+xThere is some genuine interest in tracking the weather, so I thought I would start a new thread in the Extra Time board. The idea is that I will put up a daily post showing the day-to-day temperatures of the weather in Australia. I use this as my source: http://www.weatherzone.com.au/ This site shows the weather in the capital cities on a daily basis. It follows that I will only be showing those temperatures of the major capital cities. Invariably, this will include temperatures from Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, and other capital cities. I'll start at Tuesday 6 August, 2013. Yes I have a genuine interest in Weather. Always check out all the Aviation Weather such as ARFOR, METAR, TAFs, SIGWX, GPWT etc etc Also look at all the upper level atmospheric conditions, instability, thunderstorm activity, wind shear, inversions, and moisture as well as temperature gradients. I have a bit of a background in it. I use Weatherzone, BSCH and NAIPs

Apparently this storm has been upgraded to a cyclone and there's a tornado warning. Lol I'm going to die.

The "worst weather in 50 years" has so far been a small storm. There is another band coming which will cause a fair bit of hail by the looks of it but so far it has nothing on East Coast Lows

If twitter's anything to go by, doesn't look like anyone has power. Even the hospitals.

Massive storm near Port Augusta took out the largest massive power poles with their high voltage transmissions in multiple locations causing instability in the power network which caused the power generators to shut down to protect themselves. SA gets its powers from in state generation and power an inter-connector with Victoria. When the in state generation shut down the demand on the inter-connector went above its capacity causing it to shut down and no power in SA. However power is now being turned back on in Adelaide, I have power. However some areas of the state might be without power for an extended period.
An event like this could happen in every state but is less likely in larger states due to the larger scale of the networks.
What was seen today was was the first of two bands of weather that will hit SA (and possibly Victoria). There is perhaps even worse weather due tomorrow, with flooding in areas highly likely due to the already saturated ground from wet weather in the last few weeks. Salmon is over playing things but there was talk this is the worst storms to hit SA since the 1960s and perhaps even 1948.

"The worst storm in 50 years" is to an east coast low what an east coast low is to a cyclone. I'll probably eat my own words tomorrow when the worst hits but yolo

A cyclone is a completely different beast to what we get here in SA, nothing like comparable, they should never be mentioned in the same sentence.
However what we had today is called super cell storms which can produce tornado like effects with severe swirling up drafts. There are reports that it was something like this that wiped out the power poles that caused the blackout.
I take the worst storm in 50 years to be taking a state wide view rather than an Adelaide centred view of the state. The worst appears to have hit north of Adelaide today and the weather bureau is suggesting that this might be the case again tomorrow.

Adelaide could be subject to its strongest ever recorded winds in the next few hours and there is highly likely to be much stronger winds in the mid north of SA.
