I just received an email from the state under 14s coach asking if I wanted to be the sports trainer for the state under 14 team at the national titles?

I was amazed!

I've had no experience apart from self-treating a torn calf muscle two days after the completion of the course.

I only completed a Level 1 Sports Trainer's course in early July. At the end of it I thought I was barely competent and was concerned about declaring publicly that I was qualified.

I'd be far more confident doing the coach's or assistant coach's job for the under 14s!

I cannot believe being offered a job with a lot of responsibility I feel I'm totally inadequate for.:-k

Just read up on what you'll need to do and make sure that whoever you're working with knows you're not overly confident and might need a hand. You'll do fine.

EDIT: Congrats, btw :)

Sounds like a good opportunity to go watch a higher level of youth football. Don't stress out about thinking you're not experienced enough for the role. Some of the states don't even take a trainer or will take 1 between their 2 teams. Practice strapping ankles because that's probably going to be the bulk of your work, and take a bottle of "magic spray". Other than that you'll probably be able to just sit back and enjoy the football.

Do not knock it back mate, experience is experience.

I'm not joking - I'd be absolutely useless.#-o

There is nothing worse than doing a job you know you lack the background to do properly.

It happened twice in my teaching career. it was no laughing matter for students. Thankfully I organised to swap courses with other teachers.

No.

I've knocked it back, but thanks..

Going on those trips would be a nightmare for me. It reminds me of school camps. I always managed to avoid them as a teacher. One is on duty 24/7 for the 10 days or so of the championships.

A cushy number is to be a state TD or NTC coach. They spend a lot of time telling the state coaches what they should do and who they should select- but have none of the responsibility for the players and are paid for their troubles. The state coaching positions are usually voluntary too.

Most coaches and other staff look absolutely exhausted at the end of the national championships - apart from the state TDs and NTC coaches, who have a jolly good time - they have few responsibilities.

One state TD told one state coach I know he couldn't play a player where he wanted her to play - at CB. I'd have told the TD where to go in no uncertain terms.

Through Sports Medicine Association Australia.

My osteopath suggested I do it.

Later when I was appointed as a club TD and in the FFA system, the club informed me it was on.

I must admit, I don't like the idea of being a sports trainer. There seems to be a lot of responsibility with the possibility of being sued. As a coach, or TD, one is preoccupied with other issues.

I only did the Sports Trainer course to try and prevent injuries, as I'm starting to coach older players, up to over 40 years old. Gregory Parker also made me aware of how little I knew when he wrote his training ground articles for the Performance Section.

Thanks for the support, General A. and Thuper, but I'd forgotten about the sports trainer's job since I posted the thread.

The other thing I wanted to learn was CPR in the case of an emergency and being able to save somebody's life. I had to be reassessed for CPR as I would have broken the patient's ribs! And that it is something I feel confident in and I feel one of my strengths, if indeed I have any at all as a Sports Trainer.#-o

I'm hopeless at strapping too.#-o

I'm sure I was the worst and least capable participant in a course of 25 participants.

I've seen quite a lot of rep football live.

I've also seen a fair bit of national championships on video.

Not many of these players make pro level.

Never mind, job done, you succeeded in making your point about the demand for your services to a small forum audience.

That in itself should carry you through to when you next feel the urge to blow your plastic trumpet.

Oh and loving your "jogo bonito" multi on footballanarchy.
