I guess the question is what have agreement does the APL and CH10/P+ have in place for expansion? That would have had to have been part of the negotiations. 20 or so months ago. There must be scope for expansion inside the lifetime of this TV deal.

Doubt it

There's at least 4 licences for Sale for 3 years + now

Hardly an expanding market in anyones view

Yep, given the way that the APL are making decisions like this Sydney GF deal, the optics appear to be to try and steady the ship before anything else. The sad part is that by trying to steady the ship with a decision like that, they may actually sink it faster.

A-League owners had already lost collectively hundreds of millions of dollars prior to COVID.
Little wonder they had to sell a one-third share to a foreign investment firm who will now take one-third of all gross revenues in perpetuity.
Selling the grand final to Sydney was another acti of financial desperation.
Selling more licenses into the league is an option to raise more money...but...Silverlake would take a third of that straight off the top, and then the other 12 clubs have another mouth to feed out of dwindling revenue streams.

We have been hearing about steadying the ship and "sustainability" for literally 14/17 years in this league.
I'm not sure why they bother

Probably not. The clubs want to pump as many license fees in as they can to cover their losses.

A-league for Canberra Facebook page has reactivated. Also, a few days ago ACT sports minister Yvette Berry met with APL about Canberra being in the next round of expansion.

I doubt that there will be any expansion of the A League, contraction is more likely.
All A League clubs are living beyond their means, some more so than others.
To name just a few….. Jets are without an owner, Roar have owners who seem to be unwilling to spend more than the bare minimum, Mariners have always struggled financially, then there’s the Western United fiasco. I’m sure these clubs (or franchises…ugh!) would be happy to join a less costly competition.

clock is ticking for any chance of a Tassie Aleague franchise.
https://www.afl.com.au/news/876737/afl-s-360m-tassie-pledge-hinges-on-new-stadium-deal

AFL team is (as good as) a certainty, the NBL team is going from strength to strength and now the possibility of one , maybe een two Tassie clubs in the NST from next year ..........

Mariners made a $300k profit in the third season of the A-League.

Townsend did indicate the expansion strategy this round was for new markets. The next for derbies. That would mean a second S/E Qld team and maybe a SA or WA team, or even Wollongong.
I don't see that Wollongong is a derby option. They played against St teams in the NST.

I dont suppose they mind that this would affect AFC coefficient for ACL spots??? Does any "club" still worry about continental,l competitions anymore?

The club world cup will have 32 teams in 2025 onwards. I suspect that fundamentally changes acl in pretty big ways

how does it afffect our afc coefficient to have 2 nz teams out of curiosity?

NZ teams can't play in the ACL anyway, so we certainly don't

Possibly our Ocker cousins might not be aware of some of the backstory behind the Auckland bid. It appears to be linked to a shadowy company called "Auckland FC" which was set up 2 years ago by Ivan Vuksich, chair of Auckland City FC, by far the strongest team in our "amateur" National League, and long known to abuse non-profit funding from pokie machines to pay their players under the table (https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/domestic/129829315/the-money-trail-of-new-zealands-top-amateur-football-club). So if this means ACFC turning into an "honest" professional club, then that can only benefit local football.

What's weird is that there were rumours a while back that ACFC were going to join the new Oceania Pro League (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OFC_Professional_League), so who knows what's up with that

Not 100% sure but I seem to remember one of the "cons" of adopting another NZ franchsie a while ago was that it would reduce our ACL co-efficient.. But then again I sure Danny Trashcan and the APL have considered this and are doing everything for "the good of the game" and not just for:
https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/a-leagues-to-add-canberra-auckland-teams-in-50m-expansion-20230314-p5crwp.html
“This is not about investing in the A-League today, it’s about investing in where we’re headed, and we’re really confident the direction we’re headed is going to be one that will drive a lot more enterprise value in those licences,” Townsend said.

If by "benefiting local football" you mean ensuring that NZ has a locked in spot or two in Australian Professional football ecosystem without ANY POSSIBILITY EVER of being relegated, sure I agree.... The rest of your "Ocker cousins" wouldn't seem to care too much about that though.

Danny Townsend on The Global Game has said the following:

APL is committed to expanding the A-Leagues Women's Competition next year.

APL will NOT expand the A-League Mens competition until all the current clubs are financially stable

So does today's news mean that the A-League clubs are all now financially stable?
