got every right to complain when the product we’re bringing out isn’t up to the standards of the club.

“We’re at a professional level and if you can’t handle that little bit of pressure then you shouldn’t be playing this sport. We’re not going to use pressure and expectation as an excuse.”

It’s not all doom and gloom though, as players return from injury – especially in the backline – the team will start to find improved continuity, and history shows that clubs can come from anywhere to win the Victorian Premier League.

“Our away form hasn’t been too bad; we’ve got points off the top three or four away from home and if we can bring that into our home fixtures then we might get some reward.

“Green Gully were exactly where we are at this stage of the season for the past two years, and both times they went on to win the thing. If that’s anything to go by there is scope to move up the table.

“There’s 36 points to be played for, we are going to try and rectify our season, try to pick up some points early on and hopefully the results start to go our way.”

Whatever happens it will be another rollercoaster season for the South Melbourne supporters, and with the prospect of the transfer window opening soon – there is reason for optimism as there could be a chance to pick up a well needed attacking player to take some pressure off of the forwards.

South Melbourne continue their season this weekend with the Traditional Derby against Heidelberg United this Sunday at Lakeside Stadium, kick-off at 5pm.

Why would you feel the need to gloat about South Melbournes current predicament?

You have everything, fantastic stadiums, full time players and coaches, a marketing department, a membership department, an Accounting Department, an Administration department, a TV contract that actually shows your matches, fantastic crowds, yet Joe needs to point out South's woeful season in the VPL.

I thought SMFC was irrelevant to todays "New Football" supporter?

What are you so envious about Joe, that you feel the need to start a topic about SMFC?

Why are you still checking our website?

What is it that South Melbourne FC has and had, that MVFC does not that would make you, Joe, so envious?

And please using the"Bitters" excuse is pretty weak, when a handful of South supporters on a Football Forum can get you riled up Joe.

Anyway enjoy the moment if thats what makes your day.

I'm not questioning South Melbourne's legacy, they are one of the most successful Australian clubs of all time, but certain truths need to be faced by not just South Melbourne, but ALL ethnic-based clubs. THESE CLUBS HAVE NO FUTURE IN THE A-LEAGUE!!!

Exactly, we play the bottom of the table side tomorrow. Win that and we're most likely 7 off relegation and quite possibly 3 or 4 off finals. We've been underperforming badly, but it's too early to panic.

Worth remembering that this time last season Green Gully were near the bottom - and they won the whole thing.

Just having a bit of fun, lads.

It's bloody annoying & hurts a bit when people, who have no stake in your league or club, start throwing muck just for the sake of it?

Now you know how HAL fans feel when people, who have zero involvement or interest in the HAL, start throwing much at our league & our clubs.

Just because someone doesn't support an A-League team, doesn't mean they have no involvement or interest in the HAL. I have a lot of friends employed at A-League sides and take a huge interest in how they (and their teams) go.

Won today. Closer to the finals than the relegation zone. Transfer window coming up. Always plenty of movement after that. Things can change pretty quick in the VPL.

Does this mean we are now closer to a spot in the A league?

Was a good win last night, a bit of luck for a change as well. We are only like 6 points off second spot and with some exciting players coming in during the transfer window i'd expect us to be challenging for the title...we also have a heap of home games in the second half of the season...3 in a row in fact coming up so if we can sort out our home form we should be right....nobody wants to meet South in the finals thats for sure.

As far as South getting relegated what a laugh...we have been hit with so many sucker punch defeats this season with the quality we have it simply isnt possible to go down.

Definately been a shithouse season so far. We overposses, pass way too much, play nice/pretty football, miss chance after chance after chance..........then concede a silly sucker punch goal from a defensive blunder. Need to sort this crap out. The VPL is about running, tackling, workrate, defending. That's why teams like Gully win it time after time.
It's certainly character building watching another mediocre mid-table South season over the cold, wet amd miserable winter months!!! Stuff watching football in nice, modern family friendly stadiums on balmy 25deg nights in January. That's for all you softies out there.

Don't think it's that we pass too much, I think it's that we try to be too fast and too clever with the passing. Too many one-touch attempts and flicks. Midfield is too predictable in that way and we lack anything 'explosive' in the middle (either from a defensive point of view, or with regard to someone who will charge forward and let loose)

It's a totally frustrating way to play in the VPL Ben. Flicks, tricks, sideways and backwards, looking for the perfect through ball etc etc. Then watching a hopefull long ball from the opposition get totally messed up by our defence and copping a goal. It's probably happened at least 5-6 times this year. The Trifiro's, Gasparis are all similar type mid's and should never be in the same XI. A midfield of Keenan, Tsiaris, Trifiro(either one), Nando is more balanced(when available that is). Rixon I definately know is playing with an injury but battles away at least.

Teams come to Lakeside and play their arses off against us, it's their grand final beating the 'mighty' South. We haven't been able to cope with this situation for years. The coaching staff need to be onto this and send the team out ready to rumble, not try and pass the opposition to death. Fed up with losing to rubbish teams that simply put 11 men behind the ball and wait for a mistake from us to score. Happened against the Knights, Northcote and Southern Stars amongst others.
Hopefully they can gel and play smarter in the 2nd half of the year and make a late run into the finals.

We turn the ball over too often and Rixon needs to settle and start finding the net. Having Nando fit and on the park each week will help.

Stability or consolidation is the answer. We are turning over too many players every year and our coaching staff changes ever year. You cannot keep rebuilding every year and expect instant success.
