pv4 wrote:I think I've asked this before, but I've either forgotten the advice or ignored it (sorry if I did either!).
I'm 6'3, range between 97-101kg. At complete optimum football fitness, I'm 96-98kg. At feeling fat and unfit, I'm 100-102kg. At gravely sick, dehydrate and feeling like I'm going to die, I once got to 94kg. So tl;dr - I've got a big frame. I think most of my kgs goes to my massive skull and massive arse  Basically imagine Per Mertesacker - that's basically me. I'd like to think in terms of pace etc that I'm average-to-slow, but looking without bias I'd say I'm slow compared to other centrebacks at my level.
Without gym and equipment access, what can I do to improve my sprint speed, general sharpness, pace, and quicker feet for football? I'm talking specific exercises (how many and how long), etc?
I'm starting to think I can pick back up my ambitions to play at a higher football level, I think the FFA Cup has got me keen to give it a crack again  I back myself to have the skill, the brain, etc - but looking at the other centrebacks at my level and above, they just have that extra pace and ability to move themselves around at a quicker rate, plus they seem to have quicker feet (it doesn't help that I'm so tall).
Anyone with some good pointers, drills, etc to help out?
In terms of equipment I actually have, I have a pushbike and I think I have a set of ladders somewhere. That's about it.

Over the last week I have been cycling to and from work. It takes me somewhere between 20 and 30 minutes to do the trip, depending on how hard I push myself. There are 3 major hills along the way (basically none of the journey is flat), and particularly the second hill is a monster.
But after a week, I'm feeling so amazingly good about myself. I feel so spritely, have a spring in my step, and am not as phased about it being football off-season as I'm keeping some level of fitness up!

Just saw a couple of photos of me from last weekend... I have put on weight over the last couple of months
I knew I had, basically because I've done nothing except work, renovate & be a new father. But the photographic evidence has basically turned me into a woman in that all I can think of right now is getting fit, and not-fat, again.
Hear me, my FFT family! I, pv4, will exercise every day and by the end of this month I will upload a picture of my sculpted, finely-tuned athletic machine body!
And if I don't, I've not only let myself down but also all of you aswell.

Since then I've played 5aside once a week, and that is the grand total of my exercise since March. So to go from training/playing football 4-6 days a week for roughly the last 15 years, to one night a week, is a complete change of world for me. And my body is NOT thankful for the rest

Pv4's Get Super Fit Again Diary:
Day 1 (Wed 5 Aug): Excuse-filled day and night. First day and I've let us all down  I weighed myself on my house scales and I run in at 104.1kg - which on these scales is about 4-5kg above my super fit football weight. I'm more worried about how I feel in myself, and how I look, rather than my weight but seeing as though I'll be doing mostly cardio-based exercising I guess I'm going to set myself the goal of getting back to double digits weight wise by the end of the month. Day 2 (Thu 6 Aug): 40 min walk with Mrs v4 and bv4 in the stroller. Also late in the night I cleared some space in my shed and did a Cardio Circuit from my old Insanity videos. Forgot to vaccuum before doing so, and at one stage I wiped my face with my towel and subsequently accidentally covered my face with sawdust  so my plan for Day 3 is to clean up first

About seven weeks ago I exercised in a gym 5- 7 days a week, as well as walking 90 miniutes a day. I've had a rotten variety of colds since and haven't been able to visit the gym at all.
I do circuit training for 30 minute sessions. That is non-stop, constantly changing exercise, with no rests between sets. I picked this up from doing karate years ago. It combines exercise bike, rowing machine , upper body light weights with very high reps, core strength ( Pilates), sit ups and leg exercises with and without light weights.
I've seen hundreds of people train at gyms, but few, if any, do circuit training.
Many do a combo of rowing machines, exercise bike, treadmill and cross trainers, but incorporate no weights. These are usually women and geriatrics.
Most who use weights appear to spend most of their time looking in the mirror, resting for minutes in between sets.

Except when the young fit girl who would of been in her early 20s would go in there to use the squat rack. The moment she went in you would see everybody and as much weight as they can to the next sets   ...... She didn't even bother to notice them lol.... walked straight out when she was done

Mate, ask the quicker feet with a football in Performance. I may have just the exercise. As far as the other areas, I've posed this to state TDs and have never had a satisfactory answer.

Nubile young women are a shocking distraction these days. The gear they wear makes them even more of a distraction.

pv4 have you tried Body weight fitness? I started it and it's just as good as lifting weights if you're looking for results and it goes hand in hand with cardio workouts. https://www.reddit.com/r/bodyweightfitness/

Body weight exercises are great for athletes in most sports and people looking to maintain a high general level of fitness, as it doesn't impose a "weight penalty" associated with weights training and gaining muscle mass

How's this? Monday and Wednesday: 10 minutes of elliptical and bicycle at 70% effort, twice. Five minutes of treadmill at 6.5 KpH. 60-90 minutes of Ultimate Frisbee on Monday. As well as the usual kickabout during recess and lunch at least twice a week.
For the first time, but certainly not the last, I began to believe that Arsenals moods and fortunes somehow reflected my own. - Hornby

Anyone done one of those body composition scan things? Saw a poster at gym about http://www.melbournebca.com.au/ and was thinking of giving it a crack next time they're in town. $40 for a scan
