7 legitament derbies would be awesome, all with good colour contrast. I think nth and sth sydney would see rivalries against sydney and west sydney as bigger, at least to start with, as they would be sharing borders with those clubs rather than each other and therefore be in more direct competition with those clubs Nth Sydney is union and beaches. South Sydney is Sydney FC. There is no extra interest there. South West Sydney from Badgerys Creek east to Bankstown and south to Campbelltown is the area we need. 25-75 yr olds may be union now, but there is no indication football wouldn't work in the long run. Especially with the seasons not clashing. My team plays most home matches on Mondays, could this work for that area? I view it the same as a friday night. Go to work, go home, eat, change, football. Plus it doesn't eat into the weekend and their beachtime. Not so great for kids, but it is school holidays, play the bigger games on the weekends. William - strikers are blue and yellow :d Even if there is a market there in the long run - it will be taken by Sydney FC. A SWS team will encroach into not only WSW territory but also SFC territory. SFC will pick the low hanging fruit from the north side as they get pushed from both the west and south west. Northern Sydney is the graveyard on many sporting teams - why bother when there are better, more receptive markets.

1 melbourne based franchise with an afl mentality - ie one from collingwood, carlton, essendon, fitzroy or richmond?
1 sydney based franchise with an nrl history, ie st george region, or one of dem northern beaches snobs (makes for great rivalry against bling fc), although bling fc will pretty much become the eastern suburbs roosters, with the same crowd size regardless of the quality of the team

Victory v City SFC v WSW Mariners v Jets Roar v Strikers SWS v Wollongong Adelaide v Adelaide City Glory v Perth 2 Wellington v Canberra - the capital derby to replace the distance derby;) thats probably a more accurate list, just gotta add north sydney v south sydney though and were complete at the ideal 18 team league

With that in mind surely the more logical markets for phase one include
Sydney Melbourne Auckland Brisbane
With phase two comprising
Canberra Wollongong Townsville Sunshine Coast
Longshots include
Tasmania Geelong Adelaide 2 Christchurch Gold Coast Agree with you there. The next TV deal will require some serious leverage, especially if it's going to attract the interest of a commercial network. So Sydney, Melb, and maybe Brisbane may be the logical choices. And while I'd love a diverse league, I'd much rather a sustainable league. I couldn't care less if the remaining expansion teams were all based in NSW/Canberra, tbh. I'd rather a strong league than take a risk by expanding into a small city which will only attract 5-7k per match. Regardless of where the league goes, it will never have 10 teams in one city like the AFL/NRL did, as those competitions have a long intra-city history.

I understand that, but Glory haven't managed to average 5 figure crowds for the last 10 years. I think for them to turn that around, they themselves need fresh new owners. How can you put another club in that market when that's the case? Glory would die IMO.

That's what it's about tv numbers and marketing potential. This allows the FFA to leverage better deals. Not that everybody feels good because every outpost has a team. I would love a second Brisbane team, but would prefer the clubs to receive more money from a better tv deal. Just wait a second Heart ratings were as bad as Mariners and Newcastle. Come on the game is up , you have just mentioned South Melbourne.

I'd love in the in 2021/22 after the next round of expansion for Ange to be lined up to head the a new Perth team. With some immortal words
"I want to give west australian a team they can be proud of in the a-league. A team that brings true glory to the city of Perth"

We want a stable league with good money coming in. ATM NSW is that place. Putting a somewhere because its not Sydney or Melbourne is not good business. We could look at Broome or Perth where not many would pay to attend, watch on tv or sponsor. Or we can shake the money tree , establish a stronger economic base for the league and invite in half risk clubs 4 years after.

And with WSW, if anything, they need their over-large market, because all they've know thus far is success! Thanks to Poppa and his hard-working, well organised, teams! But if they hit a sustained rough-patch, not unlike what we seem to be seeing with the Mariners now, kind of - then we all know that a portion of those crowds and sky-high memberships will inevitably be shaved off, as the Glory-Hunters flee in droves back into their holes or over to some other fad.
That's when we'll see the true Wanderers and the true level of support. No doubt it will be strong, but as strong as now or as people predict?! That's why their scarcity is an additional motivator of appeal and will help develop the club as a source of appeal, an event, in themselves - even perhaps, if the club is not seeing soo much success. It takes a club who's catchment reaches as wide as SW Sydney, Penrith, NW Sydney etc to sustain that, in a way. Perhaps there are still hundred's of thousands of yearning, untapped masses out Campbelltown way - but chances are a few of them may still travel up to Parra. A SWS still could be viable, but give thought to the very point FFA conveyed, in that of the need of much larger markets and that in itself is sustaining WSW and even Melb City - two teams many argue should've been there from the start and their relatively instant success is a product of those special/unique conditions. But the formula doesn't instantly replicate elsewhere and we've well seen that in practice, via previous expansion etc.. albeit devil in detail, some aspects of the 'ground up' WSW formula should be learned from and applied with EVERY expansion from now on! Be it Canberra, South Coast, Fury, Ipswich or anywhere!
I guess in a way what I'm saying is some of Gallop's comments seem as much 'retrospective' that an outlook into the future. Because the large, untapped, masses in those large, markets of a million or so, have already been tapped via Heart/City and WSW. There a no markets of millions left, including within Sydney itself (Outside WSW and SFC catchments). Again, there's no doubt, that Canberra, South Coast and Fury should all feature large and a trip back out to these regionals, seems the way - if not, SW Brisbane/Ipswich seems more logical - but even then we're talking hundreds of thousands rather than a million or so.

Soo NSW-centric... There has to be a second QLD team in the expansion - whether it Ipswich/Brisbane x2 or Fury Mk II, then a Canberra or South Coast.
For strategic balance, coverage of population, national appeal of the league, as too wider corporate interest etc...I think too many under-estimate these aspects and soo much is missed when people just go down the same old 'population figures' path
FTR You can slice up Sydney every which way and they already do... Where? - in the NSWPL. Granted a SWS team may still have strong merit, but we're talking expansion to 12 here and despite some of the talk from the FFA, surely one of Canberra (Very unlucky to be passed over for the failed Rovers bid), South Coast or Fury will get a good look in. But going by the FFA mantra and success of intra-city rivalries, I hope Ipswich/SW Brisbane gets a good look in, feasibility study, atleast.
