I'm not sure about your neck of the woods, but we seem to have a lot of competitions for players here.

*One second tier state league club has organised a roster for social teams. They are both male, female and mixed gender teams.

In the mixed gender roster they may have only one state league male player. I was hoping the club would have had a 7v7, or preferably a 5v5 roster. Instead they have 11v11.

*Vikings are running a futsal comp.

*FFA are running a futsal comp.

*There is also an indoor mixed gender roster for 5v5 in an indoor cricket centre. The ball is never out. It bounces off the nets, so play rarely stops.

All these comps are good for players to play casually, without too much coaching and structure. A lot better than running to keep fit in between seasons.=d>

Some players are finding they are touching the ball more in their off season, playing futsal and casual 11v11, than playing for split state league clubs!

Shocking state of affairs!

A couple of coaches have told me that the players who have done a lot of futsal, outdoor SSG comps and outdoor 11 v11 comps are looking very good in pre-season. This even includes social rosters, with mixed ability and mixed gender teams. They've done no 'conditioning' per se, just played lots of football and futsal in the off season.

One player, senior at state league level, told me they felt more confident on the ball from all the futsal they played over spring and summer. The player felt as though he was more confident taking players on, and playing under pressure in confined spaces.

agree with krones......... the more soccer kids and grown up dudes get........the better they get at playing soccer.

practise makes perfect.

give footballers a rest from formal coaching I say.........learn soccer from playing soccer.
