relating to my last post the guy that uploaded that one seems to do it each week. Holland is normally pretty hard to spot even though he has orange boots but there are 3 players that do I think. Also he is 25. This week he was behind the player who scored a header for the opposition, I don't know if he was meant to mark him (I wouldn't think so being that it is their main striker) but he was beaten to the ball. Also he becomes a lot easier to spot after 3:45 because he gets a gash on his head (you do see him walking off with blood going down his face) so he wears a bandage for the rest of the game. On the 4th goal he is at the start of the play and you can see how deep he sits and what we should probably expect for the national team in terms of positioning.

Was that Rogic in acres of space on the edge of the box? Celtic player just floated it in to nobody.

By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

ESPN commentary listed it as a good shot  . Can you give a brief description of how he did when the game is over?

Tommy needs to be a bit more selfish with the ball when he can, plenty of glory hunters in that Celtic side and they won't do him too many favours.

Tom played well and involved himself quite a bit. He still trys to play the fast passing modern Oz style, where he plays one-touch, looking for an instant return. It rarely comes though, because that is not the style of the team. The game is fast, but you will usually see a player attempt to take on an opponent at least as often as trying to beat him with a pass.

Tom is still adjusting to this team and this League. Next season he will adapt and shine.

The shot he took in this game was a weak left foot strike that rolled wide-right of the goal. He probably should have laid it off to the left instead. Only a minute or so later he was in good position and Samaras returned the favour by having a shot instead of giving it to Rogic. They spent a moment nodding and patting each other on the back just after. Bit of selfishness there perhaps.

Flicking through and I find Austria Wien on German sky tonight. Up 3-0 vs Mattersburg afer 20mins. Holland is on and is playing CDM but is also far back in a sweeper role at times. With this score they're clearly having a playing all over the place.

I see more DM's becoming the modern day libero, especialy when three are played at the back and the need for a sweeper now days is almost obsolete.

Without a doubt. Look at United and while Rio often drops off and Vidic marks, Carrick drops back quite frequently into the defensive line. As soon as we get the ball he is the first to bring it out and pass.

The libero is perhaps not dead but just moved further forward. But then again, old liberos like Zelic, Okon, Baresi, Montero, Rijkaard were always capable of sweeping or playing CDM.

I didn't expect to hijack the thread, but that is part to the reason why playing Lucas Neil in DM as this type of player might not be a bad idea. He wouldn't be the last man, can comfortably drop back if needed and he is a smart player capable of passing out to the more advanced 'creative' midfield, but it's all conjecture at this stage and musing.
Sorry for getting the thread off track.

It is good to see an Aussie playing an important role in a league winning side. I know it is not the best league but it is ranked above Scotland in terms of UEFA coefficient and if we had someone playing a full season for Celtic I think most people would want them to be one of the first players on the team sheet. In saying that I am still unsure about Jedinak and Holland as a pair in games where the opposition is putting 10 men behind the ball. They have both had good seasons and it is probably the one position where we have 2 good players competing for what I think may be one spot.

Holland used to be more attacking I think so Holger could tell him to move up the field a little but 2 super deep midfielders just doesn't work against the teams we are playing.

I think his strength is in the back line. He keeps everybody organised, has good positioning and despite his lack of speed he knows faster than anyone else when and where to move.
His problem is failing miserably to make the right challenges and getting beaten too easily which are also problems in midfield.
We have better options for defensive minded mids anyway in Jedi, Milligan and Holland.

@jon90, Agree to an extnent more so on his speed, but he'going to play anyway. So like I said just shooting the breeze realy, a pinch of salt is needed.

@Moofa, I agree, sadly no one presses higher up the field and they'll end up together anyway lol.

I do hope we see more overseas Aussies playing, will be interesting to see what happens with Kruse, hopefully conjestion will allow him to prove himself and start to work his way to a starting 11 spot.

We ALL hope Oar is started at LW this coming match. No matter what the circumstance, even this upcoming 'keep them out' game - He is as good an option as Holger's favourite, Kruse, is on the opposite flank. Suddenly we have a more balanced midfield going forward. We'll have options both flanks with Oar being able to take on players like Kruse can. Oar has the bonus of good set piece delivery too. And like Kruse, Oar should be able to draw a foul or two and slow up play, tempo, against a more domineering minded home side.

The more we can slow the game down and break up play, via fouls for and various stoppages, the more they are interrupted and we in turn have changes to crawl back into it or even control periods of the game and relieve pressure from our goal.

Holger 'tried' to do that, or 'expected that' of him and it didn't happen against Oman. Unfortunately, due to bad instruction from Holger, or bad performing to task by Holland or both, that didn't happen. Some suggest it's not his natural game to go forward - I never saw him when he played with Newcastle but he surely played the 'standard' CM possie there, which = capability going forward aswell as back.

So I have 'some' sympathy for Holger there and the 'young players' comment even, if Holland didn't deliver or perform to what Holger expected, especially in terms of that task of getting a bit more forward and linking with attack and instigating more interplay.

Maybe he still IS capable of doing so - but I think with it being his starting debut in such a pressure/expectation scenario WAS counter productive and nerves, caution/fear of taking a risk, may've lead to his hesitating to be the one to seize the initiative. It didn't help that Jedinak is neither inclined that way and role wise is tasked to sit deeper, either. So he was never going to take up the slack.

Neill has his origins as a RB/RWB and he's reflected these tendencies I think, numerous times with the Socceroos. Usually when we have the ball against a team who's sitting deep - Neill takes the iniative at times to maraud forward to half way, seeking to play a through ball or short, direct ball to feet of somebody around the box. At times he can be caught out doing this, being that far forward that the deep teams counter behind and the DM/S have to drop back to support the other CB or what not.

But anyway, that is part of what we 'missed' with Neill's absence in the Oman scenario. Not only may we have NOT conceded the first goal due to better organisation and hustle - but with the many times we had the ball, attempting to play out from the back and through midfield to much fail, Neill would've been the one to usher the DMs forward as he took the ball up to midway on one of his runs from the back. As that would've shifted the lines and with Oman back, he could've got away with it to some degree.

His distrubtion isn't always the best in such scenarios and can be risky, but it's that kind of seizing of the iniative, INSTEAD of, passing across or back, AGAIN, which changes things up, provides the variable, change in tempo and the additional player in their half, in such scenarios.
