Speaking of Parkrun again, I joined a running club:

The Derek Zoolander Centre For Kids Who Can't Run Good

Got a shirt and everything. Will be giving it its first run tomorrow!

In the last 30 years I've trained in gyms where the other trainers were almost exclusively males, or by myself. Recently in the last few years I've joined a gym chain where both genders train.

There is one area where males and females are unequivocally different - body shapeR

It seems that women can have great success at shaping the body they want, to an extent, beyond genetics. I try not to look, having a countersexist consciousness, but there are quite a number of women who train at the chain of gyms I do, who must be pretty comfortable with their own appearance because they are keen to expose quite a lot of flesh in tight fitting gym attire.

I just cut this down for length rather than reblogging the whole thing.
While I might not be naturally thin, I lost a decent amount of weight a few years ago and have since kept it off/lost a bit more, so I'm a perfectly healthy weight. I do think I need to join a gym again though, I haven't been exercising much lately and I quite easily gain fat so I don't look as good as I'd like. Thank you for all of your advice though.

Got a gig / second job doing early morning shifts at Coles. 3 times a week. Lots of lifting and walking, and get paid.

Was a conscious decision to do this to stay fit rather than having to deal with that crap at the gym

I regularly go to an exercise physiologist who gives brilliant advice. These are tertiary trained over three years, and are like expert personal trainers.

Recently he said that the body gets used to the same type of training exercise whether it is running, cycling, swimming, football, etc.

So for instance in the first 3- 6 months of a new form of exercise, like cycling, playing football or /and futsal, swimming, deep water aerobics, gym circuit training, running, walking, the gains are greatest for weight loss in that initial period .

After that the body becomes used to it. Then the body burns calories a lot slower.

Last week I flogged myself doing circuit training ( weights for upper body and lower body with 18 rep sets, exercise bike and core training), with no breaks for an hour in the gym, followed by a 30 minute Pilates style warm down, plus walking the dog for 4- 70 minutes hour each day for five successive days. I lost no weight at all. ](*,)

I cannot believe the weight David Carney carries given all the hard training he does for football. He looks like he is flabby. Yet most doing his workload look really, really fit, like most of the other HAL players, and, like he used to.

Apparently, it is really important for one's health to exercise regularly , not just to lose weight, or maintain it.

The exercise physiologist also said it is far more beneficial to do 35 minutes gym work every day ( 245 minutes circuit training per week), than three 90 minute sessions per week ( 270 minutes over the week).

Boxing is fucking fantastic.

You get such a workout it's unbelievable. Mix in Weight training with it and of course eat well and you'll get a heap of progress done within a month. I exercise every day though (two days are extremely light) so that may have something to do with it as well.

Do kickboxing training and the energy required to do kicks, particularly jumping kicks, is higher again than boxing.

not tried it but can guarantee it works. however its the same as the VLCD milkshakes from chemist warehouse. like tony ferguson, optislim and optifast.
Not necessarily the best method but it will work.

There is nothing ingredients-wise in these shakes that will accelerate your weight loss, it's simply a method of regulating your calorie intake whilst meeting minimum standards as to be classified as food.

But yes, technically they work in the short term.

Studies show that they most often have the opposite effect in the long-term, and you're likely to end up heavier than when you began.

yep, unless you can magically fix your diet and or training while on these shakes they are of very little benefit other than yoyo'ing your weight. I think people are better off looking into things like the "Team Danny Green" program. I had a mate try it and it gave a good excercise program and a great recipe list of hundreds of meal ideas. and it is cheaper than those man shakes by the looks of it.

That's mostly because it teaches you little about healthy eating habits. I do wonder if you used those then went onto something like lite n easy for a while to get used to proper portion sizes and a balanced diet then it'd be more successful.

They (VLCD shakes Very Low Calorie Diet) were originally developed for hospital patients, they were used for inactive people that needed to lose weight.
They were then produced for mainstream customers.

