Schoolboy's mystery death in fight
Date March 12, 2013 - 12:42PM 269 reading now

Stephanie Gardiner

Playground rumours, squabbles about siblings and plans for a fight after school.

A Sydney inquest has heard those were the events leading up to the death of 15-year-old Aaron Jones, who collapsed during a fight with a schoolmate on the corner of Durham and Kent Streets, Minto, on November 23, 2011.

Counsel assisting the coroner, Senior Sergeant Sasha Harding, told Glebe Coroner's Court on Tuesday there had been some disagreements concerning the younger siblings of the year 10 student and another boy, who cannot be named.

After some rumours about previous fights, the two Sarah Redfern High School students arranged to meet and fight at the Minto intersection near their homes, the inquest heard.

"Available evidence suggested Aaron initiated the physical altercation," Senior Sergeant Harding said.

Some punches were thrown and "this resulted in Aaron losing his balance and falling on the ground and losing consciousness", she said.

He was then taken to Campbelltown Hospital, where he died, but a cause of death has not been established, the inquest heard.

The officer in charge of the investigation, Detective Senior Constable Scott Holyday, said he believed the boys met intending to have a verbal argument.

"On this occasion, the intention of the meeting was to have a verbal altercation ... until the altercation occurred," Detective Holyday said.

He attended the post-mortem examination and could not see any obvious injuries, other than on Aaron's knuckles.

"It didn't appear there were any signs of injury ... resulting from a high level of aggression or violence," he said. "It seems there wasn't any intention of harm by either party."

The inquest heard Aaron had a history of asthma and other family members had heart problems.

A woman who drove past the scene of the fight, Natalie Brizzolara, sobbed as she remembered giving Aaron CPR.

"I saw the boys standing there and then I saw him on the ground and he wasn't OK."

She told police one of the boys had told her he punched Aaron in the head once and he fell down, the inquest heard.

Ms Brizzolara said her impression was that it was all an accident.

"[The boys] were not quite in shock yet, but once I said that he's not OK I think that they were in shock."

Still in tears as she finished giving evidence, Ms Brizzolara whispered "sorry" to Aaron's mother as she walked out of the courtroom.

The inquest continues before deputy state coroner Hugh Dillon.

I still enjoyed watching him slam that little fuck on the ground. That little kid got exactly (if not less) than he deserved.

If Casey did nothing and committed suicide we'd be talking about how unfortunate it was that bullies are not prevented from doing that sort of thing to people.

Assuming his death was the cause of a sudden strong impact to the head, whether it was one punch or the head hitting the ground, just goes to show what a relatively innocuous action can lead to. Some are lucky and get off lightly, like a handcuffed man being thrown to the ground without hands free to break the fall......

What?

Kids fight, it happens and we've all been there. This is just a really sad incident where it all went wrong but if the papers had to report on every schoolboy fight in the country we wouldn't hear any other news at all.

Corporal not capital punishment, Mr Literacy.

IF a bully is being beaten by someone at home and then taking it out on fellow students, corporal punishment is only going to exacerbate the problem, not remedy it.

Expel a bully? For fucks sake kids get helicopter parented enough, they need to be exposed to real life at some stage. We don't get on with everyone, some people act like twats, and a lot of the time people disagree. You'd think education would set kids up to realise these facts when they grow up but instead they're taught that conflict never happens in the real world.

I coached some under 9's and told them at the end of the training session to pick captains, grab a ball and play a game but they didn't know where to start. When I was 9 forming teams and having a kick about at lunch time was instinctive, now they have to be guided through it so conflict doesn't arise and little Jimmy stays safe.

The sad thing is that if someone is bullied and they react, the bully becomes the victim. Fuck bullies, people are C*nts and c*nts deserve to reap what the sew.

What is truly terrible is that usually people don't react and instead it ruins their lives and the bully from a fucked up family that goes on to pro-create more fuck ups and the cycle begins again.

Perhaps, I just hate kids who don't want to be there and waste everyone elses time. It's selfish.

There is no accountability these days Afro. Whatever schools do to curb bullying and distracting students it doesn't get through. I remember having to be in an english class with the gangsters who used to stuff about all the time and waste time thinking they were funny. Shits me to tears that people can get to the latter years of high schools and still behave like this.

Champ, kids don't understand the concept of selfishness. That's why they're kids. They develop a sense of empathy over time. They aren't born with it. You've got to be one of the most out-of-touch members on this forum.

Ben mate, people get into the latter years of high school and get away with this because kids aren't being taught a very important discipline called diplomacy, and it's only learned through practice (and most importantly, play, according to some research apparently).

Ben mate, people get into the latter years of high school and get away with this because kids aren't being taught a very important discipline called diplomacy, and it's only learned through practice (and most importantly, play, according to some research apparently).

I agree completely.

Champ, kids don't understand the concept of selfishness. That's why they're kids. They develop a sense of empathy over time. They aren't born with it. You've got to be one of the most out-of-touch members on this forum.

I'm talking about senior high schoolers and first year uni students not 10 year olds.

You make it sound like I expect year 4 students to be model citizens.

Kids don't truly understand empathy until their brains finish developing in their late teens and early 20's. When they're no longer in school and are out in the real world where adults can no longer protect them from their own stupidity.
