I think a lot of people are hoping for more Harry Kewell type players that were ready to go at a high level at 18, but if we manage to produce more players with Tim Cahill type career trajectories (i.e. Do the hard yards at a lower level and then move to a big club just before peak years) then that should bode well for the national team.

However if we really want to make the jump to becoming a top 10 nation then we need to have more of the Harry Kewell type players, the same way Germany can pick full national team squads from each generation. Given our system I don't think this is realistic for many years so we have to be happy with the Tim Cahill type career path to get out best players.

Interesting you say Kewell type players and then Cahill type career trajectory. I agree by the way.

Anyway this is a really interesting subject but I feel it belongs in it's own thread.

i dont reallt think people just choose it that way. if they are good enough young they get picked up - we've had a tonne of them get this far (brad smith liverpool - luongo tottenham etc). if they are good enough at 18/19 they will probably get a run or loaned out to get some legs. if they are still good enough a couple years later they will have a contract.

Luongo never really got a chance at Tottenham. He hasn't really kicked on from the Asian Cup where he was outstanding.

Mate I was being polite in hope that the let's move this conversation to it's own thread part (my actual point) would not come across as harsh.

By the way I hate international breaks because not good for the OS Aussies thread.

Massive , I take it they got promoted. I said skill . Or you just ignore the higher echelon ?

SPL is Scottlands topflight. Was back when it was regarded as a decent league too.
Also impressive to get runners up in the FA cup with Millwall while captain.

Luongo says he is ready to fight for his place now that Warnock has taken over. Honestly don't know how this bloke keeps getting a job. Granted he did get us promoted in our greatest ever championship season but every other role he has had has been a failure. Ian Holloway mark 2, a great bloke but terrible manager, especially in the Premier League

He was being linked to the QPR job when Ramsey got the sack but i'm not 100% sure. He may be chucking a Redknapp and just drifting off in to the sunset without officially declaring his intentions. Holloway, unlike old 'Arry is still fairly young so he has plenty of opportunities to come back. The only reason i would want him as the manager of my team is purely for the bantz

dam, Ross County drew Celtic in the League cup semis. Any other draw and we would most likely had two Aussies in the final

Meh. Rogic gets the chance to tear a team apart and get in to the final while Irvine gets a chance to prove himself against one of the only good teams in Scotland

He almost destroyed Palace in their promotion year. Dougie Freedman had them absolutely firing and aiming for automatic promotion, then Holloway came and barely scraped through the play offs. He then got sacked very early in to their Premier League season

Where did Freedman go?
He actually didn't get sacked, he resigned of his own choosing, because he believed the new players the club had brought in had ruined his dressing room.

Got bored, looked up Mitch. There was an article two days ago in the German press saying he's training again and a chance for selection against Augsburg on the 21st. Will be interesting to see how he goes, the article did say that Tyton has improved, but he still shipped 8 goals against Bayern Munich and Bayern Leverkusen in the last three games and the most goals overall so far this season. You'd have to think that Langerak is a shoe-in for the spot as soon as he's fit again.