Lite n easy is actually quite good and something I have used in summer when work is overflowing. However it gets quite expensive, but like anything if you can learn from it then it is beneficial.

Yeah I know someone that was pretty obese and needed to lose 40kgs and managed to lose 30 using VLCD shakes. If you only need to lose 10-15kgs then there are better options. The ALDI ones apparently are excellent and only $2 a packet.

Also have some friends that had success with Lite n Easy and were recently on one of their ads(not Luke Hodge unfortunately ) and they swear by it. The convenience factor when you're life's busy is appealing but yeah it ain't cheap if you're going to do it for a long time.

Yeah like I said lite and easy is great. My partner and I used to both get it. Leaving the house at 4am and 5am and neither of us being home till after 6:30pm is pretty full on 6 days a week so lite and easy was great.

As for the shakes I think people should check out bulk nutrients and mix a protein shake with full fat milk, similar calories and probably a lot cheaper.

Good thing this thread was bumped, was trying to find it.

Anyways, I've just started going to the gym because I'm a skinny fucker. My question is how do I get enough calories to put on weight.

According to online calculators, I need about 2.7-3k calories to put on mass while going to the gym 3 times a week. What sort of food do you guys eat to get that many?

if you cannot eat the calories have a look at mass gainer shakes. They do work.
simple things like milk with protein shakes makes a difference. I don't like the whole 6 meals a day but it might be beneficial if you need to increase calorie intake.

Add nuts like almonds and cashews to your snacks.

Adding 2 protein shakes per day with milk can add nearly 1000 calories per day alone. Muscle food 101 is pretty decent from bulk nutrients that I have had a few people say is good.

Just be careful with all the saturated fats. That's quite an amount to be consuming not including other meals.

I struggle to eat 1800 calories a day, just gotta keep forcing stuff down my throat I guess (no homo ofc 8-[ ).

Sounds like hell

I'll probably get onto a few milk-drinks, but 2L of straight milk would be hard to drink. Plus milk always seems to trigger breakouts.

When I first started out I would drink 2L of Milk a day. :)

Just be careful with all the saturated fats. That's quite an amount to be consuming not including other meals.

I struggled massively eating enough calories when I first started out (still do but for other reasons now) so yea I started drinking 2L a day not sure exactly how long I did it might have been about a year - it did work really well but towards the end I started feeling pretty average and was putting on too much fat so I stopped.

Plus waking up 3 or 4 times a night to take a piss wasn't nice.

Anyway eating wise, obviously increase portion sizes for your main meals- I'd always try and eat these meals as quickly as I could so I wasn't staring at a big plate a food and I could move onto my 'regular snacks' faster - as I just disliked big meals unless it was ravioli or steak.

So yea every hour or so I was generally eating something - peanut butter, sandwiches, cashews, tuna, slices of cheese, porridge, bananas, eggs. Obviously a few things like ice-cream, all sorts of different pastries, tim tams as well.

Anyone tried the Man Shake ...I'm about to use it...heard you strip weight quick

not tried it but can guarantee it works. however its the same as the VLCD milkshakes from chemist warehouse. like tony ferguson, optislim and optifast.

Cheers I'll check it out.
I think the challenge is when you are older...being over 30 it's harder to shed weight and easier to put on calories not mention being time poor with more commitments

Would anyone recommend McDonalds cheeseburgers for bulking? Decent amount of protein and 250 cals each, not bad.

Just eat bacon & eggs with two protein shakes a day and work the fuck out and you'll see progress

Is starvation mode a thing or does CICO always work?

For the first time, but certainly not the last, I began to believe that Arsenals moods and fortunes somehow reflected my own. - Hornby

I do 40 minutes of 1 minute reps of 100% sprint and jog at 60%.

That's 20 reps in all.

Generally do it every day, but might miss a day or 2 in winter time. :(

Anyone want to join me? I do it for fun.
