I agree. I was hoping Ruka would start in that position but given that he hasn't been selected, Oar would be great.

I am sick of saying it, but with our LB position a problem, what does Josh Rose have to do to get a callup, short of going to the ME?
The guy's had another great season, he's been playing regularly in a highly successful side, he's battle hardened with the ACL, can attack and defend, passes the ball well under pressure, I am really not sure why he wasn't even considered.
Especially so given that our current options are midfielder Matt McKay and the non-playing Zullo and Davidson.

Especially so given that our current options are midfielder Matt McKay and the non-playing Zullo and Davidson. Hmm it's odd in a way, considering 'too old' Og Monster got the call from Holger. So too did long out Archie and Brosque receive their recalls back into the fold. Even Thwaite, who's entering peak years, is a kind of recall from the cold. I suppose it's timing - The Og came in for the 2011 Asian Cup, early in Holger's reign, due to our option issues at CB. But LB we still had, for better or worse, Carney and McKay slotted in their too, during the tournament. Carney's fall out from the team came wayy too late. And so that saw the LB alternatives only get a serious try later too. Zullo didn't do enough and Davidson just couldn't maintain regular club fotball. McKay has, unfortunately, become the 'comfortable' LB option for now - for better or worse. I have a bad feeling though, with this more defensively orientated game scenario, that even McKay may be bypassed for the 'adaptable' defender that is Jade North, at LB. North has been utilised at LB before and one can't rule out him being utilised there again, especially under Holger. That wouldn't be soo bad tbh - It equals more cover for Neill and The Og and much more defensive capability. More physical capability and in North's case his athleticism and ability to see out a game is good. He will add more presence to defending at set pieces too. And he's an experienced defender who'd be more capable of handling this kind of pressure.

You're probably right but I think that reduces our options in passing and moving out from the back and in fact forcing us to go long, which means more possession turnovers, more defending, etc, etc.

Would prefer either Kruse or Oar to play in behind Cahill against Japan.
Holman has been bunk in his last few games for the Socceroos and hasn't played more than a game this year for Villa.
But he chases real hard.
To be fair whoever plays in that position is mostly going to be chasing the ball all game. I guess whoever plays on the right is similarly going to watch Wilskhire lob crosses in from the half way line as well so maybe it doesn't really matter where any of those attacking midfielders line up.

I agree. Holman would be a good option to have off the bench, especially with his lack of match fitness recently. He would create a few problems when the game has opened up a little, and we've seen that he can score a quality goal or two. I just fear that the goal he scored against Oman will mean Holger pencils him in to the starting XI. Edited by JayEss: 24/5/2013 03:30:36 PM

Great for Oar, not so much for Zullo who we need playing. Who is playing LB in place of him by the way?

Goal will be to 'keep them out' and the odds are that will be waht Holger does. It's been ugly anyway, ugly against Oman. We're aren't going to get too much better, less he starts Bresc again. But he WON'T risk that in this scenario where defensive organisation is the priority, where he will surely utilise another deep screener alongside Jedi and everybody is deep. jmars wrote:Would prefer either Kruse or Oar to play in behind Cahill against Japan.

RUN, RUN, RUN! Holman do your 'so-called' headless chicken routine, do it to the enth!

Alright, should probably have it's own thread but the Young Socceroos are playing against the Netherlands tonight, and I figured here would be a decent place to put it. Seems kick off is around 2:30am Sydney time.

Jedinak and Holland = hardest kints in football
By now, American Samoa must have realised that Australias 22-0 win over Tonga two days earlier was no fluke.

Good game, faded toward the end along with the rest of the team but managed to hold on. Europa league (2nd qualifying round) next season.
