Nice logo, but why green?

The colours of blue, gold and white were chosen for good reasons. Blue and white are the livery colours of the City (shown by the wreath above the shield on the Canberra City Coat of Arms), while blue and gold are the traditional sporting colours of the ACT and were taken from the national blue and gold appearing on the wreath of the Australian Coat of Arms. The choice of colours maintains existing traditions, reflects a link with national history and preserves heraldic tradition and practice.

its probably because the mariners already use those colours.

Nice copy & paste. :d
Why green? Probably because of this:

Blue and gold are Brisbane's official colours too, don't see anyone wanting to change the colours on any of the teams from here though.

Nice crest, Blue/Yellow could just be the away kit and use the home kit/third kit against Mariners. There shouldn't be this whole "another team in the comp has the same colours so they can't have it". Especially when blue/gold has significance to Canberra.

Che?it was strategically placed b/w Melbourne and Sydney.

Somewhere like Townsville would be classed a 'bush capital', if North Qld ever breaks away from the south-east section.

Pignata: A-League potential in Melbourne’s south east

Was going to post the article as normal, but give it a click and read it there, Corner Flag is an awesome website that deserves the traffic.

Also just noted Iridium that you don't have South-East Melbourne and South Melbourne as separate entries in OP, obv they are totally different propositions.

Never seen a green bush tbh. Sounds interesting. Would've thought they'd gone for something more brown like Porto's away kit.

The population argument about the South East of Melbourne exceding one million people is pointless.

That population base is spread over a large area, with poor road and transport links. Meaning that the population is fragmented and in some cases it is quicker to get to the city than it is to move between the suburbs.

There's also no decent sporting stadium of any kind in the area. None in Frankston, Dandenong, Casey or Pakenham. The only stadium that has potential for development is Casey Fields in Cranbourne. But as usual that's an AFL ground and has no connecting train station and is serviced by single lane roads.

So not only would any investors have to pay to start up a new franchise. They would also be needing massive funding from state or local governments to upgrade stadium and transport services too. It's just not financially viable to see an a-league franchise happening outside of Melbourne.

Nup we need more teams in big cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. It's the only way you will receive greater media attention and broadcast (think economies of scale.) Radio stations and newspapers supply content based on the amount of interested readers. We need to strengthen Sydney and Melbourne. Then we can think about expanding to places like Canberra.

For those advocating a South Melbourne backed team - how do you see it being branded in the A-League?

Keep the colours/name etc? Slight variation? Totally different identity?

Obviously the FFA would jump all over any "greek" links, but I think the club would want to not be too restricted by their history anyway - would want to expand in terms of attracting a diverse fanbase.

Regarding the South-East Melbourne possibility - would it be crucial that the club physically play out there?

Or could they play in the city, but have their club base out there?

Tasmania or bust, especially in the wake of the AFL's TV-rights deal.

It would be the perfect rebuke to the AFL's treating its TAS constituents like sh1t; make their loss our gain:idea:

If an AFL team isn't economically viable in Tassie, it would be hard to make the case that an A-League team would be.

Costs are lower, but so is revenue.... The same economic arguments that drove the AFL to putting new teams in Sydney & Gold Coast ahead of Tassie would apply here.

Spot on. We need to stop expanding into regional/less densely populated areas and instead focus on the big cities. Sydney and Melbourne need to both target having 3-4 teams. This is how you would get media saturation, with multiple local games being played in sydney every week.

Have no problem with this as long as bare minimum all state and territories of Australia each have a club side in the FFA cup which it has now achieved this year.

Now expansion into the A-League should focus on the most viable bids in the long term.

if theres a rebrand, ill bring up all the usuals
South Melbourne Cross (former southern cross bid) SMCFC
South Melbourne Athletic (given their home ground is an athletics track) SMAFC
south melbourne united (generic name that always pops up) SMUFC

if south melbourne can permenantly wear the kit they wore against the palm beach sharks going back to their first ever kit, the white kit with red v, along with blue shorts and socks, i think it would look great in the a-league.
